Chapter 244: All Lies

“This time, I’ll believe in what you say, so could you put your trust in me as well?”

In the moment before she was about to drink the poison, the voice of Igor rang around her head. It came together along with the promise he made in the past, saying that he would protect her no matter what, which he said when they were standing together in front of her mother’s grave.

She didn’t want to experience the anguishing death again. But if she didn’t drink this right at this moment, she would meet an even more gruesome death of dying by burning alive inside the hut. So she tried her best to push away the memory of what he said in her mind, but she couldn’t bring herself to drink it. As if she was under a hypnosis from those words.

“Therefore I decided that I should just look for a way to escape this place instead.”

After deciding that she wanted to live no matter what, she wanted to at least try to do something instead of just sitting there waiting for something to happen. After looking around the room for a while with the candle holder in her hand, she saw that one side of the wall which was made of wood was rotting away. The pieces of wood fell apart easier than she thought due to rot and humidity once she started picking at them with her fingers.

“I was busy ripping apart the wood when it suddenly became really noisy outside, so I turned off the candle light and waited inside. If someone were to come into the room, I thought I could use it as an opportunity to escape while the door is open. I actually didn’t think the person who stepped in would be you. But because you suddenly called out for my name, so…”

Rihannan became suddenly surprised before she could even finish what she was about to say. It was because Igor stepped closer to her, then suddenly knelt down to his knees.

“Igor?”

He pulled out a handkerchief from his pocket, and ripped it in half before wrapping it around Rihannan’s hand that was bleeding from ripping away wooden pieces. She wanted to tell him that it wasn’t a big deal, but seeing as how his expression was not only serious but determined, she couldn’t bring herself to say anything. After he completely wrapped the cloth around her hand, he pulled her hand to his face and wrapped it around his cheek as he dropped his head low.

“Sigh…”

Finally, he let out a deep sigh. Seeing as how his shoulders were faintly shuddering, Rihannan realized just how much emotions were going through his mind and how he was barely holding himself back.

“…Thank you.” Soon, his low baritone voice came out and feintly shook at the end. “To wait for me until I came this time… To not die and live like this…”

His words were soaked deeply with sorrow and remorse. Rihannan realized a moment later what he had meant by that.

“…Did you actually come into the prison back then? After I had died from drinking the poison? To save me?”

Igor bit his lips as he nodded.

“But Leticia definitely said that you gave the order to execute me the very next day…”

Then Rihannan soon realized it. That all of that was just Leticia’s lies.

Leticia had often put Rihannan in bad situations by lying. When Rihannan committed self harm, Leticia would tell her father what she had done to drive their relationship further apart, and she would also often drive out servants that she didn’t like by putting on false claims on them. Even though she had suffered from all those lies she had fabricated, she had fallen for even the very last lie that she had made up.

“…It was all lies.”
