Her eyes were different now. They weren't filled with the youthful glow she once had in the past. For a moment, Nathan's heart skipped a beat as haunted thoughts filled his mind.

His phone rang, breaking the tension that floated between them.

It had pulled him back to reality as it rang with the tone he had set to notify him if it was Mandy's calling.

After hesitating for a few seconds, he waved Jennifer away. "You may leave now," he said, his firm voice not skipping a beat.

"Okay."

Nathan took a sip of water before answering the call.

His fingers were already trembling from his encounter with Sharon. After calming himself for a while, he took a deep breath and called Mandy back.

Mandy had just come out of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She had consulted a famous doctor that relayed to her that there was a high probability for her to deliver a healthy baby and how there wasn't any need for her to be so nervous.

She had been so ecstatic at the news that she just couldn't wait to share it with Nathan.

"Hey, Nathan, are you busy now?" Mandy chirped once he finally called her back.

"I was in a meeting. What's wrong?" He closed his eyes and frowned, trying to keep all his thoughts together from the events that had just transpired in his office.

"I have some good news!" Mandy said, not aware of his bad mood. She thought that the reason why his voice sounded serious was that he had just finished attending a very tiring meeting.

"What is it?"

"I just came from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the director told me that our child will be healthy! I'm so happy." That much was evident in Mandy's walk. From the warm aura that enveloped her to the smile that coated her lips, she was having a blast today.

"That's— that's great." Hearing how happy Mandy was, the corners of his lips also twitched up. However, it was evident that his mind was elsewhere.

It was only then that Mandy realized how 'off' he was being. She purs

would be able to hear what they were discussing. "Are you kidding me?" she whispered. "You'll become a rumor, Mand. People would think you're marrying him just because you got pregnant."

"I don't care about other people's opinions, only Nathan's." There was a warm glow in Mandy's eyes when she remembered how ecstatic he had been when she told him last night.

"Did he say that he would marry you then?"

Mandy shook her head. Nathan did say he would marry her before, but he hadn't brought that up recently.

Cassie frowned. "Well, you can get married in the next month, and in that way, not a lot of people would notice the bump. If you let it grow any bigger, people will start to talk."

Mandy looked away and murmured, "Isn't that too fast?"

"Do your parents know?" Cassie demanded.

Mandy lowered her gaze. "No, if they knew, my mom would beat me up," she said in a low voice. "They're probably going to ask me to abort the baby if they find out."

"Well, what should we do now? I wonder why you didn't take contraceptives," Cassie said sternly like a mother lecturing her child. However, in reality, her tone was coated with sheer worry for her friend.

Understanding what was on her mind, Mandy could only smile. "Don't worry about me," she said, brushing her off. "I trust Nathan. He wouldn't lie to me."
