Chapter 262 - Why did he have to be a hero?

Luo Guangying heard the sound of footsteps heading toward him, and he turned around to look at the person coming toward them.

"What happened?" DX asked with a thunderous expression as he took his crying daughter from Luo Guangying. Upon hearing his daughter's scream, he had immediately passed his son over to Layla Rong before running over in a hurry.

He softly patted his crying daughter's back as he tried to console her.

"It's alright... Daddy's here..." he cooed softly as he hugged her tighter to himself. He had never heard his daughter cry so sadly before, and it broke his heart.

Little Monkey sniffled and pointed in a direction. "She's sad... Daddy, help her..."

His eyes darted to the figure hunching over the gravestone. He then glanced at Luo Guangying and asked in a low voice, "What happened here? Answer. Now!"

Luo Guangying gave him a brief glance before looking back at Xiao Lei's back with a grave expression. He then said with a low voice, "There's a 99% chance that the man who saved your wife and children is buried in there."

DX frowned, and his brows furrowed slightly. "You can't be serious."

"I'm as surprised as you are..." Luo Guangying sighed.

"What happened here?"

They turned to the direction of the voice and saw Han Ye jogging toward them. Kai Xin and her group were right behind him.

Han Ye frowned. "What happened here?"

He knew that this was the grave of the man who saved Kai Xin. But why...

"Ah Jie... Jie... Yunjie... No!" Han Ye gasped upon making the connection, and he turned to Luo Guangying, hoping to be proven wrong. "Please tell me I'm wrong..."

Unfortunately, the shook of the head that Luo Guangying gave him broke his hope.

Han Ye looked at the sight of Xiao Lei hunch over the gravestone, and he felt her pain as well. He knew exactly what it felt to lose a loved one. Han Ye's eyelids twitched slightly when he saw her bloody knuckles, and he quickly went over in order to stop her.

He knelt on one knee behind her before grabbing onto her fists that were still pounding the gravestone. When he caught them, he said softly, "Stop, Xiao Lei... He wouldn't want to see you like this."

She struggled a little, but her struggle did not last long. She felt tired, as if she had just run a marathon, and all she wanted to do was to go to sleep, hoping that when she woke up, everything would just be a dream.

Her body trembled in Han Ye's arms, and she leaned back as she cried loudly. Han Ye slowly lowered her arms, but he did not release her completely. Han Ye looked at her bloodied knuckles, and his heart ached from it.

He held onto her wrists and placed them in front of her belly as he whispered, "I'm here, Wushuang..."

"Why..." She clenched her fists tightly as she looked up at Han Ye. With a pleading gaze, she asked tearfully, "Why?! Why did he have to go and be a hero? I don't want him to be a hero! I just want a husband who is here with me!"

She yelled out of frustration as tears kept rolling down her cheeks. Her body was trembling heavily as she stared at her husband's grave. "Yunjie... Yunjie... What am I supposed to do now? What am I supposed to tell our son?"

Han Ye did not say anything else. He turned her around and hugged her tightly. "Cry... Hit me if you want, but stop hurting yourself..." he whispered softly.

Xiao Lei grabbed onto the back of his shirt as she cried into his chest. Her loud tears slowly turned into quiet sobs as she tried to accept the fact that the husband whom she had been waiting for two years would never come back.

The scene of her trying to suppress her sorrow by crying quietly was even more heartbreaking to watch, especially for those around her. Kai Xin, in particular, felt bad because Xiao Yunjie sacrificed his life and his future with his wife and son to save her and her son, someone who were complete strangers to him.

DX placed an arm around his wife's waist as he tried to console her. He then looked at Xiao Lei and shook his head slowly.

Xiao Lei was gripping the back of Han Ye's shirt so tightly, and he could barely see her face because of Han Ye's body, which was blocking his view. He then looked down at his wife, who had tears falling down her cheeks as well.

With a sigh, DX then said to Luo Guangying, "I'm going to take Kai Xin and the kids back first. Whatever she needs, give it to her."

"I want to stay here..." Kai Xin whispered as she looked up at him. "It's my-"

"Don't even say it!" DX hissed. He massaged his glabella as he said, "I'll deal with this later. Let's get you back to the temple before you fall. We can't do anything here, and we should give her some space to grief."

"But..." Kai Xin wanted to protest.

However, before she could say anything, Luo Guangying said, "I'll be here with them. Go back first."

Everyone agreed. They could not help with anything here, and they doubted that Xiao Lei would want people to stare at her while she was dealing with her loss.

Before he left, DX placed a hand on Luo Guangying's shoulder "Call me if anything happens."

Luo Guangying nodded. After everyone left, he continued to stand there, looking over those two.

Xiao Lei cried until she could cry no more. Her face was flushed as she pushed Han Ye away gently, keeping him an arm's length away. "Home... I... I want to go home..." she murmured in a hoarse voice, as if she was forcing herself to speak.

Han Ye's chest was soaked with her tears, but he paid no attention to it. He merely nodded, and he helped her to stand up, with her hand on his shoulder. "Can you walk?" he asked when they were standing upright. One of his legs felt itchy, like there were a thousand ants climbing on it, but he forced himself to endure the pinprick sensation so that he could support her.

Xiao Lei's eyes were glazed over, as if she weren't really there, but she still nodded upon hearing him. She slowly released her hand on his shoulder.

When Han Ye released his other hand, which was holding onto her arm, she took a few steps forward before her vision turned dark, and she fell forward.

"Careful!" Luo Guangying yelled when he saw Xiao Lei topple forward.
