Chapter 195 - You did a background search on me?

"You did a background search on me?" Head Manager Han asked in an irritated tone as he glared at Han Ye. "Who gave you permission to do that?"

Han Ye shrugged. "Well, I can't find anything else by myself... Did you delete all the information about yourself?"

Head Manager Han ignored his question and reiterated his question, "Who gave you the permission?"

Han Ye was about to ramble about something else, but he had a feeling that Head Manager Han would throw him out of the suite immediately if he were to try to divert the man's situation. Especially the sharp, piercing look the man was giving him. "President Du gave me access to the files of everyone in Shenlong Family."

Han Ye felt that President Du was the only person he could throw under the bus and still survive.

"That man..." Head Manager Han frowned. "I have to talk to him about giving access of such confidential matter to someone outside of the Du Family. He should have known better."

"Head Manager... No... Big..." Han Ye stopped himself. He felt weird... After all, he had only just found out that he had an older brother, and so, he could not bring himself to call Head Manager Han as Big Brother just yet. "Han Xuan, I'm really sorry about your son's death."

When he saw the record about the baby, Han Ye was shocked. He felt that Head Manager Han had suffered too much in his life. Abandoned by his mother... Had an abusive father... Abandoned again by his family... Lost his newborn son...

Han Ye thought that his life was hard, but it was nothing compared to the life of this brother that he knew nothing about. When Han Ye was reading about Head Manager Han's life with the Shenlong Family, he had winced whenever he saw what Head Manager Han went through.

Broken limbs, stabbed, burnt, shot at...

Head Manager Han stared at Han Ye for a few seconds before saying, "There's nothing to be sorry about. He died a natural death."

"Still..."

"I don't want to talk about him. If there's nothing else-" Head Manager Han said with a grave expression.

He was about to stand up when Han Ye interrupted him, "Han Xuan, what was I like as a kid?"

When Head Manager Han looked at him as if he had lost a few IQ points, Han Ye quickly added, "I don't have many memories from the time when we were staying together. I mean, I didn't even know that I had an older brother. What was I like? What were we like? Are we close?"

Head Manager Han sat back down and said, "You? A coward, crybaby, and a chronic bedwetter."

Han Ye could feel the imaginary knives thrown by Head Manager Han on his chest, and his face burned with embarrassment when he heard that he was a bedwetter. He felt that that might be the real reason why he had forgotten everything about his life before he turned five. "That's... blunt."

"You were always crying, and you were afraid of a lot of things. On a bad night, you were even afraid of your own shadows, and you kept wetting your bed even though I told you to wake me up so that I can take you to the toilet."

"I don't remember all those..."

Head Manager Han sighed softly. "There's no point in remembering them. Those weren't fond memories for anyone."

Han Ye looked at Head Manager Han before asking sheepishly, "How about our father?"

Head Manager Han was about to reach for another can of beer when his hand stopped in mid-air. After a few seconds, he grabbed the beer, pulled the tab open, and took a gulp. He then looked at Han Ye and said, "He's a monster."

"I don't remember much about him either."

"Good for you. Men like him don't deserve a spot in our minds." Head Manager Han had often wished that he could forget about the man who caused him so much pain... yet he could not. Unfortunately, he was too old at that time.

Even when his master offered to wipe his memories clean using the Shenlong Family hypnosis technique, which they usually used on their enemies, Head Manager Han refused. He was afraid that he might forget everything about his stepmother and his younger brother.

Han Ye glanced at Head Manager Han for a while before asking, "Then what about you, Han Xuan? What were you like?"

"I was a boy. There was nothing special about me."

Han Ye could tell that Head Manager Han did not really want to talk about himself, so he asked another question. "Were we... close?"

Head Manager Han glanced at him briefly and sighed. "You clung onto me like a koala bear the whole time, so I would say yes."

"Han Xuan... Did you kill our father?"

Seeing that Head Manager Han did not say anything, Han Ye added while looking down at his can of beer, "I couldn't find anything about you, but I found an article about a murder that happened at our old home... It happened during the year we moved away... and the victim's name matched our father's name."

Head Manager Han looked at Han Ye coldly. His gaze was so scary that Han Ye shivered a little, especially when Head Manager Han asked in an equally chilling voice, "So what if I killed him?"

Han Ye gulped and his can of beer creaked a little from his nervousness. "Did you kill him to protect me?"

"No."

"Han Xuan... I've been thinking a lot about you lately, and it made me recall something. Before my mother passed away, she was so heavily medicated that a lot of time, she was talking nonsense... But in her last days, she always looked at me and apologized..."

"So?" Head Manager Han took a gulp from his beer while appearing indifferent from Han Ye's words.

"She always said, 'Xiao Xuan, I'm sorry...". Over and over again. I didn't think much about it back then. I thought she was just talking nonsense as per usual. But... Xiao Xuan... She's talking about you, right?"

Head Manager Han replied in an indifferent tone, "Who knows..."

He remained expressionless, as if he felt nothing at all for the woman whom he once called mother.

The only thing that betrayed his perfectly expressionless face was the fact that there was a small dent on the can of beer he was holding... the only thing that showed to Han Ye that he was affected by it.

And so, Han Ye continued, "When I was twelve, our living condition improved slightly... and we went to this orphanage. I can't really remember which city it was, only that it was three hours away from us. Mum said that we were going to find someone there... When we left, she seemed so troubled and upset that she barely spoke a word to me. And I never asked either... She left you at an orphanage, didn't she?"

Head Manager Han had a slightly surprised expression on his face, which was quickly replaced by his usual emotionless and stoic one. His master had never told him anything about it, and he knew that his master would keep track of things like this.

"I think she went back to get you..." Han Ye continued.

Head Manager Han waved a hand nonchalantly. "It doesn't matter now..."

"I don't know what Mum was thinking when she left you, but I'm sure at that time, she felt that it was the best course of action... And I can tell that she had never stopped blaming herself for making that decision."

"Why are you telling me this?"

"I don't want you to think that you're alone in this world..."

"I'm not a sentimental person. This kind of thing won't bother me."

Instead of being offended, Han Ye gave his older brother a kind smile as he said, "Sentimental or not, I still just want you to know... I'm really glad to have found you."
