Chapter 194 - Care for a drink?

Back to the present, when he got back to Hotel W, Head Manager Han was surprised to see Han Ye pacing at the hotel lobby, looking as if he was troubled by something. Head Manager Han did not really want to talk to him. However, just as he was about to sneak away, Han Ye saw him and waved at him.

Han Ye then jogged over to Head Manager Han, and as he held up a six-pack beer, he asked, "Care for a drink?"

"I have to work, Mr. Han," Head Manager Han said and turned to leave. However, Han Ye immediately reached out to grab his arm.

When Head Manager Han finally looked at Han Ye again, the latter said with a sad tone, "I'm heartbroken."

With a brow raised, the older Han brother asked, "And that bothers me how?"

"You're my older brother."

"I'm not your older brother," Head Manager Han denied.

"Deny it all you want, but," Han Ye glanced at the six-pack in his hand and sighed before saying, "if you don't drink with me, I'm going to drink all six-pack by myself and go for a drive later."

"You won't," Head Manager Han scoffed as he walked away.

Han Ye followed behind him while asking curiously, "Why not?"

"Your wife died in the hands of a drunk driver."

Han Ye narrowed his eyes at Head Manager Han for a few seconds before sighing. "Fine... I just wanted to talk a little, but since you're not interested..."

He then turned around and walked away, but after taking a few steps, he heard Head Manager Han sighed loudly before he said, "You have an hour."

.....

They went to Head Manager Han's suite, and when he walked in, Han Ye was surprised at how devoid of life his suite was. Everything was stripped down to the bare essentials, and there was nothing that reflected his status as the head manager of Hotel W. The most colorful part in the entire suite was the table, where files of various colors with various labels sticking out of them were placed.

Given how Han Ye sometimes did a quick spot-check on the accounts of hotels under Du Corporation, he knew exactly how much President Du paid Head Manager Han for his service.

"Nice place," Han Ye remarked as he walked to the couch area and sat down.

"Feel free to make yourself at home," Head Manager Han said in a slightly annoyed tone.

Han Ye smiled and threw a can of beer to Head Manager Han before he said, "I will. After all, we are brothers."

"Mr. Han..." Head Manager Han sighed as he sat down.

Piak!

Piak!

Both of them crossed their legs and took a huge gulp of beer from their respective cans before Head Manager Han asked, "Why did you come today? Didn't Madam President Du just give birth? Shouldn't you go and celebrate with them?"

Han Ye shrugged. "The baby was born earlier than expected and was put under observation for now, but he's relatively healthy. That's all I need to know."

Head Manager Han took another mouthful of beer as he glanced at Han Ye from the corner of his eye. "What happened? You said you were heartbroken."

Han Ye sighed loudly before downing the entire can of beer and opening another one.  As he looked at the can of beer in his hand, he started to tell Head Manager Han what happened today.

"Why did you break up with that Angela girl? I don't know much about love, but I do know that you're supposed to stand by your girlfriend," Head Manager Han asked in an indifferent tone.

"Well, she didn't do the right thing..."

"The way I see it, you are the one who didn't do the right thing."

Han Ye frowned. "What do you mean? I always do the right thing."

"You're supposed to stick by your girlfriend, even if she's a bitch. She probably did whatever she did because she felt insecure. And she felt insecure because you have never given her the security she needed."

"I did!" Han Ye protested. "I did everything I could to convince her!"

Head Manager Han scoffed, "All the while keeping your eyes on another woman, defending another woman, spending more time with another woman than your girlfriend. That's what you called 'convince her'?"

Han Ye "I didn't look at Xiao Lei when I'm with Angela!"

"No, I didn't say you looked at Xiao Lei. You defended Xiao Lei and you spent time with her because she's your neighbor and secretary. But you looked at Wu Yuexue."

"What?" Han Ye was confused. How could he look at his late wife?

Head Manager Han sighed and placed his empty can of beer down. He then looked at Han Ye with a serious expression and said, "From the very beginning, you've never looked at this Angela for who she was. You were looking at Wu Yuexue the whole time. Perhaps Angela was wrong to hide her true behavior and characteristics when she was with you, but you were not any better. You hid from her the fact that you've never looked at her as anything but a replacement for your late wife. You knew that she was acting the whole time, but you were so glad to have a piece of Wu Yuexue back by your side that you were willing to hurt another woman for it."

Han Ye frowned. Of course he knew that he was an a*shole, but hearing someone else pointing it out to him right in his face annoyed him more than he thought.

Head Manager Han continued, "I know that Wu Yuexue's death had affected you greatly, but it's about time for you to get your head out of your a*s. Either go and be a monk, or move on with another woman."

"Hey! It's not as easy as you think!"

Head Manager Han rolled his eyes subtly. "Well, you said that, yet you already have your eyes on this Xiao Lei. And from what I know of her based on our limited interaction as well as from your words, she was completely different from your late wife, whether it was personality, temper, or physical attributes."

"I don't have any feelings for her...?" Han Ye said, albeit he could not muster enough strength to stress on the point. Sure, he felt that Xiao Lei was cute sometimes, and he liked to watch her scarf down everything as well as how she glared at him whenever he annoyed her, but... Did he have feelings for her?

Head Manager Han leaned back against the couch and folded his arms as he sneered. "Try and convince yourself that. If you really don't have any feelings for her, you wouldn't have split up with Angela for such a small matter. If you're trying to do the right thing, you'd have just scolded Angela and let it sit for a few days. But no. You chose to break up. And that's because a small part of you felt something for Xiao Lei, even if you haven't realized it yourself yet. Ask yourself this, who is the first person you think about when you wake up?"

"Xiao..." Han Ye frowned and stopped himself. Even if Head Manager Han was right, the only reason why he had often thought about Xiao Lei upon waking up was that she was his secretary and that he was training her to be on alert, and so, despite knowing his own schedule by heart, he would still send her messages asking for his schedule every morning.

He gave Head Manager Han's words some thought, and he finally accepted the fact that he MIGHT have been spending an unnatural amount of time looking at and thinking about Xiao Lei, who was only his friend and secretary. "It's only to make sure that she's safe and out of trouble... right?" Han Ye thought as he downed his can of beer.

He then opened another can of beer and glared at Head Manager Han. "You know, I think I prefer the quiet Head Manager Han with few words."

Head Manager Han pointed at the door with his chin. "I'm not stopping you from leaving..."

"No. I want to talk more with you. Don't try to keep me out by making me angry. I have a lot of questions for you."

"There's nothing much for us to talk about."

"I want to know more about you."

"Why?"

"Because you're the only family I have left..."

Head Manager Han stared at him for a long time before sighing loudly. A flashback of Han Ye's mother appeared in his mind. It was when they first met, and the woman tried her best to make Head Manager Han smile... And she did so by asking incessant questions.

"Guess he's really that woman's son..." Head Manager Han thought wryly, yet his facial expression remained the same--expressionless.

He uncrossed and crossed his legs again before asking, "What do you want to know?"

"I want to know if you've been well all these years... and if you're still sad about your son's death..."
