Chapter 381 - Perhaps

Gao Chaoxiang Listened carefully to Lu Fang's story. It was a story about a boy who had lost his father and mother at a young age. He was told many good qualities about the boy until he grew up to be a fine young man. After many years, the boy found out that his father was alive.

The father had no memory about his family and that of his son. Fate had wronged him in many ways, making him unrecognized his past, including himself.

Towards the end of the story, Lu Fang asked, "Mr. Kang, what do you think is the best way to reunite the father and son?"

Gao Rou's father pondered on the question for minutes, but soon said, "I guess, it would be best to give the truth slowly… if remembering is not possible - I mean, I for one. If I had a son whom I don't remember, I would hate myself. I would pity myself."

"I see, well… Thank you for your time, Mr. Kang. Your suggestion is very helpful." He shook his hand before excusing himself and went back to sit with his wife.

When he shared Gao Chaoxiang's thoughts with Andrea, she could not help but agree. She had a strange reaction when she lost part of her memories. After learning she had a husband and family that she could not remember, the pressure of recognizing made her want to escape at some point.

She hugged her husband saying, "We should let their connection do the remembering, babe. Just like how I remembered."

Following their arrival in Beijing, they all went home to the old mansion that day, including Gao Chaoxiang. Andrea figured it was best to stay with her in-laws while Lu Fang had a mission for his brother.

After getting his family settled in his old home, he and Hanxi went to Gao Rou's home, hoping they could have a good talk.

Evening came and Lu Wei had the household prepare a good feast in celebration for Gao Chaoxiang's return. Although he was not told the preparation was for him, Gao Chaoxiang somehow sensed that the abundant food was remarkable for a normal dinner.

It crossed his mind that they were still welcoming him, but then again, Lu Fang and his family had just arrived as well.  He said to himself, 'Perhaps the celebration is for them.'

Gao Chaoxiang was still overwhelmed by how Lu Wei received him in his home. To think he was going to tell on him on how he may have orchestrated the death of Gao Rou's father.

In the middle of enjoying their meals, Lu Fang and Hanxi appeared before them, bringing along Gao Rou and Deana.

Christina nearly cried at the sight of Gao Rou. She quickly held herself back, knowing they had agreed not to make it too obvious for Gao Chaoxiang. Still, she got up and hugged Gao Rou, whispering to his ears, "Thank you. Thank you for coming here."

Gao Rou looked at Lu Wei and Lu Jie, he gave them a nod before finding the man he was here for; his father. He took saw the seats next to him were empty. Thus, he proceeded to sit beside him while Deana followed.

Gao Chaoxiang looked down to avoid Gao Rou's gaze. He knew who he is, and he was ashamed of what he had done. He was expecting to be thrown out of the house or to be yelled at, but instead, Gao Rou sat next to him.

"Good evening, Mr. Kang," said Gao Rou. "I'm glad that the matter between us is already settled."

He turned to Gao Rou, surprised at how calm he was. His face paled, knowing he had wronged him. " I am so sorry  -"

"No need to be sorry. This was Rou Yanlin's fault," said Gao Rou before giving a small smile. Turning to everyone in the table, he said, "Thank you for dinner. This - this may be, the best dinner -  I  - I have ever had in years."

Gao Rou stopped himself from getting emotional, saying, "Sorry. I have colds."

"I have colds too," said Christina, justifying her near crying actions.

"And me… I have colds too," said Deana who leaned at Gao Rou for a hug.

It did not take long for everyone to turn their dinner into less dramatic, the ladies giggling at their reasons for sniffing.

Gao Chaoxiang did not understand how fortunate he was to be found out by Lu Fang. It would seem to him that he found himself a good family. He was already contemplating to serve them, knowing their generosity.

In any case, he had nowhere else to go. Coming to their home was the best thing that happened to him so far.

In the days that followed, Gao Rou and Deana lived in the old mansion. It was only when Gao Rou had been more accepting of everything when Lu Fang brought his family back to their home.

Since Gao Chaoxiang was not comfortable being a freeloader, Gao Rou suggested he can re-learn how to drive and be his personal driver.

He was again taken aback at being trusted to drive Gao Rou. It took him a few days to get used to an automatic transmission car and soon; he was able to drive Gao Rou in short distances without being nervous. One time he was driving to Lu-Wei Enterprises, he said, "I think I may have been a driver before."

Gao Rou smiled and said, "Perhaps."

Even if he was a personal driver, Gao Chaoxiang found it strange that Gao Rou brought him along even inside his office. Sometimes, Hanxi would invite him to the security room or he would simply stay at the old mansion.

When it was time for Lu Fang to go on a business trip to France, he went to Gao Rou's office. He had a gift for Gao Rou and was hoping it would be useful for him.

When he came inside, he greeted  Gao Chaoxiang and sat in front of Gao Rou's desk. He handed him a big brown envelop.

Gao Rou slowly opened the content and saw it was the deed to their old house. He looked back at Lu Fang, who gave him an explanation, "I bought it from the new owners. It needs refurbishing, but I figured you know best how to bring it back to its old look. Maybe - maybe that will help."

Gao Rou recalled how his mother had lost their home to the bank. He never thought of buying it back. To him, it was a memory of his lost father.

He smiled and looked at his brother, saying, "Thank you, bro."

"You are welcome. Take care of the company. I will leave for France tomorrow. Hanxi will be coming with me so, please check on my family too," requested Lu Fang.

"Of course," Gao Rou agreed.

The man smiled at Gao Chaoxiang again before stepping out of the office.

Just as he was walking back to his office, Gao Chaoxiang came running after him. He asked, "Mr. Lu, the brother - the brother you told me about. Who was he?"

Since Lu Fang was not sure if it was the right time, he said, "You will know him soon. I have many brothers."

"Is it Gao Rou?" Gao Chaoxiang asked.

He turned to Gao Rou's father and said, "Perhaps."
