Chapter 39 - Head on the Chopping Block

Walking down the narrow alleyways, Yu Huiyin and Hui Liqiang were on alert. The usual playfulness that was evident on her face had been replaced with a grim expression.

Usually, she would walk these paths with no problems, but now she was suddenly a target of others. She knew that while some of the inhabitants of the slums would never harm her, there were some who only cared about profits.

Fortunately, they did not encounter them. However, what they did encounter was one of the men that Yu Huiyin used to call 'Uncle'.

He was a middle-aged man who had been living in the slums for years. The police knew him as he was a part of a gang. However, because of his bad luck, he had never managed to get to the inner circle of the gang, only belonging to the outer circles.

When he saw Yu Huiyin, he greeted her happily like always. He had a wife and son, and once, when his son was very sick, it was Yu Huiyin who had looked after him so that they could keep their jobs.

But when he saw the figure behind Yu Huiyin, his face paled, and he bowed deeply. "This lowly one greets Mister Hui."

Hui Liqiang and Yu Huiyin were both taken by surprise by his words, and Yu Huiyin especially. This middle-aged man belonged to a gang, but she did not know precisely what he did. Even so, the only people he showed such great respect to were other people higher up in the hierarchy of the gang. Could it be Hui Liqiang belonged to a gang as well?

Or perhaps he did once upon a time, and now that he wanted to change his livelihood to become a law-abiding citizen, so Xie Jingyu had taken him in and made him a bodyguard?

But it was also a possibility that Xie Jingyu had something to do with the gangs. Yu Huiyin narrowed her eyes as she looked at Hui Liqiang, who was panicking slightly internally, and cold sweat was beading on his forehead and drenching his back.

"Uncle, you know Mister Hui?" Yu Huiyin asked gently as she looked at the middle-aged man with curiosity.

"Of course I know him," the man answered fast, but then he was silent for some time. "Even though it is you, little Yin, I cannot tell you about anything that might cause you problems later. But Mister Hui is a very respectable and loyal figure. He is definitely a good man."

Yu Huiyin then realized that he had completely misunderstood the situation, and she began laughing.

"He is the bodyguard my boyfriend sent to look after me," she said. She was not overly cautious as she did not know how much trouble her words could cause her, but the middle-aged man instantly understood.

Only a few people had the authority to order Hui Liqiang around, and only one would be able to tell him to be a bodyguard.

Hui Liqiang was one of the best fighters in the entire country, not to mention, a brilliant shooter.

He was, without a doubt, the best choice as a bodyguard, but to be sent to guard a small girl like her, it was clear that her value was extremely high in the eyes of the boss.

The middle-aged man suddenly turned rather frightened. Who would have thought that Yu Huiyin would have such connections! Why was she still living in the slums when she knew their boss? And he had even sent someone to protect her like this!

But the one who was the most uncomfortable was Hui Liqiang. He was so worried that he had somehow made Yu Huiyin wary of his identity. If she realized their boss's true identity and took her family and ran away, how would he possibly deal with her? Not to mention him, who had let the cat out of the bag?

Yu Huiyin noticed the nervousness of Hui Liqiang, but she also knew that she would get no answers even if she asked something. She had spent days at the hospital trying to get some knowledge from Hui Liqiang about Xie Jingyu, but he had said nothing.

Now that he was alarmed, he would say even less. So she pretended to be stupid and not understand what was going on.

"Uncle, I am in a hurry. I have to pick up my motorcycle, so I will see you later and talk with you when I have more time."

Everyone present felt a sense of relief when they heard Yu Huiyin say this; it was as if a queen had given them amnesty.

Hui Liqiang quickly accepted the chance to change the topic and hurried to lead Yu Huiyin further into the slums.

The middle-aged uncle was feeling fearful, while Hui Liqiang was straight out worried. What if Yu Huiyin said something to Xie Jingyu about this, then it was likely that his head would be on the chopping block.

Yu Huiyin was aware of this, so she pretended to know nothing out of the ordinary, but she told herself that when she had the time, she had to read up on Xie Jingyu's background. She would even ask her friends, when racing the following day, if they knew what background he had.

There were a few people in the upper circles who enjoyed racing too, and through racing against one another numerous times, their relationship could, most of the time, be considered friendly.

However, there was one of the young wealthy scions that Yu Huiyin had a feud with. He was not a very good loser, and whenever she beat him in a racing match, he would engage in a fight with her afterward; which often resulted in him being beaten down by her.
