Chapter 232: Terrible Twist of Fate

“What else is there for you to hate her for?”

“She directed all of her hatred and wrath towards me. And that woman in the end ran away from all the criticism that could head towards her. She wanted to be known as a nice person in the end no matter what she did.”

Ironically, the Queen Mother did like Rihannan as much as she said she did. That was the reason why she recommended not to depose of her once the fact that she cannot bear any children became known, and instead take in a surrogate mother to have the child. It was a very unexpected recommendation on how the Queen Mother usually takes care of things. It would have been more fitting for her to kick out Rihannan who had been a thorn in her path and instate another woman in her place instead.

Even though the Queen Mother instigated conflict between them, in contradiction to her actions, she wished for Rihannan to give birth to a child and raise a harmonious family together. She knew that the only person who treats her like any other equal human among all the people that hated her completely in the palace was Rihannan, and even though she happy for that, the queen mother still made use of her attitude.

That was the problem. If she had hated Rihannan in the beginning and wasn’t afraid of being hated by Rihannan back, the outcome of the story may have been different.

“Basil, I have something I need to confess to you.”

“…”

Basil flinched for a moment, having a strange thought in his mind, and slid himself away from Igor slightly. Igor was barely able to stop himself from wanting to beat up Basil right away for having such stupid thoughts.

“I once overheard a conversation between mother and Marquis Rozan.”

“What kind of conversation was it?”

“It was a conversation about how she could lose all her political power if I were to suddenly die, so they were hoping for me to have a son to carry on my lineage before that could happen.”

Basil’s mouth became agape. It was a truly astonishing expression.

“When did that conversation take place?”

“It was when I was around eight years old… It was after I was heavily injured. The Queen Mother realized how fragile her grip on power after seeing me like that.”

“Is that why you hated the Queen Mother that much since then?”

“Basil, if it was you, which would you be more shocked by, being betrayed by your wife, or by someone that you had no relation with?”

Basil shivered, looking like he didn’t want to even imagine such a situation.

“…Of course I would be more shocked by being betrayed by my wife. I wouldn’t be able to handle it at all.”

“Right, normal people would be like that.”

After chasing Rihannan all the way to the Sallerno port and ending up not being able to catch her before she left and coming back to the palace, he noticed that the letter that Rihannan had sent to Queen Mother had arrived by the time he came to the palace. The letter was filled with words of kindness and consideration. No one could ever think of this as something that someone that went through the experience of painful death could ever write in a letter.

Rihannan hates and loathes herself. However, she still treasures and loves the Queen Mother who was the one who vicious to her. To the point where she would personally write a letter directly to her when she was leaving everything behind and going back to Chrichton.

In the terrible life she was living before returning to Chrichton, the only memories that were left as happy ones in her mind were the ones she spent with her mother. How would she change if she had known that her mother, who she loved that much, had committed those foul crimes?

At that moment, Igor knew that even if his identity of remembering the past had been realized by Rihannan, he will never reveal the truth about what mother did in the past to her.

“I do not wish for Rihannan to feel the same way that I did. There is no need to intentionally make her hate more people.”

Basil made a confused expression.

“What do you mean by that?”
