Chapter 229: Call Me Sister

“It’s all right, so come over here and have some.”

Hearing that, the children immediately all ran towards the food. Looking at them shove any food into their mouths in a hurry with their dirty hands made Rihannan feel a bit uncomfortable.

This place was made up of people who live their lives by logging or farming using slash-and-burn agriculture style. She knew that the lives of people living around here weren’t quite ample as much as her life was, but she didn’t know that it was this bad. If those children are this hungry, then their parents and adults must be even hungrier than them.

She wasn’t able to properly take a look at how the lives of peasants were going because of her business she had to take care of. And therefore, Rihannan was embarrassed when she realized just how much she was oblivious. If she had grown up from a young age with her parents showering endless love and resources to her all her life, then she may not have even understood the hardships that these people were going through.

“Take your time eating. There’s plenty for all of you to eat.”

Hearing her, one of the children smiled happily. She looked to be a young girl of around ten years old. Rihannan stretched out her hand and dusted off the dirt that was on her cheek. The child seemed to be even happier at her generous gesture, and diligently shoved even more food into her mouth.

“But what were you all doing here?”

“We were playing.”

“What were you all playing?”

“We were catching rabbits.”

One of the boys mumbled a reply with his mouth filled with food. Rihannan burst out in laughter. The memory of seeing her cousins that were similar to Dima playing around and catching rabbits came into her mind.

“So did you catch any rabbits?”

The child shook his head with a sullen expression right away.

“No. They were so fast that it was hard to catch them.”

“Were you trying to catch them using your hands? Then of course you wouldn’t be able to catch them.”

“Then how do you catch them?”

“Try using baskets.”

Seeing a high-ranking noblewoman give them tips about how to catch rabbits, the children gawked at Rihannan with awe and confusion.

“With baskets? How?”

“Put up a basket upside down while it’s propped up with a stick on the path where rabbits often go by. Then you put some feed inside under the basket. If you tie a string on the stick and wait in the bush nearby for a rabbit to come by, you’ll be able to capture it by just pulling on the string once the rabbit goes under the basket.”

“Aha, we did capture some sparrows that way. Does that work on rabbits as well?”

“Of course. My cousins always used to catch rabbits that way as well.”

“Then we’ll try the way you taught us next time, sister!”

A girl that was next to the boy elbowed him on his hip.

“Hey, don’t call her a sister. You’re being rude.”

“Then what do I call her?”

“You have to call her madam.”

“But calling her madam is a bit weird! You would usually call grumpy old women ‘madam’.”

The children were in massive confusion over what title to call Rihannan with. Rihannan was laughing genuinely out loud, which she hadn’t had done in a very long time.

“Call me whatever you like. Whether it’s sister or madam. But personally, I prefer to be called sister.”
