Chapter 221: Mercenary

The beast casting off all semblance of disguise was gone. His face looked ready to pounce on her, his sharp teeth and claws ready to tear her apart in two. Leticia sat frozen, unable to speak a word. Her lips trembled.

Igor pulled out a knife slung on his hips, eyes glaring at her. “If you don’t tell the truth after I’ve cut off all your fingers, I’ll dig out your eyes and limbs one by one. That useless tongue of yours will be the last to go.”

As Leticia sat there frozen not being able to say anything, Igor pulled out a knife that was slung on his hips.

“If you do not tell the truth even after I cut off all your fingers, then I shall dig out your eyes and cut off your limbs. I’ll cut off that useless tongue of yours last as well.”

With one swift move, he grabbed Leticia’s hand and held it down on the floor. Before the blade shining from the torchlight stabbed down onto her finger, Leticia screamed loudly in fear.

“I-It’s someone that Count Clobis had sent. That was the man who helped me!”

“Count Clobis?”

Leticia hurriedly nodded.

“After saving me from the carriage, he brought me somewhere else.”

“And where is that?”

“I don’t know. It was a place completely filled with giant trees… Sob…”

While holding back her sobs, Leticia continued speaking.

“He brought me to that place, then said he will help me enact revenge on the queen. He had prepared everything for me to sneak inside the palace as well. So please, don’t do this to me and ask the Count instead. I’m sure he knows everything.”

In truth, Leticia knew nothing about the man. She didn’t know his face nor his name.

“I honestly don’t know anything else that that. I’m telling the truth. Sob…”

Leticia sobbed and wept. She was shivering in fear thinking that her answer may have been insufficient and that he may stab her finger this time. Thankfully, not long after Igor let go of her hand. Leticia immediately scurried to the corner of the room and balled up her body.

“… You best be saying the truth. If we found out that you’re telling lies, then you will see with your own eyes exactly what I had said I will do.”

Letticia nodded her head again. After Igor left the prison, Leticia crumpled up as if collapsing right there and there. She gasped loudly, finally being able to breathe since she had been holding it this whole time.

She was late in realizing that she should never lay her hands on him.

As Igor stepped out of the prison, Basil went up to him immediately.

“Your majesty, how did the talk…”

As Basil saw Igor’s expression, Basil’s mouth froze in shock. He was seeing Igor make an expression that he had never before seen in his life. A completely emotionless face with his eyes darkened to the point of pitch black. It felt like Basil was looking at someone else’s face. Basil soon realized that he had see this expression from someone else in the past.

People who survived a horrendous war would come back with this kind of expression. People who had to cut up and dice other humans over and over again to the point of thinking of them as nothing but hunks of meat, eventually losing all of their humanity. The expression of which is covered in blood, was what Igor had on his face. Basil felt a shiver go down his spine.

“Y-Your majesty?”

Hearing Basil’s voice, he very slowly blinked his eyes. Slowly, light began to come back to Igor’s eyes.

“Your majesty, did something happen inside…”

“No, there’s no need to worry.”

His face returned to one of his usual face, and Basil breathed a sigh of relief.

“She said that someone that was working for Count Clobis was helping her out.”

“Someone working for Count Clobis? Are you saying that the Count made such order? But since the order for the arrest of Leticia was given while the Count was still inside the jail, he wouldn’t have had the time to do such a thing.”

“We’ll have to figure that out from now on.”

“Actually, I did round up the Count Clobis’s servants and investigated them in the past, and they mentioned someone that looked like a mercenary kept visiting the mansion recently. It may be that mercenary that helped Leticia out.”

“Mercenary huh…”

“If he really is a mercenary, then he would have already left long ago. Their characteristics make them do that usually anyways. We’ll continue investigating, but there won’t be any immediate threats to the queen anymore, so you won’t need to worry.”
