This might sound obvious, but your cognitive abilities tend to nose dive when you're tired. The worst part is, you won't even be aware of how bad you're doing until you've already messed up. Try playing a few rounds of chess after you've properly woken up and then play few more rounds very late at night (or morning depending on how late). You should notice a huge increase in the amount of unnecessary mistakes.
