Chapter 385 - I'll Be Dead (Checks & Christina BG, can skip)

Christina knew it was against the rule of being an assassin to make a fight long. Once they have the chance to end their target, they had to take it and flee the scene. That was one of the first things that they were taught. Breaking a bone in the spine, breaking a bone in the neck, breaking a bone in the rib that it would punture the heart. Everything that would give them plenty of time to escape.

But goddamn it, she whispered in her mind. How was she going to prove that she should be one of those people who would be chosen to advance in the next program if they would not show how she would be able to fight?

"Christina," Jaws voice echoed in the enclosed room. "Stop playing around."

"I can't!"

She knew that she was one of Jaw's favorite students and he had been more lenient with her. He tolerated this attitude of hers.

"If you're so persistent," Jaws said, "then I'm going to have to let the others who lost get back in the ring."

Christina's lips curved into a smile. "Now we're talking."

The woman who had been fighting Christina looked pissed. "I'm going to bury you."

"How are you going to be able to do that when you're already going to be six feet under?"

Now it was Christina who attacked. She put all her force on her feet and swung a leg in the air. The other woman managed to raise an arm to block it but it still threw her off balance.

Christina did not miss a beat and preyed on her opponent's disadvantage. She ran and launched herself until she was on the back of the other girl, repeatedly elbowing her shoulders. The woman threw her on the floor but Christina held on long enough that she was able to stretch her legs and toed the woman's chin.

When she got back to her feet, she saw the the woman was holding onto her mouth. She was bleeding and had a murderous look in her eyes.

Christina smiled at her. Now this opponent was mad. It was on a personal level. She doubted that this classmate would really let things get this bad in the field. But now it was just her emotions that were powering her.

And she wanted to beat the life out of Christina.

The opponent attacked and Christina willingly went on defense. Her eyes trying scope everything in her field and finally saw a blind spot. She immediately hit the girl under her rib and she flinched away, dropped to the floor, and twisted.

"Finish it!" said Checks.

She was already on it. She jumped over the other girl's body and gave her a big punch on the face, rendering her unconscious.

The bell dinged and the gates immediately slid open. Two people came in and dragged the girl's body out of the ring and in came the next opponent.

**

It took about five people. Five people before Christina willingly surrendered. Five people. That was her limit. Just imagine if she had been there in the first round. She wouldn't have survived.

The enemies that she had now already some fatigue in their body from their previous match. But she did her best anyway.

She just wished it would be enough to be able to catch the attention of Jaws.

As for the matches, Jaws continued letting the losers match against each other in the name of being fair.

"You know you're going to get accepted even if you had done poorly here, right?" Checks asked. He was still on the floor. There were already multiple ice bags around his body for all the bruises that he had acc.u.mulated.

"I didn't want to get into the next program doing less than what I can do."

"You're going to be a marksman, isn't that enough?"

"I don't want to kill people by gun. That's the coward's way of doing things. We only result to machinery when we have no other choice and if it would be too hard."

Checks licked his lips and Christina saw the hesitation in his eyes.

"Just spit it out."

"You're a good fighter, but you're not great, Christina. If ever it comes to the point that you get surrounded, you're going to die. There's a reason why we're getting trained in different fields. People have strengths and weaknesses. This is not one of yours."

Christina refused to bow her head. She knew that her best friend was only being honest and he was only looking out for her. Nonetheless, she could not help but feel hurt. She wanted to be able to fight like everybody.

In a life and death situation, she wanted to trust that her instincts and adrenaline would save her. That was not a desirable bet.

Christina thought, long and hard, about what she was going to say to her best friend. Came out with nothing but the deepest desire in her heart. "I want to be on the field. I don't want a desk job."

"Yeah, you're going to be our marksman. You're going to be the one that would save us from dying."

Christina groaned.

Checks got up and placed a hand on her knee. He smelt of sweat and blood. "It's going to be fine. I got your back and I know you got mine."

"Always," Christina replied.

"Don't worry, I'll share my money with you," he joked. "I'll treat you to all things that you want."

Christina smiled. "I'm going to have my own money."

Checks looked up the ceiling as if it were the sky. "Can you imagine that day that we would get out of here and see the world?"

"I can't wait," she said. But she already looked far ahead. She did not see anything in her future. "What comes after that?"

"We're going to retire with a shitload of money."

"My vision is blank. I think I'll be dead."
