Chapter 143 - TRACKING DOWN A SUSPECT

[KYLE POV]

While Jacy went to take a nap I called Baxter. I needed to know if he had found anything out yet. I didn't want to drag our feet on this investigation. Then it dawned on me that I hadn't told or even asked Winston and Jazmine about the incident. I hope like fucking hell that my cousin wasn't in on this.

"Hello Boss." Baxter always referred to me as boss when he was in work mode like this. There was no trace of his usually good natured attitude.

"Hello Baxter. Please tell me you have something for me." I could hear the intensity that was filling the words as I spoke.

"I'm afraid I haven't been able to narrow it down much yet. I am still reviewing the footage with my crew. We got started a little before nine. Winston and Jazmine were still sleeping when we woke them up." There was frustration clear in his voice about the delay that he had suffered.

"How did Winston seem?" I tried to not let it slide that I had neglected to even call my cousin.

"Shocked. That was the first emotion I got from him after he let us in. In truth, the real first emotion was rage. He didn't like me waking him up from his cat nap." I laughed at his words despite myself. I just couldn't help it. "But the moment he found out about Jacy he went from shocked, to worried, to pissed off. He is not happy that someone used his place to do this. He takes that as a personal insult. I imagine that he will be just as happy to find the culprit as we are. He has some choice words and moves for them too. Not only did they mess with his business, they messed with his Felicitas."

"I'm glad that I have you guys on my side. Thank you for working on this." I tried to tell him how grateful that I was but I don't think that I was doing it justice at all.

"She is my Felicitas as well, Kyle. That makes her important to me and the others. We will not sit idly by while someone does something like this."

"That's good to know. Well, in your small amount of investigating do you have a suspect yet? Or a list of possible suspects?"

"You won't like what I have to say." His tone was making that evident even if his words wouldn't have.

"Just tell me."

"From what I could tell, no one that wasn't supposed to be there entered the venue. That means it was all your wife's guests and the felines."

I had been hoping that this was an attempt from the wolves. As petty and stupid as that makes me sound I had been hoping that it wasn't someone in my own pack that had tried to kill my wife and baby. Now though, it was pretty much guaranteed that the perpetrator was someone that I knew, someone in my own pack. Dammit!

"Did anyone look suspicious near her seat or in the kitchen?" I ignored his words and tried to pass it off as if I already knew what he had to say. I guess, deep down, I did, I just didn't want to admit it to myself.

"I am still on that part. I am already having all of the staff rounded up. They will be here for interviews soon. They, of course, are the first on the list of suspects but I am not stopping there. I will track this person down and they will answer for their crimes."

"Good, there are a lot of people who are out for blood so I don't think that they will get away with this at all."

"Mind if I ask how she is doing, Boss? You haven't said one word about her condition since you called me." I could hear worry in his voice. I know that he was thinking that things had taken a turn for the worse and something even worse happened.

"She's fine. She woke up this morning. Right now she is napping. I can imagine that the poison left her system running on overdrive all night so even though she was sleeping, or unconscious, all night she still needs to sleep more."

"And the baby?" That was what he was the most worried about. I could tell that in his voice and it was because I didn't have the information last night.

"The baby is fine. The baby's heart rate is still strong and steady and the ultrasound didn't show any issues or causes for concern."

"That's good. When you told me what happened I couldn't believe that someone had done this with Jacy being pregnant. I mean, what kind of fucking monster does it take to try to kill a pregnant woman. No matter what they think about Jacy, she is still carrying a baby, your baby at that."

"Yeah, that is another reason for me to be angry." I just shook my head trying to keep from getting as angry as I was before. Slow deep breaths was what it took to calm my rage. "I am going to call Winston now, I need to talk to him. When you bring the suspects in and narrow them down, you let me know. I want to talk to the people that you are the most suspicious of."

"Sure thing, Boss. I will call you when I have something."

After I hung up with Baxter I called Winston, but he didn't answer. I could imagine that he was busy and would get back to me as soon as he could. Dammit. I wanted to go and find this person myself but I also refused to leave my wife. I was so torn about all of this.

An hour or so after I tried to call Winston there was someone ringing the buzzer for the front door. When I walked over and pressed the button for the video to be engaged, I saw that our doorman was looking a little confused.

"Yeah?" I asked him in a curt voice.

"Uhm, Mr. Donovan, Sir, there is a man here to see you. He is a little less than, uhm, presentable so I wanted to ask you before he comes up to the top floor. He is on your approved list, though." Less than presentable? What does that mean?

"Who is the visitor?" I asked him in an annoyed tone.

"Get out of the way, shrimp." I heard someone's gruff voice and then saw the owner of the voice. I already knew who it was when I heard him, but that was all that I could recognize. There was a feral look on Winston's face and blood and dirt as well. His clothes were filthy as well. "Hey, Kyle, I got someon-, err, I mean something for you to see. Can you come with me for a little bit?"

"I don't want to leave Jacy alone. I will need to call someone to come here before I leave. Is this 'something' that you have for me that I have been looking for since last night?" I left the question vague so that the door man wouldn't understand what it was.

"Sure is. I have been looking for it all day. Ever since Baxter told me what it was that you 'lost' last night I have been hunting the 'thing' down. I just called Baxter and he said that I had the right one as well. He wanted to call you but I told him that I wanted to surprise you first. Baxter will be meeting us when we get there." There was a glint in his eyes that told me that he had to show restraint so that he could get to me before killing this asshole first.

"Alright, let me call someone to sit with Jacy, don't go anywhere or do anything without me."

I was already dialing EZ's number before I ended the call to the people downstairs. EZ picked up after one ring, worry filling his tone.

"Kyle? Is everything OK?"

"Oh it's all fine." I let an angry purr fill my voice. "I need you to come sit with Jacy. She is napping and I don't want her to wake up alone."

"Oooh, I smell a development. Are my boys allowed to come with you to play?" I could tell that he was most likely grinning when he asked me that.

"I think that would be a great idea." I chuckled. "Maybe I should call Lucian as well."

"Yes, Lucy would definitely want to be there. From what I gathered today, even Deek would like to be there as well."

"The more, the merrier. It's going to be a fucking party."

I was well aware that I was starting to sound a little crazy and maniacal. I didn't care though. All that mattered was ending this current nightmare and wrapping it up so that we could move on. We had other things to worry about. Dammit, now that I've seen my baby on the ultrasound I know that I need to step up my game and get the house ready. I wasn't going to let anything bad happen ever.

Oh, this was going to be such a busy and exciting time. Ending the life of an enemy, then getting the nursery ready, building a crib, and spending nights together just feeling the baby move until it's time for the little bundle of adorableness to come home. Yeah, what the hell am I thinking? Jacy would never be OK with that. She wouldn't want cutesy nights. That's fine, I loved Jacy's ideas too.

Oh well, now that everyone had been called in and EZ was coming through the door, judging by the sound of the locks, I was able to go and take care of business.
