Chapter 46 - UNEXPECTED COMPLICATIONS

It took me less than thirty minutes to find the place I was looking for. This just goes to show that most local cops don't even try to find people with warrants out for their arrest. If they come across them in the process of another crime then they will arrest them, but they don't even look for these people that are so easy to find.

"This place looks like a fucking dump." I commented as I drove toward the property. I usually liked to lay a trap for my marks and make it easier to get them. But if I played my cards right this time I could get a lot more people with bounties out for them.

This could give me a little more leeway for a while. I could take some time off maybe, and then I could go on a vacation. I could rest and relax somewhere far away from work, and Kyle Donovan.

I was not going to be running away. It wasn't considered running away at all. It was just a chance to relax. That's all, really.

I pulled the truck to a stop when it was still a little ways away from the house. The house itself looked like it was falling apart. The ceiling was partially caved in on one spot. The siding was filthy and practically falling off. The porch looked like a death trap and a tetanus for a human. I didn't even want to touch the thing and I knew that I couldn't get tetanus.

Still, I needed to get out of the truck and look around. If there was anyone nearby then I would have to do my best to control the situation. I have been in situations far worse than this many times over.

Or so I had thought.

As soon as I got out of the truck the front door of the house opened. They must have had someone watching the driveway. And, it didn't help that I had the windows up on the truck. I hadn't been able to scent the area before I opened the door and by that time it was too late.

I smelled shifters. At least two of them. A bear and a wolf. So, my new mark Sandy Fink knew some non-humans, huh? Interesting. That was definitely not something I had expected.

I mean, it's not impossible for my kind and humans to befriend each other. I was best friends with a human after all. But what was weird was that they were all criminals and living here like this. I didn't like the way this was turning out. I needed to make sure that I was able to get out of here if things turned nasty.

"Who the fuck are you?" The big burly man that was now standing on the front porch asked as I took a few steps toward the house. He looked very animalistic in his face. A permanent looking snarl, stubble all over his chin, big, thick, bushy eyebrows, crazy looking yellow eyes. Not only that but he was very tall, possibly taller than Lucian, and his muscles were bulging with his barely controlled rage.

He was definitely the bear shifter I had smelled. And I thought this absentmindedly while looking at him, but I didn't think that porch would hold him much longer.

"I'm looking for Sandy Fink. Is he here?" I didn't go into detail about why I wanted the man, but it seemed I didn't need to, Mr. Bear was already on edge.

"Why the hell do you want Fink? He ain't got nothing to do with you." This man had definitely seen too many bad movies where they talked tough. I was already trying my best to hold back my laughter.

"I need to talk to him about something."

I didn't want the man to know that I was a bounty hunter. I just knew that this would end badly if I gave myself away too soon. I didn't know how many people were here right now. I know I could smell at least ten, but some of the scents were running together so it could have been many more than that. And I didn't know if there were more than one wolf and bear or not. It was a little hard to dissect all the scents that I was taking in at the moment.

"It's important business from Boston. I can't share it with anyone but him." I tried to play it off but this just made the man that much more angry. The vein on his forehead was bulging and throbbing so bad that it looked like it was going to explode out through the skin.

"Fuck you. I know what is waiting for Fink in Boston. You're either a cop or a bounty hunter. Do you seriously think we would hand him over to you? He's a friend of ours and friends help friends." Well, that was more loyalty than I expected from a bunch of criminals.

"I don't know what you're talking about." I thought playing dumb was the best thing to do here. "I don't know anything about that. Look, could you please just tell him that I'm here?" I hated acting all deferential and nice like this to men who were acting like royal assholes. If he kept it up much longer I would need to show him that I meant business.

"Just take your fucking ass back to Boston, we don't need another wolf here." So his sense of smell was working just fine. Well, at least I didn't have to worry about him not knowing what I was, since he already guessed who I was in a sense.

"What wolf from Boston?" A man's voice spoke from the inside of the run down and dilapidated house.

Unfortunately, that was a voice that I recognized all too well. It had been someone that I had known for the first eighteen years of my life. I watched, stunned, as the man who had spoken came out of the house.

He hadn't changed at all, he still had that same pale blonde hair that looked fake but was all too real. I could see the murky green color of his eyes that had sneered at me so many times when I was younger. His tall, lanky frame hadn't changed much either, but I knew that it was deceptive because he was still very strong.

"Do my eyes deceive me?" The man smiled as he looked right at me. "My, if it isn't my cousin Jacy."

"Hello Matthew, how's your brother been without me around?" I asked the question more as a taunt than anything.

"Victor has been just fine.. But he will be even better when I bring you back to him."
