Chapter 291 I Was A Tool?

Looking at Kang Jun without a single bit of hesitation, Mo Ruyi began to speak.

"First, let me tell you about my first husband, I married him when I was really young... actually, it was because I was already pregnant with your brother that we got married in the first place. My parents didn't quite like him. He was poor and a bit rough around the edges and so I ran away from my family in order to be with him."

After she spoke, Mo Ruyi gave a dry laugh before she continued. "After a few years, he became a small business owner. He struggled but he still remained kind. That man was so kind in fact, that he foolishly gave away all our savings to his friend who was having a hard time."

Hearing this, Kang Jun frowned and so did Mo Ruyi.

Mo Ruyi then touched her fringe before she spoke again, "We had the biggest fight that day... actually, I had just found out that I was a few weeks pregnant. I was going to tell him that day but then, after he told me what he had done..."

Looking into Kang Jun's eyes, Mo Ruyi said, "Jun, I wasn't going to keep you. I couldn't. If I did, I was worried that your father would work himself to death... but whether I kept you or not did not change what happened next..."

Hearing this come out of his mother's mouth, Kang Jun was slightly hurt but he did not voice this. Instead he said,

"What happened after that. It's clear that you aren't married to him anymore?" Kang Jun's voice contained a slight bit of spite, which Mo Ruyi easily caught.

Hearing this, My Ruyi didn't feel bad. She had expected such a reaction so she continued to speak. "One week after we had that fight. His business went bankrupt. And after that, that foolish man... it seems like he couldn't face either I or Yichen, so he thought we'd be better off if he just died..."

A great sadness appeared in Mo Ruyi's eyes.

Seeing this, Kang Jun felt no remorse. "So What? when he died you decided to marry rich?"

Looking at Kang Jun in the eyes, Mo Ruyi shook her head. "I called my parents after he had died... the housekeeper answered the phone and then she told me that my parents didn't want anything to do with me anymore. That I would have to deal with the consequences myself. And then just as I was planning on selling our house and finding a job, your grandmother, Zhengyi, came to my door and gave me a proposition. Marry her son, have a child with him and live with ease."

Hearing this, Kang Jun's frown intensified. Mo Ruyi saw this, but she did not give Kang Jun a chance to chime in.

Mo Ruyi: "She told me that her husband had schemed against her and had introduced a bastard into the family. Zhengyi wanted a true Kang heir and that if I could give that to her, she would take care of me and Yichen, forever."

"And you accepted that." Kang Jun stated.

Mo Ruyi nodded. "Of course I did. I would be a fool if I didn't."

Kang Jun couldn't deny what his mother had said so he just frowned and then he said, "But you didn't fulfil your end of the bargain. I'm not a Kang."

After saying this, Kang Jun paused before he sharpened his gaze. "Does he know?"

Kang Jun didn't need to specify who 'he' was, Mo Ruyi caught on pretty quickly.

"Mu's always known." Mo Ruyi said calmly. "Mu had no choice but to marry me and he did it. But I knew that he wasn't the type to be tied down. He was a womanizer. I had heard the rumours. And I was okay with that, so I decided to strike a deal with him. He could have his freedom, but I wanted you to be safe, as a Kang."

Kang Jun's eyes filled with annoyance. "And he accepted this?"

"Mu might seem a bit dull, annoying and unfatherly, but he's always been a good person, Jun. He accepted you as his own. But not only you. He also made sure no harm came to Zhi..." Mo Ruyi said softly.

As she said this, Kang Jun couldn't help but think back to the past. He did not see the man much in his childhood. But now Kang Jun understood why the man changed when Kang Nianxi had been brought home. He and Kang Zhi were not his children but Kang Nianxi was. The boy was the first true Kang heir.

"If he knew I wasn't a Kang, why did he allow me to become the heir?" Kang Jun asked curiously. It made no sense to him. Wouldn't a bastard like Kang Zhi, Kang Nianxi, Kang Liang or Kang Liu Ran, be better than someone with no blood connection to them?

Hearing this, Mo Ruyi gave a small laugh. "You have yourself to thank for that."

Kang Jun lifted his eyebrows in confusion.

Mo Ruyi: "Jun, you're intelligent, your charismatic and you draw everyone's attention. Zhi did well with the company but you made the company better than it ever was!"

Suddenly Kang Jun felt completely disgusted. "So you're saying I was a tool?"

"No!" Mo Ruyi said as her face twisted. "You're a Kang. Maybe not by blood, but by right."

For a moment, Kang Jun's usual cold demeanour cracked in front of someone who was not Lu AnLing. The man held his head as if he was in pain and then he screamed, "I never wanted to be a Kang!"

With his outburst, Mo Ruyi was taken aback.

Mo Ruyi had never thought that giving Kang Jun the chance at an easier life was something which would hurt him in the future, but it had.

This originated from the fact that Kang Jun had always wanted to be free and the Kang family were chains to the boy. Mo Ruyi's choice, which Kang Jun did not believe was wrong, had given him safety in the exchange of his freedom.

Mo Ruyi had never thought of it that way. In her mind, as long as Kang Jun was safe, the woman believed that that was enough. That for him, this equated to happiness for him as it did for her, but truly she was mistaken.
