182 The Secretary

As one, both Luke and Keren turned to Liz, whose eyebrow seemed to be doing a little dance on her forehead.

If there was one thing they knew about her, it was that she would never take an insult lying down.

Looking at each other, they smiled for once, knowing that this man was definitely going to get what was coming for him.

With a cheery smile, Keren said, "That's her, right there. Knock yourself out. A bit of advice, though: don't cry later."

As the balding man heard this, he shrugged with disbelief, as if he couldn't believe that he would ever cry.

He considered whether to reply, but he knew that this was the CEO's sister.

In fact, he knew who his new boss was. However, he had still spoken like that on purpose while making sure that they would hear, before asking the question to make his point clear:

He didn't respect this opportunistic woman at all.

Liz could read all of this on his face.

As his boss, she could scream at him right now, as typical bosses would do if they were shown disrespect.

Only, her case was special. She was in a sort of 'probation', where many eyes were on her, waiting for her to do things like these and fail. Using that opportunity, they would definitely pounce and try to rid her of the job she didn't deserve because of where she had come from.

Yes, these were all mostly 'cultured' swine who had grown up in neat little suburbs with hardworking parents. They knew their social status wasn't so high in the first place. SO, they delighted in looking down on those who were even lower.

Oh, she would definitely show them. But it would have to be through actions, not words.

Through actions, she had to show them that even though she had grown up in the poorest street in New York, she was no lesser than anyone who had gotten to this post through their hard work.

Controlling herself, Liz just nodded and said, "Hello," in a perfunctory manner before turning back to the empty site.

"Liz, we will be just ahead. I'll be showing Luke where the kitchen and other areas are. You can join us after you have a talk with your secretary."

As Liz nodded, Keren grasped Luke's arm and led him forward.

Liz noticed the slight flinch in Luke when she did so, so she shook her head, wondering just how long her friend was going to be shy.

Deciding to have a talk with him later, she turned to the balding man who had a very bored expression on his face.

Bored? What the hell was his problem now?

In a drawling voice, he said, "Miss. Elizabeth. I heard about the impromptu manner in which you were given the job. Hence, I know that you must not have a lot of, or any experience being in a leadership role, much less one where the outcome of a major project depends on you. For that purpose, I have collected this list of case studies that you can read to brush up on how a Director of Operations of Happle, Inc is supposed to function. Please go through them, I only came here to introduce myself and give them to you, so that our first day of work isn't a complete waste of time. Good night then."

Handing a dossier to Liz, the balding man thinned his lips and left. All the time, he looked as if he was smelling something rank that was near him, which was the clearest indication of what he thought about her.

Liz felt her blood boiling. Her secretary was dictating what she was supposed to do?

Why the hell had Will appointed this kind of yahoo as her secretary?

As she found no direction to displace her anger in, Liz could only swallow it down, which made her enter a 'pissed' mood that made her keep a neutral expression on her face while she walked up to Keren and Luke.

Seeing the expression on her face, both Keren and Luke couldn't help but burst into laughter for a second, before they were made to zip up their mouths due to a glare from Liz that felt like it could scorch them right where they stood.

Just at that moment, Liz heard a car pull up to the side.

It was a limousine, and there was only one person she knew who owned one.

Of course, it was her boyfriend.

"Go. Ask him why you're in this plight. I have to go catch a late meeting too. Let's meet here again in the morning, when the project officially starts."

Nodding, Liz waved at them both before striding towards the limousine.

Her initial plan had been to take a good, long look at the site so that she could be prepared the next day, but she was in no mood to do that now. So, she might as well ask Will why he had appointed that sourpuss.

Luke and Keren, on the other hand, turned back to the site, discussing where the kitchen should be and how large it would be.

Hence, they didn't hear the sudden yelp that emanated from Liz's mouth when she reached the limousine.

That yelp had been because the moment she reached the door, her boyfriend had reached out and yanked her inside by her waist in a flash.

The door closed behind her, but she couldn't even comprehend that because of something that had distracted her.

His arms were around her waist, hugging her tight, while he kissed her from behind on the nape of her neck, making her feel as if she had just been submerged in a pool of hot water after having suffered in the cold for a long time.

"How's that for a hello?"

These words drifted into her ears in a whisper, and they made Liz close her eyes as she enjoyed the feeling of being enveloped in his strong hands.

However, she had to say hello, too.

So, suddenly, Liz took his arm and placed it on her breast lightly, as she remembered just how enticing it had seemed to him on the terrace.

As she felt him freeze under her and let out a breath swiftly, she chuckled and said, "Hello, back at you."
