Chapter 39 - Harvest Festival (2)

Everyone was busy because of the Harvest Festival.

Even Maximilien who would normally be chasing after Brigitta causing trouble had to keep still and reexamine the Empire’s defense and alert magic systems.

The Chancellor too was stuck in his mansion buried in work.

The Knighthood was not so different. Everyone was on their feet planning guard duty and stations and training.

Only ‘they’ were free.

The Chief commander banned Brigitta from duty at the moment because of the scene that could be created by reporters and journalists if she was seen by them. And the Chancellor banned Karlos from the office because of the incident where all the staff of the shared office fainted because of his intense intimidating aura.

So they didn’t have anything to do except kill time in the training court along with that burden Diego.

“I don’t know about other things but I feel bad for Eva…”

“Mhmm.”

Eva recently started writing something saying those journalists are nothing compared to her novelist experience.

Brigitta didn’t know what she was writing but she still felt bad about how Eva was getting affected by this because of her.

“Uh, how’s she doing by the way? If she is not feeling well, uh, there is an offering that was sent to me for the Harvest Festival and I heard it’s good for the body.”

He asked in a shy manner holding a Palantico Iron sword.

“I see you have a lot of interest in Eva?”

“T, that’s simply because she is my favorite author. Anyway, I was thinking of giving it to her when we meet. I’m worried if she would feel uncomfortable even though she really shouldn’t since I genuinely want her to take it. But she declined the Mandragora root last time so…”

Brigitta tapped her shoulders with her sword.

Eva seemed to have a good impression of ‘Karl’ as well as the ‘Emperor’.

Well, most commoners did have a favorable impression of ‘Emperor Josef the 2nd’.

When Eva talked about the media and the law, Brigitta could sense Eva’s deep trust in the current Emperor.

Damn, it must be hard for them to like each other this much.

Karlos especially talked about Eva every time he had the chance when he was with Brigitta.

“Since uh, I don’t need any more strength as you can see. Or maybe you could say you got it as a gift and give it to her, uh well and just tell me if she enjoyed it I guess–”

“Hmmmm.”

“I, I’m not forcing…”

Brigitta looked at the Emperor like he was something pathetic.

She could see glimpses of Maximilien–the Maximilien that always strives to give her everything and anything possible– from Karlos.

Karlos was not as repellent as that lunatic though.

The men of this bloodline seemed to express their affection like how a male dire wolf offers a quarry.

Brigitta noticed what he was trying to do for Eva-whether from fanship or something else–was similar to Maximilien.

Hmmmm, well, if they like each other, maybe it’s not so bad.

“Eva is quite delicate.”

“Right? I’m worried about that too. She could collapse any moment being that light. When I held her last time–”

Brigitta was listening contently like a proud audience but a specific word hit her.

Brigitta grabbed her sword right away.

Did this forever-single do something to her?

“What? You did what?”

The Emperor noticed how the berserker’s eyes were a little off and realized that what he said was misunderstandable.

Karlos hurriedly shook his hands.

No. It’s a misunderstanding. It’s not like that. He pleaded with his eyes but to the half-gone-mad berserker, it didn’t pass.

“Eh? No, by accident. No, Bri. Bri? Do you really think I would have harassed her? Bri? Hey.”

“It is only right for your true loyal servant to correct your wrongs, Your Majesty.”

“How do you talk so well all of a sudden?!”

And dirt started swirling in the Sun Palace training court.

Brigitta’s physical advice didn’t stop until the head butler Frantz approached trembling to say that the Harvest Festival is starting soon.

Maximilien slid down on his chair listening to his cousin brother’s opening remarks.

Maximilien was never the type to follow court manners in events but today he really was too tired to follow court manners from reexamining artifacts and rewriting magic spells.

Acknowledging Max’s exhaustion, Duke Aragon didn’t criticize his bad posture unlike usual.

–The God of Grounds looked over our lands and therefore our lands have prospered this year. This a great fortune of the Empire and we will not forget the god’s blessing and…

“Blessing my a**, it’s all thanks to the fertilizer.”

“Shh, Duke Gardelli.”

“I mean, old man, isn’t it funny. That man of all people talking about a god.”

Maximilien placed his arms on the armrest and leaned back like he was lying down.

He looked like a result of humanization of impertinence, a little bit of annoyance and about 10 spoons of pride, and a bucket of insanity.

Duke Aragon just chuckled.

“You still think deeply for His Majesty.”

“Ha!”

Maximilien scoffed.

The nobles sitting below them flinched.

They worried if Duke Gardelli would cause a scene in such a formal event. It was unlikely but, Duke Gardelli was never predictable.

Duke Aragon looked at the nobles and turned back to face Maximilien.

Maximilien was furrowing his beautiful brows.

“Me? For that idiot? Have you finally gone mad, old man?”

“Hahaha.”

The nobles down there started hiding under their chairs now.

Nobles with age feared Duke Aragon more than Maximilien.

To them, this situation was like holding hay on fire in one hand and tap-dancing on a wooden chest containing a bomb.

One wrong move and something bad would happen.

It was either Maximilien’s magic or Duke Aragon’s fury.

Oh, please let the congratulatory speech end quickly. Please let me escape here safely.

The nobles of the Central and the Southern region prayed.

“Tsk Tsk.”

Duke Aragon looked at them and clicked his tongue.

That was his way of elegantly saying, ‘Young people nowadays have no mettle.’

He placed his attention back to Maximilien who unlike those young people had more than enough mettle.

“I am relieved by you and His Majesty’s close relationship.”

“You have to be careful not to age into an old madman, old man. Or can’t you see things clearly? Should I ask the Chancellor for a good optical store?”

“Ah, is your headache any better?”

“…”

The ‘headache’ he was talking about was the headache Maximilien got from working too hard for the Emperor.

Maximilien fell silent.

What a sly old man. It seemed like it was getting harder to win him with words as he got aged.

Maximilien flicked his head away from Duke Aragon from irritation. But even his annoyed face was so beautiful that the ladies on the other side blushed.

He was especially handsome today thanks to the butler of the Gardlli mansion who groomed him perfectly for the Harvest Festival.

However, the person who he wanted to present himself in the most handsome state was standing over there next to the Emperor not even looking at him.

Ha, even her indifference is so beautiful and splendid.

–And so today’s sun has risen. I express my gratitude to my loyal servants from all over the country who…

The Emperor who was standing on a shiny stage was speaking lies so well like he actually genuinely meant it.

Karlos pretended like he wasn’t, but spending a lot of time with the Chancellor made him into a great liar.

Loyal servants from all over the country?

What a joke.

Maximilien glanced over at the nobles of the Western region and sneered.

Unaware of what’s going to happen to them, they elegantly maintained their chins up and scanned around the Emperor.

Probably wondering where their spies were.

During the two days of preparation, Maximilien caught and imprisoned the spies they identified for treason.

He pretended to be examining the defense magic to block them from escaping so Maximilien’s shoulders were aching.

He barely had enough sleep and had to be on his foot all the time but that Emperor spends a relaxed time with my love in the training courts.

Maximilien’s eyes furrowed at the thought.

“It seems like something interesting is happening in the mines.”

Duke Aragon suddenly spoke.

Maximilien raised his brow.

This snaky man knew all of the most recent information despite only staying inside the South. He must have heard about the thing that was unveiled thanks to the crown prince.

The old gentleman smiled graciously and locked his fingers and placed them on his knees.

It was his habit when talking about something serious.

“It’s not a bad idea to start looking beyond our borders.”

“Pardon me, Duke Aragon. But I believe His Majesty has no intention to.”

“My, that’s a shame. He would be the best fit for it. More than anyone.”

Even more than the previous Emperor.

Duke Aragon kept that to himself and smiled bitterly.
