Chapter 128 - LIEUTENANT COLONEL AVERY I

"I don't really understand why you like that guy." Lieutenant Colonel Avery was driving her car like a bird in the sky, fast and free. "He didn't even try to fight me for you. Why did you even like him?"

Brown just sat beside her, looking down on his hands. "Can we not talk about him? I've been trying my best to forget him. You're not helping me at all."

"Fine. Fine. I won't speak about him." she responded in a bored tone. She's not like what everyone thought of her - fierce and cold. She was more like an elder sister to Brown.

"I never thought you would really postpone your mission this time." Brown commented to change their topic. "Is it so difficult?"

"For me, yes. They needed someone who's a genius in medical field and I am not. If I can just kill my way, I would certainly do it. But there are civilians and I don't want to involve them so I needed you to infiltrate the place first."

"Dr. Anderson isn't available until now?"

"That old man is busy with his research. He said that he will no longer involve himself in fighting. He was so annoying!"

Brown laughed at her. Hid uneasiness was cleared away and he felt calm now. He no longer care. This would be his only chance to right his wrong.

He read the information in his hand. He scrolled through the files and stopped on a picture of a man. 'Why is he here?'

"Lieutenant Colonel, is this man working in this hospital I'm infiltrating?"

"Ahh?" she turned her head to see the picture for a while. "Yeah. He is one of the children who's making the experiments. He is also the man who's giving us the tips."

"What do you mean?" Brown questioned again. It was because, the man in the picture was the same person who barged in to Jillyanna's room when she was hospitalized not long ago.

Avery slowed down the speed of her car and parked it on the side of the road so she can explain the matter to him. "This person is our source. I didn't know what happened but he started giving us information."

"I don't think I'm fit to do this work." Brown said at the same time he wanted to do it for Jillyanna and Travis.

Avery squinted her eyes and looked at him. "What's keeping you from doing this?"

"I met this man already."

"When and where?" Avery asked immediately. She had been waiting for him to do this and now he's refusing. This wasn't just fair!

Brown didn't know that he just messed her thoughts. "I saw him in Senyu Medical Center. It's a bit complicated. Anyway, let me do this."

"Tell me the story while I'm driving." Avery responded and started driving again.

Brown looked at the picture again before speaking. "Your cousin found the woman he had been looking for."

"That's great! When was it?"

"When we had our mission at the hotel. Just last week, she was sent to the hospital and this man came, claiming to be her family. What we know about her is that her mother died because someone was after her research. We speculated that her family must be behind all this. However, there wasn't any evidence to prove it."

"I felt sorry for my cousin's wife."

"I know. I will think of another way to infiltrate the place." Brown whispered. If things go well, he'll be able to bring justice to Jillyanna's and Travis' mother.

Avery continued driving through the darkest night while talking to him to relieve their boredom.

They arrived at her rented apartment near the building which she was monitoring. She had been staying there for half a year already and no one noticed any abnormalities from her activities.

She gave him the other room so he could take a rest while she was pulling all night to shop for his disguise.

She bought contact lenses for him and hair dye to change his hair color. She ordered several clothes for him and many other things before sleeping.

The next morning, Brown woke up and looked for something to eat. He made some buttered toast and scrambled eggs.

After an hour, Avery woke up and came out. She saw him drinking coffee with a newspaper in one of his hand. Just as she walked to the kitchen, the doorbell rang and the monitor showed a man with a big box.

She ran out and opened the door for him, signed the ipad to confirm delivery and brought the box inside.

"What are those?" Brown inquired while watching her open the package excitedly.

"These things will be for your disguise."

"I see." He put down the newspaper and walked towards her. He found some clothes, toiletries, hair color and many other things.

"Let's color your hair later."

"Okay."

Avery was actually a very nice person. She just didn't show it to anyone just like before. Because being betrayed once will make you put your defenses up.

It was different with Brown though. Brown wasn't some manly man. She's got feminine heart just like her. He was also very keen and discerning.

However, it was because of his keen observation and discerning eyes that led him to commit a mistake.

He thought Valkyrie wouldn't feel disgusted with him if he confessed. With his observation results, he thought that Valkyrie wouldn't hate him. But it wasn't the case.

The cruel reality thrashed his expectations.

She wasn't a Lieutenant Colonel yet when she first saw Brown with defeated look. He was sitting under a flame tree alone, looking into the distance with regret swimming in his eyes.

"I was betrayed once, you know." She opened up to him. He didn't turn to see her or spoke a word. She continued, "I guess you've heard it already."

"Major Avery, thrown out by her fiance of four years after finding him having an affair with her best friend." Brown stated. "I've heard of it."

"Pitiful, right?" she mocked herself with a sarcastic laughter.

Brown looked at her with his deep set eyes. He smiled and rub her head like she was his junior where in fact, it was the opposite.

"You are not pitiful. The pitiful ones are those people who betrayed you. They couldn't see your worth and value. Don't lower yourself, show them that your life is better now without any toxic like them."
