Chapter 3: Selfless Hero

Now then…

Though I returned to the capital on the same day, I couldn’t go straight to the guild.

When I passed through the gate and walked along the main street, I was surrounded by a lot of people.

“Welcome back, Jade-san!”

“Thank you for completing another quest!”

“Are you free tonight? If you’d like, please have a meal at our store!”

It’s already evening and I’m starving but I want to accept my next quest before I go eat.

I should just buy something and eat while I’m on the move, I always do that to save time anyway.

“I’m sorry. I want to go to the guild right now so I’ll eat at your store some other time.” (Jade)

“Ooooh! As expected of Jade-san!”

“Even though he doesn’t really have to work anymore, he just keeps taking quests without any rest!”

“He’s the ideal adventurer!”

“Because Jade-san works so hard every day, my family can enjoy their daily lives with peace of mind!”

“I’ve been more than happy to help! I’m going to go now!” (Jade)

Maybe because they thought it’d be bad if they got in the way of the quests, everyone began to open the path while singing words of praise.

I passed through the now open road and entered the guild.

“Jade-san is here!”

As soon as they saw me, the eyes of the people in the guild sparkled.

“Jade-san! I’m a big fan!”

“I’m also a fan! I became an adventurer after hearing your stories!”

“Look at me too! I have the same Reinforcement Crest as you!”

“Hey, hey! If you block his path, you’ll only be a nuisance!”

“Jade-san, this counter is open!”

“Jade-san, why don’t you use the special window on the 2nd floor?”

“A special counter huh, must be nice~ I want one too! It looks like it’d be in some luxurious room!”

“You can’t enter unless you’re at least a seven-petal class… Jade-san, please tell us what kind of room it is!”

“Ah, no, I just usually line up at the normal counter…” (Jade)

“Amazing! Even though he’s a ten-petal class, he still lines up at the general counter…!”

“I don’t know any other hero like Jade-san!”

“As expected of the Selfless Hero!”

“Cheers to the Selfless Hero!”

This is super embarrassing though!

I’m worried that Garnet-san might think that I’m a strange person.

After the commotion died down, I lined up at the 18th counter.

The line just kept going and soon enough, it was my turn.

The woman with the bluish hair—the receptionist, Garnet-san looked at me with sleepy eyes.

Only at this moment can I monopolize her gaze.

Only at this moment can I talk to her alone.

I live just for this moment alone.

It’s been 10 years since Garnet-san and I first met but we’ve only ever had work conversations. However, the happiest I’m ever in my life is always in this brief moment.

I held out the golem’s magic stone while my heart was beating faster.

“I’ve completed it!” (Jade)

“Name?” (Garnet)

“Jade!” (Jade)

“Please wait for a moment… Golem subjugation quest. Please let me confirm it first… it’s confirmed. Here’s the cheque with the 50 million Gol reward.” (Garnet)

If I take this, I’m going to have to bid farewell to Garnet-san again…

Thinking about it like that makes me feel depressed but if I don’t take it, I’ll just become a nuisance.

It’s not like I can get in the way of Garnet-san’s work.

I was about to take the cheque on the table but then…

Tsun.

“—!” (Jade)

Uwaaaaa!

UWAAAAAAAAAAA!

My fingertips accidentally touched Garnet-san’s fingertips!

Nice, cheque! Thank you!  Because of you, I was able to touch Garnet-san! I’ll make it a treasured item and never cash it in!

“Thank you for the cheque! I would like to receive the next quest just like this, please!” (Jade)

“Then, here are the quests for the ten-petal class.” (Garnet)

“This one, please!” (Jade)

After accepting the quest, I regretfully left the guild.

“Yaa~ Well, today was a good day.” (Jade)

I could only do formal conversations again today but our fingers touched. It’s a huge step forward.

If we keep on talking through the counter like this, then we’ll definitely become friends one day!

Daydreaming about my happy future, I rushed to the next quest’s site as usual.
