Chapter 293 - I'm not sick!

As they drove back to their apartment, Xiao Lei was thinking about something so hard that Han Ye could not help but ask, "What are you thinking about? If you don't stop frowning, you're going to get a permanent frown on your face."

Xiao Lei sighed. "Do you think Callum and Guangying are going to be OK?"

Han Ye shrugged as he looked at the street. He was driving again today. In fact, he preferred to drive nowadays. It was as if he were on a secret date with Xiao Lei... a date that only he knew.

"They would be fine. It's normal for couples to fight."

"Do you fight with Yuexue then?" Xiao Lei asked.

As if she hit a nerve, she noticed that he was clenching the steering wheel tighter. She also noticed the subtle changes in his expression, the way his eyelids twitched slightly and his jaws clenched up.

Feeling guilty, she muttered, "Erm, you don't have to say anything if you don't want."

Han Ye gulped and forced a smile onto his face so that she wouldn't be worried about it. "Of course I did... Don't you? With Yunjie."

Xiao Lei nodded. "Sometimes, we would argue, but it was rare. We had a lot of mini fights though."

She smiled with a hint of sadness. "I miss fighting with him... He'd always let me win in the end... even if I was being ridiculous."

Han Ye smiled. He continued to drive, and a moment later, he said, "Up until university, Yuexue and I didn't fight much, but I think that on one point, things started to change for both of us. I was too focused on work, to create a future for us, and as a result, I accidentally hurt her feelings by constantly forgetting about things. And we started fighting, mostly about little things like dishes and laundry, normal fights between couples... then it got worse and worse."

"Why?"

Han Ye shrugged. "Things happened in a gradient manner. First, it was a few hours late to dinner, then it was missing out on our anniversary dinners. At first, I didn't realize the impact on her. I thought she could understand it since she knew that I was trying to make everything better, to make us work."

He then smiled, and his smile was the same as Xiao Lei; it was one that was filled with sadness and regret and pain. "She understood me... but that didn't mean that she wasn't hurting. She was always alone, taking care of the house and making sure that I didn't have to worry about anything once I was at home... She was..."

There was a pained expression on his face as his words were caught in his throat; even his voice was getting lower and lower as he talked about his past with Yuexue.

Xiao Lei looked at him and said softly, "It was an accident. She probably just went out to get a breath of air."

Han Ye glanced at her briefly before looking back on the road. After a while, he chuckled and said, "Don't you think our lives are very similar? Our partners went out to do something for a while; mine went out to vent her frustration and yours went out for a mission, and poof! We lost them forever."

Xiao Lei turned to look outside the window. There were both sorrow and sadness in her eyes as she looked at the side mirror and mumbled, "Life is too fleeting... One moment they are there, and the next they are gone..."

She could only take solace in the fact that she had never wasted a day with her husband. She loved her husband deeply and dearly, up to the very last second she saw him, and she had never taken him for granted.

She then took a deep breath before putting a smile on her face as she looked at Han Ye and said animatedly, "But we can't let that hold us back forever. Death should not have its hold on us! We still have to move on. I'll try my best to get in terms with my loss, and so will you, Han Ye. We can do this."

She nearly caused Han Ye to step on the brake when she suddenly yelled, "Screw death!"

She put her palm out as she said so, and Han Ye glanced at it for a few seconds before placing his hand on top of hers. He let his palm hover above hers for a few seconds before clamping down onto it, interlocking his fingers with her.

Xiao Lei stopped breathing for a moment. She only expected a low five, not this.

"We will get through everything together," Han Ye said without looking at her. Not once did he loosen his hold on her hand; not even when her face turned red from embarrassment.

She might be unsure if she was ready to move on, but she did not pull her hand back.

...

At Du Mansion,

Callum was hiding behind Kai Xin as he yelled at Dr. Phillip, who had arrived not long ago, "F*ck off! I'm not sick! Why are you bringing that sh*t here?!"

He was lounging by the pool with Kai Xin, who was holding her sleeping son, when Dr. Phillip suddenly came and stood next to him with his hands behind his back. Callum had just said hi when Dr. Phillip pulled out a syringe with the biggest needle that Callum had ever seen in his life.

"Language!" Kai Xin warned Callum as she glared at him. In her arms was the just awoken Wyatt. It was a good thing that Wyatt had enough sleep earlier; otherwise, she would have slapped both of them for waking her son up.

"I'm sorry!" Callum mumbled.

"Why are you here with that scary instrument?" Kai Xin asked Dr. Phillip with a confused expression. "He's not sick!"

Dr. Phillip shrugged. "Du XiAn said he's sick in the head. Let me quote him, in verbatim, 'someone with his lack of tact and IQ has to be sick'."

Kai Xin chuckled. Her husband was definitely someone who held his grudges.

Upon hearing his words, Callum wanted to curse but when he saw the glare from Kai Xin, which had increased in intensity, he changed his wordings and snapped, "You're the one who is sick in the head! Your entire family is sick in the head!"

Dr. Phillip shrugged as he placed the syringe, which he used to merely scare Callum, into his bag. Once he placed his bag aside, he looked at Callum, who was now back on his lounge chair with his sunglasses back on, and asked, "Well, then why didn't you go to work for so many days?"

"I'm tired, so I'm taking a break," Callum mumbled.

"He's just throwing a tantrum," Kai Xin said. At first, Callum would still go to work. Well, he would go to the office, but he would barely do anything, and if he did something, there would always be mistakes. Hence, DX kicked him out of the office for a few days, and since then, Callum had been staying at home.

Not that Kai Xin minded his company. With the twins gone and Quinn at school, Kai Xin could use a few more companions. Besides, Little Monkey adored her uncle, and she loved it the most when Callum played with her.

"I saw Guangying earlier," Dr. Phillip said as he sat on a lounge chair that one of the servants brought over. "He looks thinner."

"Really?" Callum asked worriedly, but he quickly changed his expression back to one of aloofness. "I don't care."

"Come on..."

"Just tell me about the checkup. How are the babies?" Callum said tersely as he waved his hand nonchalantly.

Dr. Phillip reported to him, and once he was done, he said, "So what's next? You guys are going to take turns to go to the monthly checkup with Xiao Lei?"

"It's none of your business," Callum replied in an annoyed tone.

"It's my business though," Kai Xin said as she placed her son in a small but beautifully decorated blue crib. She then stared at Callum with her hands on her h.i.p.s as she said, "I'm going to take care of Xiao Lei, and since this thing concerns her, it concerns me as well. If you guys are going to fight like this, you guys shouldn't have become fathers in the first place."

"Why are you getting mad at me?" Callum mumbled. "I'm not the one who asked for a breakup. Go bother your best friend."

Slap!

"Ouch!" Callum glared at Dr. Phillip as he rubbed the top of his head. "What the f...udge!"

"Don't forget that I'm older than you and that while Du XiAn is not here, I can discipline you on his behalf, especially when you are talking respectfully to his wife," Dr. Phillip said. His words seemed serious, but the grin on his face had an obvious meaning, and that was: I enjoy beating the sh*t out of you.

Callum muttered something inaudible before turning away from them. He really did not want to talk to anyone anymore about his problems.
