Chapter 240 - I have to run away first

For her safety, she should not come back here again. So, she went to grab some cash from the last room in the underground. With her strength, she could only carry so much cash with her. After she got enough that she could carry, she did the same thing to the trap door of the a.d.u.l.t-sized room as well.

By the time she was ready to leave, it was already dawn.

Little Fan Wushuang stood outside her "toy/safe house" in a set of clothes, which she found in one of her closets inside the house, and stared at it. Other than the van the man drove, there were no other cars nearby.

This "toy/safe house" was built by her parents with her safety and comfort in mind. It was built on a tiny parcel of farmland. The only other house here was the main house, which was the house her parents and her would stay at whenever they came for a short trip.

"I don't think anyone has been here since Daddy and Mummy passed away," she thought as she glanced at the main house. She adjusted the heavy backpack strapped on her shoulder as she wondered whether she would be able to come back again.

She could not go home. She thought about going back earlier, but on second thought, she decided not to. They hired a man, who was ruthless enough to kill her. If it happened once, it could happen again. Little Fan Wushuang did not want to take the risk of being kidnapped again, because if it was to happen again, she doubted that she would be able to escape.

She had thought about calling the cops, but she did not trust them. Even if she led them to the vault where the man was kept, she had a feeling that the man would just lie through his teeth and said that he kidnapped her on his own volition.

"I have to run away first..." she thought. She put her hand into her pant pocket and pulled out the cards that she found in the vaults. As she crumpled them in her fist, she murmured, "I must stay alive..."

....

Han Ye stared at Xiao Lei as she told him about what she went through and how she escaped from the kidnapper. He had no doubt that the kidnapper's body would still be in the vault.

His eyes landed on her hand, the one she said was cut by the kidnapper.

Xiao Lei noticed it, and she lifted it to show him. "The scar is mostly gone. It's just a line now."

Han Ye scooted over slightly and ran his finger down the thin, faded scar as he muttered, "It must have been really scary and painful..."

She nodded. "I thought I was going to die a young v.i.r.g.i.n..."

He frowned, and looked at her, only to see a smile on her face.

She then put her hands behind her head and said, "So, not long after I escaped, I lost my backpack when I fell asleep on a train..."

Han Ye gasped. "The backpack with money in them?"

She sighed at the memory of losing everything and nodded once. "I cried a little, of course, but soon, I slapped myself and told myself that I couldn't be sad forever. So, I wandered around by myself, trying to learn the tricks of the streets for a while. I thought I could survive on my own, but boy, was I wrong! There were a lot of mean people who would hurt me. There were kind ones as well, but they kept asking me where my parents were... and I couldn't tell them anything, so I just ran away."

Xiao Lei grabbed a pillow and hugged it to herself as she continued, "And before something bad could happen to me, I found Yunjie. Well, more like he found me. He's been taking care of me ever since then."

When she turned to look at Han Ye, she noticed that he was looking at her with a pair of sad eyes, as if he felt sorry that he was not there to help her at her times of need.

She was about to say something when Han Ye said, "You won't have to run anymore."

Xiao Lei felt her heart skip a beat when she heard Han Ye's words. It was not so much the words... It was his eyes. He was looking at him with so much passion in his eyes that she could not look away from it.

"I won't let anyone hurt you," Han Ye added. Somehow, he had slowly inched slower to her earlier, to the point that his face was now mere inches away from hers.

"I..." Xiao Lei was at a loss for words. Suddenly, she felt as if the room were getting hotter and hotter, and she pushed herself up from the bed. "I think the air-conditioner is broken. I-I need to go. Zhihao is still at home," she muttered before leaving the room without so much of a glance back at him.

Han Ye clenched his fists and lay back down on the bed. "What was I thinking..." he chided himself. "She's a married woman, Han Ye. Don't let that slip past your mind anymore."

To rid himself of the stress that he was currently facing, he decided to go for a late workout despite being tired.

...

Meanwhile, Xiao Lei went back to her own unit. After checking on Xiao Zhihao, who was lying down on his bed with his earphones on, she went to take a shower. Her body felt hot and uncomfortable all of a sudden, and she needed a cold shower to cool herself down.

She turned on the shower, but instead of standing under the shower immediately, she went to look at the mirror. When she saw her own flushed face, the image of Han Ye being so close to her popped up in her mind. His eyes, his lips...

Unconsciously, Xiao Lei touched her lips when she thought about his perfectly formed lips. The determination in his eyes when he said, "I won't let anyone hurt you", made her feel protected once again, as if her husband was back by her side.

At the mere thought of her husband, Han Ye's image broke down in her mind and she shook her head. "Yunjie is coming back. He must!" she snapped as she looked at the mirror and gently slapped her cheeks. "I can't keep thinking about another man now!"

"I must be coming down with something..." she thought as she stepped into the cold shower.
