Chapter 191 - Guess I was too old when I got it

Upon hearing her, Head Manager Han shot a glare at her, but he quickly replaced it with a softer expression. With a sigh, he reached out and gently caressed the side of her neck, where a scar marred her otherwise perfect skin. "I thought this would be gone by now..."

Dr. Wing glanced up at him as if he was the only one she could see. She then took his hand before placing it against her cheek. When Head Manager Han looked at her with his usual expressionless face, she smiled.

The man that she grew up with always had the same facial expression on him. The only time she had seen him with a different expression was when they were in bed or when he was talking about his younger brother.

"Guess I was too old when I got it..." she said in a soft voice.

Head Manager Han gently caressed her cheek with the back of his hand.

Perhaps it was because of their similar background and that they were of the same age, but from the moment they were introduced to each other, they felt as if they had known each other since birth.

She was like him... She murdered her parents when she was twelve because of the horrific abuse that she suffered in their hands. And the scar wound on her neck? It was caused by her parents as a punishment for telling her teacher about the abuse that she suffered at home.

Instead of calling the cops first, the teacher called her parents to ask if everything was fine at home, which caused her parents to be suspicious. Her parents told the teacher that she had a tendency to lie whenever she did something wrong. Because her parents were quite popular in their neighborhood and they had always put on a kind front in of people, the teacher believed her.

When the young Dr. Wing arrived home that day, they beat her up. Her mother held her head down on a wooden plank while her father slowly inched an electric saw toward her neck. They ignored her painful screams as the electric saw cut into her neck and blood sprayed everywhere.

They did it to scare her, and once they felt that she was scared enough, they released her with a stern warning before leaving the house to go to a party. Thankfully, the wound was not that deep and Dr. Wing managed to sew herself up using the things in the first-aid kit.

That very night... she set the house up in fire after her parents came back from the party inebriated... She had tied them to the bed when they were sleeping, and she watched as they burned, and she waited until their bedroom was completely engulfed in the fire before saving herself.

Head Manager Han's hand traveled down to her hand, and he gently pushed the sleeve up slightly, revealing the burn mark on the inner part of her hand. It was the reminder from that night, and she had always held it as her badge of honor.

Head Manager Han took a subtle glance around, and upon making sure that no one was paying any attention to them, he led her into a storeroom. There, he hugged her tightly, to the point that she was feeling asphyxiation.

However, Dr. Wing smiled brightly, and she did not attempt to push him off. It was the first time Head Manager Han had hugged her in years... and knowing that it might be the last for a long time, she decided to cherish it for as long as she could.

"If I leave, can you come with me?" she asked with teary eyes. "I'm ready to quit the team..."

Head Manager Han did not answer her. Instead, he leaned down to kiss her on the lips, and she did not stop him. She grabbed onto his shirt as she reciprocated. Days after days, years after years, she had waited for him to return. For him to hold her in his arms again.

For him to forget about everything else and to start all over again...

He did not.

And when he left, his last order was for her to stay away from him and to live as if he were never in her life before.

And as a member of the Shenlong Family who was trained to obey orders no matter what, she did as what she was told even though it was unbearably hard at first.

Even when she knew where he was and what he was doing, and despite her wish to abandon everything and go drag him back, she had never appeared in front of him out of respect for his wish of a new and normal life.

"Han Xuan, I-" she mumbled. She wanted to say something, but he stopped her from talking by covering her mouth with his.

Head Manager Han finally released her, and as their swollen lips parted, he gazed into her eyes, and for the first time in a few years, he smiled at her. "I can't..."

He then walked out of the room without so much as a glance back at her. And the moment the door was closed, Dr. Wing looked up at the ceiling with her fists clenched tightly. Her eyes were filled with tears as she smiled wryly. "Yes, that's the cold, cruel man I love..."

....

Unlike Dr. Wing, Head Manager Han was calm and collected when he left the room. He had learned to compartmentalize his emotions so as to not show any unnecessary emotions, and he knew that Dr. Wing would do the same thing the moment she left the room.

Head Manager Han slowly made his way to one of the private rooms on the pediatrics floor. He nodded at the nurse that was stationed right outside of the room. The nurse, who was a retired member of the Shenlong Family, nodded back politely before getting back to her work.

Head Manager Han then slowly turned the knob of the door before walking in. There were partitions that separated the little boy huddling under the blanket from everyone else. Head Manager Han placed the teddy bear he was holding on the cabinet near the door before glancing at the little boy.

The little boy was sleeping with his back to the door, as if he had enough of the people coming in from the door.

Only the top of his bald head was peeking out from under the blanket.

As usual, Head Manager Han quickly went through the disinfectant process and changed his clothes to the ones provided by the hospital before walking to the bed.

As if he heard the almost non-existent footsteps, the little boy shivered and said, "No more injections..."

"You won't get any from me..."

Upon hearing his voice, the little boy blinked and turned his body around to face him. "Uncle Bear!"

His sunken cheeks and listless eyes seemed to be filled with vitality at the moment as he quickly pushed the blanket away from him and sat up, revealing his tiny body. "Did you bring me more teddy bears?" he asked before chuckling when he saw the teddy bear at the closet near the door. With a sheepish grin, he asked, "Is that for me?"

"Yes." Head Manager Han pulled a chair over and sat down before saying, "You can play with it tomorrow once the nurses disinfect it."

The boy nodded. Suddenly, he coughed loudly, causing Head Manager Han to stand up abruptly.

The little boy shook his head. "I'm fine..."

He then pulled his blanket up and lay back down on the bed. "Uncle Bear, I miss you... Why didn't you come to visit me sooner?"

"I'm busy with work."

"I want you to visit earlier so that you can meet my parents... *cough*... They don't believe me when I told them that you came to visit me." The little boy pouted.

"Hey, I told you not to tell anyone that I came to visit you..." Head Manager Han frowned before he took the boy's frail hand that was covered with holes from the daily injections. "Is it painful?" he asked softly.

Unlike him, the little boy was well-loved by everyone, yet fate had given him such a painful life.

The little boy smiled at him. "Not as much as before..."

They chatted for a while before a knock sounded. Dr. Wing came in with the nurse that was stationed outside earlier.

"Tay Dingxuan, time for your medicine," Dr. Wing said with a smile as she proceeded to go through the disinfectant process with her nurse.
