Chapter 42 - I'm glad you're here

"It's fine, Ms. Xiao. I should have woken you up in another manner," said Han Ye as he put his hand down. His professional smile was back on, but he was actually thinking, "I should have poked you with a stick next time."

He was thinking about a real stick, but when he saw her flushed face, he thought that she looked kind of adorable, and an NSFW image of her started to form itself in his mind, causing him to turn around before she could see the slight tenting in his pants.

At that time, Han Ye could hear his boss scolding him for his unprofessional mindset, "Han Ye! You're a disgrace! Don't tell people you're working for me!"

Just the thought of DX scolding him had Han Ye's mind back on the right track. He shook his head slightly as he thought about what to do.

"I-I'll pull the car over and wait for you right in front of here. Come out when you're ready," Han Ye muttered quickly after a while. He then walked away before she could say anything else.

"Is he angry at me?" Xiao Lei murmured to herself while she watched him rushed down the stairs. With a sigh, she quickly packed up her things and got out of the place. True enough, he was already parked right in front of the building by the time she was out of the door.

Unlike before, Han Ye did not open the car door for her, and Xiao Lei felt that it was her fault and did not mind the difference in treatment now.

"He's really angry with me now…" thought Xiao Lei as she entered the car.

Little did she know that the reason why Han Ye did not want to get out of the car was that he was unable to get his manhood to calm down. Perhaps it had been a long while, but the thing was standing straight in an almost embarrassing way. He had to put his gym bag that he always carried around on his lap in order to cover the damn thing!

When Xiao Lei tried to sit in the passenger seat, without even looking over at her, Han Ye said gruffly, "Please sit at the backseat, Ms. Xiao."

"But..." She wanted to say that he was not using the passenger seat for his bag anyway, but in the end, she shut her mouth and closed the door with a sad expression before she slid into the backseat.

Once she was buckled in, Han Ye started the car.

After a while, Han Ye asked in a much nicer tone, "Ms. Xiao, what happened? Why did you suddenly have another change of mind? It hasn't even been 12 hours."

He decided that talking would be better than the uncomfortable silence.

"I…" Xiao Lei hesitated, and she grabbed the end of her shirt as she tried to decide which part to say and which part to leave out.

"Did something happen?" Han Ye asked in a worried tone upon seeing her hesitation.

In the end, she nodded. "Han Ye… Actually, I need Director Shenlong's help."

With a brow raised, he took a quick glance at through the rearview mirror before he asked, "What kind of help?"

Xiao Lei glanced at the rearview mirror and their eyes met for a second before she looked away. "Erm… See, I'm being chased by someone, and I don't think I can keep my son safe at the moment. If I agree to be the surrogate mother, can Director Shenlong protects my son? He doesn't even need to protect me, I just want to ensure the safety of my son."

Hearing her request, Han Ye could not help but say, "Ms. Xiao, I'm sure he can do it, but I don't think you should do it if it's not what you really want. Thank god I haven't mentioned anything to Director Shenlong or Mr. Luo, or they would have been devastated. Even though they are men, that doesn't mean that they don't feel disappointment."

She knew about it as well, but hearing it from Han Ye made her feel worse. "I'm sorry…"

He sighed. Upsetting her was not his intention. He just wanted to make it clear to her. "If you're really sure this time, then I'll help you arrange the matter."

"I'm sure! Really! I won't change my mind anymore!"

"Alright then… Where would you like me to drop you off?"

She thought for a while before saying, "Erm… I can't go back to my house now. The guy who is chasing me found out where I was and he sent his men over… I had to leave in a hurry... That's why I forgot to even bring out my charger…"

"Please tell me more."

Xiao Lei told him about how she found the two men in her house, and how after a scuffle, she managed to escape.

Han Ye did not realize that she nearly died today and felt bad for chiding her earlier. After thinking for a while, he said, "Well, not a problem. I'll put you in Hotel W for now."

Xiao Lei shook her head. "He might find me there as well!"

"What is his name?"

"Murong Yu."

"I'll tell the hotel to cross-check for everyone named Murong Yu and the surname Murong. Don't worry, Ms. Xiao. You know the Head Manager Han that we met previously?"

Xiao Lei nodded.

"I'll ask him to send a few men to guard your door."

"But…"

"Erm…" Han Ye glanced at the clock on the car's dashboard and said wryly, "It's a little late for me to rent another place for you… Other than a hotel..."

Xiao Lei interrupted him by asking suddenly, "Han Ye, I hope that you don't think badly of me, but… can you stay with me tonight?"

When he heard her request, Han Ye's eyes widened. He then noticed the traffic light changing and immediately slammed on the brakes, causing them to jerk forward.

"Argh!" Xiao Lei cried out softly as she rubbed her shoulder blade that was hurting from being pulled by the seatbelt.

Han Ye ran his fingers through his hair and turned around to look at her. With a confused expression, he asked, "I'm sorry, Ms. Xiao Lei, but what?!"

"What?" Xiao Lei asked innocently.

"I think… we just know each other…"

"What?" Xiao Lei frowned. She then laughed softly and said, "I think you misunderstood. It's just that I don't know anyone else here, and you're the only one I know in the entire city."

"I don't think it's safe for us to stay together," murmured Han Ye as he turned back to face the front. When he glanced at the rearview mirror, he saw a lonely expression on her face that was quickly replaced by uncertainty. Still, he was more worried about his own reaction toward this woman that he barely knew than anything else.

However, when he looked at her again, he saw the disappointed look and the slight fear and worry in her eyes. In the end, he relented. He did not want to, but he still said, "Alright, I'll get us a family suite. That should give us both some privacy."

Xiao Lei nodded and smiled, "Thanks, Han Ye!"

She was genuinely happy, and after hearing his answer, she could finally relax after what she went through in the afternoon. Even though they had not seen each other for decades, he was still the only one she knew. And even though she could not rely on him to protect her, but at least she would not have to worry about him killing her.

If anything were to happen, she would just yell out Wu Yuexue's name. That always worked like a charm. When they were a kid, no matter how angry or annoyed he was at her, the moment she said she was going to tell Wu Yuexue that he bullied her, Han Ye would immediately walk away.

After Han Ye started driving toward the direction of the hotel, Xiao Lei stole a glance at Han Ye.

"I'm glad you're here…" thought Xiao Lei with a genuine smile before she looked outside.
