Chapter 12 - A child's life is not a game

Once the meeting stopped for a lunch break, while they were on the way to eat at a Chinese Restaurant near the building of Du Corporation, Han Ye remembered the message earlier and asked Callum, "Director Shenlong, do you know a woman called Xiao Lei?"

Han Ye was driving his car while DX and Callum sat in the backseat. As usual, DX was still working at the moment.

"Xiao Lei? No, I- Wait!" Callum was looking at the stock market using his phone when Han Ye talked to him and so, he nearly made the mistake of saying that he did not know her. Once he realized his mistake, he gasped and leaned forward, pulling the headrest of Han Ye's seat a little. "Xiao Lei? Yeah! I know her! Did she call you? What did she say?"

Han Ye nodded while he kept his eyes on the road. "Yeah. She said she's interested, but she didn't say what."

"Damn! She actually agreed!" Callum pulled back a fist before he chuckled. "He's going to be really happy once he hears about this!"

He took his phone out and it was then that he remembered that he had turned it off earlier. When he saw the missed calls and the short message "I'm interested. Xiao Lei." from her, he knew that Han Ye was telling the truth and not pulling pranks on him.

"Who is that? Is that one of your exes coming back to haunt you?" asked DX as he continued to read the emails on his iPad. He did not like working at home nowadays, so he tried to finish off everything before he went home. Besides, with a set of teenage twins, a heavily pregnant wife, and a toddler at home, there was no way he would be able to get any work done.

Still, DX never complained about it. In fact, he always looked forward to going home. Especially now that his cute daughter had started speaking and would keep calling "Dada" over and over again.

Upon hearing DX's question, Callum laughed softly. "No! But she might carry my baby soon… Well, me and my dear Guang Ying!" said Callum. At that, he took out his phone and dialed Guang Ying.

The moment Guang Ying picked up, Callum said excitedly, "She said yes!"

At the psychiatrist clinic where he was currently at, Guang Ying was sitting in the waiting room. When he heard what Callum said, he stood up instantly in excitement. "Great! Get everything ready then!"

He was just as excited at Callum. Even though he had never said anything about it, he really wanted to hold a mini-Callum in his arms. He had seen the photo of a young Callum, and his first thought when he saw the photo was that Callum looked cute in a defiant manner. Of course, he had no intention of letting their son be as dumb as Callum.

"Do you want to go see her in person today?" Callum asked.

Guang Ying glanced at the door to the doctor's room and sighed. "I can't go now. I'm with Ma at Dr. Wong's clinic and this might take another two hours... But I want to get things done today... Can you go and talk to Ms. Xiao Lei in details? I'll send you a list of things to do, and please don't say anything stupid to her."

Guang Ying's mother was kidnapped by an evil woman and kept captive for years. When she finally escaped, her mind had shut down to protect her from the memories of those awful, torturous years where she was abused almost daily.

At that time, she was saved by another man, and it was two years ago that Guang Ying finally reunited with his mother after 20 years of separation. Things had been rough at first as his mother, Lin, could not recognize Guang Ying and she kept rejecting him.

However, after spending some time together, she remembered him again, but with that, those bad memories came back as well. She still required counseling to help her deal with those memories. Given that Guang Ying no longer managed Luo Corporation, he had plenty of free times.

Thus, he had been taking care of his mother instead of hiring a nurse, and he frequently returned to his grandfather's house to play chess with the old man as well. A couple of times a week, he would go to Avenge, a club he invested in and was a silent owner of.

Previously, the club was under ZiYan's name. However, because ZiYan was busy handling the matters at Callum's IT company, he had hired a manager to oversee the place. Guang Ying would just go down there to make sure that everyone was doing their job and that no one tried to do anything stupid in the club that he loved.

When Guang Ying did not hear a reply, he asked, "Did you hear what I said earlier?"

"Yeah." Callum was pouting when he heard the last sentence, that was why he did not reply immediately. He felt as if no one ever trusted him to do a good job. "I can't go. As in I can't go now. I still have to return the meeting later."

Having overheard their conversation, DX looked up from his iPad. He looked at Han Ye as he said nonchalantly, "Han Ye, you go."

Callum turned to look at DX before he said, "What? No, wait a minute, Guang Ying. My brother is telling Han Ye to go."

Guang Ying thought about it for a second before nodding. "Then you brief him."

Han Ye was more reliable than Callum, and Guang Ying had a feeling that Han Ye would do a better job at questioning than Callum. Callum was great at interrogation, but his way tended to be bloody and often involved a weapon of sort. Guang Ying had no doubt that Callum would be able to do the normal way of questioning someone, but he was worried that Callum might not know what questions to ask.

"The meeting, President Du?" Han Ye asked as he glanced at the rearview mirror for a short second.

"I'll be fine. The second half of the meeting would be the usual updates. I can handle those myself. After lunch, prepare the files for me and leave it at my desk. Then you can go and handle this Ms. Xiao Lei thing." DX looked back at his iPad.

However, he continued to say, "I think that I don't need to remind you that she's a potential mother for my nephew. Make sure that you get all the information."

"Don't worry, President Du."

After he hung up the call, Callum thanked both his brother and Han Ye for their help.

DX placed his iPad down on his lap before asking, "Are you sure about this?"

"What?" Callum was still smiling as he looked at his brother.

"Other than Guang Ying, you've never been with another man. I don't care if you want to date a man, but if this is just a phase, then I won't agree to you having a child. Have you ever thought about what would happen if things don't work out in the end?"

Callum dropped his smile. He thought for a moment before saying, "I thought about it, and we talked about this before as well. We want a child. Right now, we don't know what would happen in the future, but we know that no matter what, no matter whose blood runs in the child, we'll love him or her just the same. Even if one day Guang Ying realized that he doesn't love me, then... then even if it kills me, I'd let him go… But nothing can stop me from continuing to love our child, and I know that he'll do the same."

DX glanced at his younger brother. His late father, Du Jin, and he himself had been protecting Callum ever since Callum came to live with them. However, Callum was an a.d.u.l.t now, and DX did not want to interfere too much in his life. He just felt that as an older brother, he had the responsibility to advise his brother.

"Fine. I just want to make sure that this is not just an impulse thing for you two. A child's life is not a game. Don't forget."

Callum nodded.
