Chapter 4 - That kid

"That kid…" Guang Ying growled slightly when he heard what the young man was saying earlier. He hated this kind of disgusting people who reminded him of his younger half-brother.

Xiao Lei noticed Guang Ying's expression. She merely gave him a "this-is-usual-here" shrug before saying, "Just ignore him, Mr. Luo. He's just a dumb kid."

She saw her son looking at their young neighbor girl earlier and did not say anything. She knew how he felt about the young girl. Before he ran out into the street earlier and got into that accident, they had an argument. Her son was angry at her for refusing him when he said that he wanted to come home for the summer holiday.

He wanted to see the girl, Yun Qi, and some of his old friends, but Xiao Lei told him no. She told him to stay at the dormitory and play there with his new friends. In fact, if not for the accident, she would have sent him back to his dormitory after dinner. As much as possible, she wanted to keep him away from this place.

She knew that as a scholarship student, he was having a hard time at the school, but if he were to return here, she was afraid that he would not want to live again. That was not the kind of life she wanted for him.

Her son had called her selfish and unfeeling, but what he did not know was that she tried to help his friend before.

After her husband disappeared and her son went to Imperial Secondary, she had sent an anonymous tip to Child Protection Services. However, her attempt to save the girl was futile as the girl did not want to leave her family.

Even when they saw her bruises and confirmed that there was something wrong, CPS could not do anything as the girl told them that she hurt herself when she was playing with her friends. No matter how much they tried to talk to Yun Qi, the young girl merely said that she loved her family and wanted to stay at home.

It bothered Xiao Lei, but she herself was not in the position to keep helping someone who did not want to be helped. All she could do was to make sure that the young girl was still alive. Every morning, and every night, she would go to her son's bedroom to take a glimpse at the girl.

Since the proximity of the house was only a leap away, it was easy for her to see the girl when she was sleeping on her bed.

She knew what her son wanted, but as a mother, she had to make sure that her son could get out of here before something else happened. This kind of place was bad for a child's growth. Furthermore, she had already lost her husband; she would not lose her son as well.

Looking at Callum and Guang Ying, she stood awkwardly as she said, "Erm… I'd invite you inside, but-"

"Thanks." Guang Ying interrupted her and walked into the house before she could say anything else.

"Erm… Sir?" Xiao Lei called out but there was no response. When she looked at Callum, the latter merely smiled and said, "My Guang Ying can be quite pushy. Let's just go."

"But your car…" She took a quick glance at the car worriedly.

"If it gets stolen, I still have plenty of cars at home," said Callum nonchalantly before he walked into the house as well.

Xiao Lei felt that their actions were a little rude, considering that they just met. However, she was a little afraid of them to say no. One, they did not look like a normal hooligan. In fact, she felt that she had seen them before.

Secondly, they paid for her son's medical bill earlier. She had caught a glimpse of it. Imperial Hospital was really as expensive as what she thought. That few hours of sleeping in a bed cost almost $300. That was half of her monthly salary!

Thirdly, they were so handsome that she found it hard to say no to them!

She might be a married woman, but she still appreciated a good eye candy every now and then!

Thus, she dragged herself in. Even if she was poor, she wanted to be a gracious host to them.

When they were inside, Callum and Guang Ying took a quick glance of their surroundings. The house was small, a little devoid of personal possession, and also a little messy. In the living room, there was a small three-seater black couch and a small coffee table as well as countless books that were left all over the place.

Xiao Lei blushed slightly as she picked up the clothes and newspapers that were strewn around the floor. As she picked up the books that she left behind, she said wryly, "Please sit. I'll get you some tea… Erm, I'd ask if you want coffee but we ran out of coffee last month. I hope you don't mind."

"It's fine," said Callum as he smiled at her.

After she went into the kitchen, Guang Ying raised an eye at Callum and smirked, "Without my mother and me, or the maids, this would be the state of your house."

"I'm not that bad." Callum protested as he glanced around the place. Even though it was better now, it was still pretty messy.

"Hahaha!" Guang Ying laughed in a mocking manner before he scoffed, "You're worse! At least I don't see her underwear lying around the floor..."

"But you love my underwear!"

Guang Ying rolled his eyes as he replied, "When it's on you! Also, stop talking about your undies!"

Callum wanted to retort with "You started it first" but he figured that nothing good would come out of this. Hence, he kept his mouth shut. The two years with Guang Ying was not for nothing. At least, he knew when to shut his mouth now.
