Chapter 60 - The Unsettling Laughter

Name:The Idol's Wife Author:Tea_Tae
The corridor was completely empty except for two guards, who were standing outside one of the rooms. It was quite late at night, almost 1 AM, but the guards showed no signs of sleep. They were on high alert, keeping an eye out for any possible intruders.

A doctor approached the room. One of the guards blocked his way.

"I need to give the patient his medicines," the doctor said wearily.

"ID?" the guard demanded. Sighing, the doctor took out his ID card. The guard took it and looked at it, trying to match the picture with the doctor's face. Verifying the identity of the doctor, the guard let him in.

The doctor entered the room. The patient, Kwon Jiwon, was still in a coma. The medical team will keep him under observation for one more week. If he did not wake up after a week, then there was no hope of his survival.

At a corner of the room, was a sofa. On it lay a woman wearing a face mask. She was sleeping soundly. The medical staff were very curious about the woman's identity. No one knew who she was or why she was guarding the patient so protectively. Even the higher ups were being secretive about her identity. He sighed and turned around.

The doctor shook his head and took out an injection and medicine bottle from his pocket. Filling the injection with the clear liquid. He put the bottle on a tray and turned back to inject the liquid into KJ. The doctor was about to inject it into the patient when a pair of hands grabbed him.

Startled by the movement, the doctor looked up to see the woman, suddenly wide awake. She snatched the injection from his hands.

"Excuse me!" the doctor exclaimed. "This is his medicine! I need to inject this into him!"

But the woman paid no heed to him. She sniffed the medicine. Her eyes widened in horror.

"Where did you get this?" she asked quietly.

"The head surgeon prescribed this," the doctor frowned. "He asked us to change KJ's medicines and gave me this bottle. This stabilizes the heart."

"Did you check this medicine?" she asked.

"No," he admitted. "I was ordered to inject it immediately. We are to give KJ one dose of it everyday."

"Where is the head surgeon?" she asked.

"I think he is at his office now," the doctor said, unsure. "What happened?"

"You can't give him this medicine," the woman snapped.

"Why not?"

"Because this is animal euthanasia," she revealed. "This is injected into dogs to kill them."

The doctor was stunned at the revelation.

"Impossible!" he protested. "Our head surgeon is among the best doctors in this country! He won't make a mistake like this!"

"He didn't make a mistake," the woman said calmly. "He did it deliberately to kill KJ."

Before the doctor could say anything else, the woman darted out of the door. Mirae ran straight upstairs, towards the head surgeon's office.

She burst through the door but the head surgeon was nowhere in sight.

"Shit!" she cursed and backed out. She caught a shadow, moving towards the emergency exit. It was the head surgeon.

"Stop you son of a bitch!" she screamed.

Mirae ran after him, chasing him through the floors, as he tried to escape. He ran towards the ground floor and bustled through the reception's door, passing by the corridor as Mirae sprinted after him relentlessly. He ran past the people in the hallway, pushing and shoving everyone aside.

"Move!" he shouted at some interns as he ran past them. A wardboy was pushing a medicine trolley and almost collided with the surgeon. He grabbed the cart and pushed it towards his chaser, but she jumped over it.

The head surgeon was out of breath but he kept on running towards the car parking but Mirae was too fast. She heaved forward and tackled him to the ground.

"Let me go, you slut!" he barked as he tried to break free but was no match for Mirae's strength. How did this frail looking girl become so strong? The surgeon wondered as he squirmed under her.

Mirae punched him in the face. He felt blood gushing out of his mouth and a few of his teeth were knocked out.

"Bitch!" he cursed. Mirae hit him again. This time, his jaw was dislocated. The woman was too damn strong!

The onlookers were confused. Why was a woman hitting their head surgeon?

"Out of the way!" One of Mirae's guards shooed the crowd aside. He bowed in front of Mirae.

"CEO, please let us handle him," he requested.

"Make him confess his crime," she ordered him. "Get the names of his masters from the Cartel."

The head surgeon, who was still trapped by Mirae's grip wheezed in laughter.

"You will never find out!" he taunted. "My masters are too powerful and dangerous! You're just a mere girl. You'll never find them!"

Mirae glared at him. A dangerous gleam lit in her eyes.

"I'll pull them all out from their hiding places," she challenged him. "That is my promise."

The man kept on laughing.

"Oh you silly girl!" he sneered. "They aren't hiding. You know where they are."

His words sent a chill down her spine. What did he mean?

The guard kicked down the surgeon's head.

"Ma'am let us handle it from here," the guard requested again. "Please go and rest."

Nodding curtly, Mirae let the guard pull the surgeon up. He was weak but his face was still etched in an unnerving smile.

"Make sure he gives us the names," Mirae ordered the guard. "Keep him alive but torture him in any way you can. If he doesn't spill in 24 hours, send him to Hyun Jung. Arrange for him to be transferred to one of our jails."

"Understood madam," the guard bowed as he pulled the smiling maniac away.

….

"Hyun Jung definitely hated you a lot,"Jade sighed.  "How did you two become friends?"

"We didn't really hate each other," KJ admitted. "We were kids. We simply did not understand each other at that time."

"Seems so," Jade said, pointing his paw at KJ and Hyun Jung's younger versions. They watched as Jiwon and Hyun Jung were wiping out trophies. Ms. Sohee did not kid around with her punishments.

The trophy house was almost as big as Jiwon's living room back home. The school probably had hundreds if not thousands of trophies over the years. Poor Jiwon and Hyun Jung were tasked with cleaning all the accolades within one week.

Groaning at the monumental task in hand, Hyun Jung began to lazily wipe the trophies. Jiwon, who had OCD, was more adept at cleaning things than Hyun Jung did.

"Do it properly!" Jiwon snapped. "There are so many prints left on those trophies."

He pointed at some of the awards Hyun Jung wiped. A few of them had fingerprint marks over them, as Hyun Jung handled them roughly.

"I don't care about all this," Hyun Jung retorted. "If you like cleaning so much, why don't you do it all by yourself?"

"Ms. Sohee punished both of us together," Jiwon replied. "We need to work together-"

Hyun Jung threw the dirty cloth at him. Taken aback by the insult, Jiwon's face flushed with anger.

"That's it!" he shrieked and jumped on Hyun Jung, determined to fight.
