Chapter 246 - Careless Whisper

That night after the couple returned home.

Caroline was getting restless. Did her husband saw her gadgets?

If yes, then why he acted like he didn't? She desperately wanted to believe that he didn't see those...but she was sure he'd seen them because the bedside table was located near the bathroom unless he walked to the bathroom with eyes closed.

Dammit!

Guilt was eating her conscience.

She wanted to ask him if he had seen her gadgets?

But she was afraid to ask because she was damn sure he will start questioning her about the reason why she made all those lies.

She was blaming herself for being careless! If only she had put the gadgets inside the drawers of her closets, her husband would never see those items!

Sighing, she went to the living room to find her husband. He wasn't in the living room, she found him in the swimming pool.

She sat on the lounger chair and watched her husband executing perfect butterfly strokes in the pool.

Mike saw his lovely wife looking at him, he urged her to join him in the water. "Wanna join me, sweetie?" he asked.

Caroline shook her head and refused his invitation. "No. I'm not in the mood to go swimming tonight. I'll just look at you and admire the fantastic view of the city's skyline," she said.

"Alright," Mike said and continue frolicking in the pool.

Caroline alternated watching the view of the city and glancing at her husband. Although he was not showing anything in his actions about the gadgets, that doesn't mean he didn't see those items.

Maybe...he saw the gadgets but he just doesn't want to talk about it?

Maybe, she should forget about this issue and just pretend that it never happened. But even if her husband isn't showing any anger on his face and no intention of confronting her, she should at least think of a proper and believable reason how to answer him if he will start asking questions.

But she can't think straight when she is in the same room as her husband. She needs to go back to the bedroom and think of a good excuse.

She rose to her feet. "Hubby, I'm going back to the bedroom," she told him.

Mike nods his head. "Okay, wifey. I'll finish my swimming after thirty minutes."

Caroline exited the swimming pool area and went back to the master's bedroom.

She lies down on the bed and starts a brainstorming session.

Fifteen minutes went by.

She still can't think of any credible reason or excuse!

Dang!

She's getting frustrated as minutes pass by. She's dreading for the time to come that her husband would ask about it and she can't answer his question.

As much as she wanted to shove the issue under the rug and pretend it didn't happen she just can't...she feels that his husband saw the gadgets and he was just waiting for the right time to ask her about it.

'Dear God, please help me get out of this mess!' she repeated the prayer in her mind over and over again. Hoping that God will hear her prayers this time.

She was dreading the time that the door will open up and her husband will look at her intensely in the eyes and starts firing questions at her.

Damn!

Ugh, since she can't come up with a believable answer yet, she will just sleep early to avoid her husband's questions.

That's right!

Sleeping early can help her this time!

She changed into her pajamas and lies down in the bed, wrapping the blanket around her body and closed her eyes, hoping sleep will claim her consciousness, ASAP!

Back in the pool area.

Mike was in deep thoughts while looking at the stunning view of the city's skyline. He was no longer in the water, currently sitting on the lounger chair wearing dry clothes. He stopped swimming the moment his wife left the pool area.

He was deeply bothered after seeing his wife's phone and tablet inside her bedroom in Eastwood Subdivision.

He released a deep sigh.

He's still feeling happy after the DNA test result. He doesn't want to ruin his happy mood, their happiness. If he starts asking her tonight why she lied to him, they might end up quarreling and she might leave his side and go back to her house.

Shit!

It's something that he can't afford to happen. He wants to see his pregnant wife every day, not far away!

He wishes that he didn't see those gadgets at all! His mind wouldn't have been in this conflicting condition right now.

Should he just forget about seeing those gadgets and no longer ask his wife about it?

Maybe it's better that way...he wouldn't be able to bear it if she keeps making lies after lies and at the end of their confrontation, he might say something hurtful to her that would send her away. Now that she is pregnant with their first child. He can't afford that she will disappear again just because of the issue of the gadgets.

The truth of those items is not worth the mess it will create.

So...he'd better forget it!

But he needs to talk to someone, he needs to tell his brother John about it and ask his opinion before he will forget this issue. He needs someone's opinion to analyze the situation outside the box.

Right now, he was already trying her best not to pounce her wife with lots of questions, and he won't get inside their bedroom if he can't convince himself to fully drop the matter for good.

Because once he started asking her questions, he won't stop digging unless he will get to the bottom of it.

Upsetting his wife with his questions might lead to their separation, and he feared that what will exactly happen to them if he keeps pressing her for an answer to all his questions, although he has every right to ask her the truth he dare not go ahead with it.

Dammit!

He was having a painful headache just thinking about it!

He went to the cupboard and produced a bottle of wine and a glass. He needs to drink some wine tonight to help him sleep quickly. The moment his back hits the bed, he wants to sleep right away so that he won't be tempted to ask his wife.

He poured the wine into the glass and began drinking solo.

Once his mind is numb and he can't think straight then that will be the time to retire into the bedroom and sleep beside his beloved liar wife!

Tiny voices are screaming inside his head.

What are the secrets that her wife was hiding from him?

The truth is...half of his subconscious is afraid to know the truth...he might not like what he will discover.

Maybe the saying is right... 'What you don't know won't hurt you.'

So it's better not to know!

Sighing...Mike fixed his stare on the view outside trying to focus on the beautiful view and not on the turmoil raging in his mind.

Right now he was trying to hold on to the happiness that he felt after knowing the DNA result. He can't ruin this second chance of happiness after his wife return again.

But dammit, he wants to ask why she lied to him about those gadgets?

Her lies creating negative suspicion in his mind.

Ugh! He groaned in despair.

He sipped his second glass of wine.

The...another glass.

One hour later.

Mike is already drunk and left the pool area, going to the master's bedroom. When he entered the room, he saw his wife already sleeping in the bed, she seemed to be snoring softly.

Good! He will sleep quickly too.

He turned off the light and lie down on the bed beside his wife. He wrapped his arms around her waist and planted a kiss on the skin of her back. He closed his eyes to sleep.

A few minutes later, Mike was already snoring softly.

Caroline opened her eyes the moment she had known that her husband was already sleeping soundly. She can smell the wine from his breathing, he was drinking? But why?

Was it because he was not able to confront her about the gadgets he'd seen in her bedroom?

Maybe he was also suffering from internal conflict just like her.

She released a deep sigh.

Her heart was breaking because she knows that her husband was undergoing confusion in his mind regarding what he saw in her bedroom.

But she was also thankful that he prefers not to ask her directly or else she doesn't know what to say to him if he starts asking the question.

Due to frustration, she feels like she wanted to cry. She pities her husband.

She felt furious with herself because of her carelessness, with just one single mistake, they were both suffering right now.

It's like a silent crack on the wall that starts tearing them apart inside.

What will tomorrow bring?

She's afraid to wake up tomorrow and discover that her husband is starting to give him a cold shoulder.

Sigh, so much for trying to believe that her married life will return to normal once she's back in her husband's side.

So much of believing that she can finally enjoy bliss, peace, and quiet now that Allison was finally buried ten feet below the ground.

She feels like the shadow of her past is slowly catching up to her again, and it's like a ghost that's finding its way to the surface and trying to destroy the peace and happiness that she enjoyed nowadays.

The whole day tomorrow, if her husband won't ask her about those gadgets, then she can safely say to herself that her husband is willing to let go of that particular issue and she would stop worrying about it.

She's afraid that if she keeps entertaining such negative thoughts, she will go crazy and it will affect the health of her baby inside her tummy.

She put her hands on her tummy and caresses it lovingly. For the sake of her baby, she hopes her husband won't inquire about those gadgets.

She closed her eyes again wishing for a quick sleep.
