Chapter 73 - Your Husband Got Beaten Up 1

The traffic police department seemed extraordinarily lively that night.

Song Chuyi was seated giddily on a chair.

In the restless room, a burly man was still wildly drunk. A few traffic policemen surrounded him but were tackled.

“Who are you things. How dare you catch me, do you know who I am? Even the Chief Police of this Northern City has to be respectful when he sees me,” the drunkard shouted abusively without even being able to distinguish between the different directions.

Song Chuyi’s temples throbbed. At that moment, he just wanted to find a bed and sleep for a while. The thing that he was worst at in his life was drinking, yet he got drunk twice in just a short period of half a month.

The worst part was, after getting to the station, he didn’t have his phone and he didn’t remember any numbers. Could it be that he would have to stay the night here?

“Song Chuyi, is it? According to the 11th rule of the Traffic Safety Law, those who drive drunk will have their license revoked. We will also have to pursue the criminal offence according to the law and you cannot obtain another license within the next five years,” a Police Leader said, looking down at him. “Tonight, the lot of you better stay here nicely. When you’re sober tomorrow, those who have to be detained will be detained, and those who have to pay fines, pay your fine.”

Song Chuyi’s face changed. He said, “Can I give my family a call? If I don’t go back today, they might be worried.”

“You know your family would be worried, yet you still dared to drive drunk,” the Police Leader scoffed, throwing the landline over.

Song Chuyi dialed his phone number, but no one picked up.

He tried calling Song Chulang’s number but ended up dialing the wrong number.

In this generation in which smartphones were tied to people’s lives, people’s brains would no longer waste time remembering numbers.

He only hoped Zhan Mingwei found his phone in the manor.

11 o’clock at night, Changqing walked out after a comfortable bath. Everyone was sharing this drunk-driving incident in Northern City on her Feed [1. On Weibo (Chinese Social Networking Site)].

After a moment’s pondering, she took a selfie and uploaded it on Weibo and commented: Today there’s been a drunk-driving investigation. Luckily, yours truly didn’t drink…

After it was uploaded onto Weibo, many internet users started to like and leave positive comments.

Changqing sat on the couch, laughing secretly with her hand over her mouth.

Robben jumped onto the couch and licked her face. Changqing held him in her arms and touched his nose briefly, saying, “Do you think I’m thick-skinned and shameless? Let me tell you—there are no celebrities who aren’t shameless. If you’re not a shameless celebrity, you’re not a good celebrity… Aiya, it’s already so late. Why isn’t your boss back yet?”

Robben waved his tail, enjoying his time in her embrace coquettishly.

“You’re so ungrateful. Your boss isn’t back yet, but you’re not even worried.” Changqing pondered and gave Song Chuyi a call worriedly. No one picked up.

Maybe he was still busy at the traffic police station. It took time to even look for your connections.

However, she reckoned she wouldn’t be able to sleep without seeing Song Chuyi back home. Therefore, she started surfing the web to look for the consequences of driving drunk. The more she surfed, the more afraid she became.

This would require detention and a fine!

Song Chuyi was such a great man. Luckily, she wasn’t the one caught.

She patted her chest as she continued to call Song Chuyi.

In a car, Zhan Mingwei leaned back on the leather seats at the back of the car, half-asleep. The phone rang a few times. He was so annoyed by the noise that he opened his eyes in frustration.

He picked up the phone beside him. Two words “Yan Chunchun [1. The Chinese word for ‘dumb’]” surfaced on the screen.

A laugh escaped him. For a moment, he wasn’t sleepy at all.

Who is this? Song Chuyi actually created such a contact.

He pressed the “pick up call” button and an anxious woman’s voice immediately disseminated through the speaker. “Song Chuchu, when are you coming back? Nothing happened to you, right?”

Song Chuchu?

Zhan Mingwei’s lips twitched. This couple was quite interesting.

“What happened to Chuyi?”

“You’re not Song Chuyi?” Changqing only now realized the voice sounded different. “Then who are you?”

“Yan Changqing, you can’t even tell from my voice?” Zhan Mingwei cleared his throat. “Chuyi left his phone in the manor before he left tonight. This fellow gets careless when he’s drunk. Luckily, the service staff there passed his phone onto me.”

“… Chief… Chief Zhan.” Changqing was finally able to discern his voice, making her as scared as a student who jumped on her feet when she saw her teacher, not able to even talk properly.

“There’s no need to be so nervous.” Zhan Mingwei said in a gentle voice, “I know you and Chuyi are married. What did you say happened to him just now? Didn’t you two leave together?”

Changqing told Zhan Mingwei about the drunk-driving incident, mumbling anxiously, “He said he knew people and wouldn’t get into trouble, but he doesn’t even have his phone. How’s he going to contact anyone? Could he really be detained?”

“Don’t worry. I’ll ask around the traffic police department. I’ll make sure he gets home tonight.” Zhan Mingwei comforted her.

“Then Chief Zhan, I’ll leave it to you. Song Chuchu was only caught because of me.” Changqing couldn’t feel worse.

Over on his side, after Zhan Mingwei hung up, he called someone he was familiar with in the traffic police department and after asking around, he found out there was someone called Song Chuyi who was being detained that night.

When he rushed over, it was already midnight. On top of that, he had to find people to handle the procedures and by the time he saw Song Chuyi. it was already one in the morning.

There were seven to eight drunk drivers locked together and Song Chuyi was sitting in the innermost corner. His suit jacket was already laid on the floor for him to sit on. His light blue tie was also hanging crookedly, his white shirt was stained, his short, black hair was also slightly messy, his eyes were lightly shut, and his refined and handsome face was filled with frustration.

The drunkards around him snored loudly like thunder successively.

When Zhan Mingwei walked over, he really couldn’t hold it in and burst into laughter. “Way to go, Song Chuchu. I never thought there would be a day when you could fail so miserably.”

“Who did you call…” Song Chuyi’s face darkened and he stood up. He swore if he had stayed there the entire night, he would be driven crazy by the snoring as loud as motorcycles.

“Aye, your husband and wife relationship is a little interesting—one Song Chuchu and one Yan Chunchun. Why do I suddenly feel that you two were a match made in heaven?” Zhan Mingwei threw his phone to him, suppressing his laughter and said, “Yan Changqing gave me a call just now. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have known you were here. Aye, I say, is there something wrong with you? You didn’t even bring your phone, yet you wanted to save the damsel in distress. What a pretence.”

Song Chuyi couldn’t remain calm from his embarrassment. He stared coldly back and said, “Since I made her take me home, I should be partly responsible.”

“Just keep pretending,” Zhan Mingwei scoffed. “You don’t have to be detained and your licence doesn’t need to be revoked. I already paid the fine for you but you’re not allowed to drive in the next two months and you also have to do half a month of volunteer work at the hospital. Oh well, lately, the Northern City has been focused on dealing with drunk-driving and there were even reporters around tonight, so we still have to go through the motions.”

“Volunteer work?” Song Chuyi’s eyes darkened. “Are you kidding me?”

“Then would you rather be a traffic volunteer or sweep the floor as a sanitation worker?” Zhan Mingwei raised his brows.

Song Chuyi “…”

Zhan Mingwei patted his shoulder. “Isn’t it just volunteer work? Furthermore, it’s at Bo Han Hospital, the Song family’s hospital. To you, it should be a piece of cake.”

Song Chuyi was fearful. All the more that was embarrassing.

After signing the papers, the Leader saw them out of the traffic police station personally.

When they got in the car, Song Chuyi closed his eyes to rest. He was really exhausted after this incident.

Zhan Mingwei, on the other hand, was scrolling through Weibo in high spirits. While he was scrolling, he suddenly laughed out loud.

“You’re crazy.” Song Chuyi was in an extremely bad mood.

“Aye, look at your wife’s Weibo.” Zhan Mingwei held his phone in front of him.

On the screen was a picture of Yan Changqing’s selfie with a bun, completely without makeup. Her skin was tender, just like that of a newborn and her features were gorgeous, but when he saw the caption, his brows couldn’t help but twitch.

Luckily yours truly didn’t drink…

Could she be more shameless?

“Your wife is really cheerful.” Zhan Mingwei was delighted. “Interesting, really interesting.”

“Interesting your head. Why do you have her Weibo?” Song Chuyi frowned.

“As the chief of the broadcasting station, I have all the Weibo accounts of the hosts at my station.” Zhan Mingwei smiled.

“Sign up for me too.” Song Chuyi threw his phone at Zhan Mingwei.

“Yo, don’t you usually stay away from this and look down on our apps? Why do you suddenly want to sign up for an account?” Zhan Mingwei raised his brows and teased.

“I have a use for it.” Song Chuyi snorted.

Zhan Mingwei downloaded Weibo onto his phone and quickly signed up for an account with the username “delicate and beautiful [1. Translated from Chu Chu Dong Ren, a wordplay with Song Chuchu]”.

After Song Chuyi signed in, he said furiously, “Zhan Mingwei, are you sick? Change it.”

“The name can’t be changed once you set it.” Zhan Mingwei shrugged. “Why don’t you sign up for one yourself?”

Song Chuyi snorted again. He couldn’t do anything about it, so after he casually added a few people, he went to Yan Changqing’s latest Weibo post and commented: “Thick-skinned and shameless.”

It was almost two in the morning when Song Chuyi opened the house door. The house was brightly-lit.

On the couch, a person and a dog were sleeping quite soundly.

He closed the door gently. Robben raised his head from Changqing’s bosom.

Song Chuyi changed his shoes and walked over, beckoning Robben.

Robben whimpered and left Changqing’s embrace obediently.

Changqing flipped over drowsily. More than half her shoulder was exposed and her face under the warm light was silent and amorous.

Song Chuyi stood by the couch and watched for a while. He lifted her up from the couch.

“Song Chuchu…” her pink lips mumbled, her thin lashes trembled and she grazed his chest with her face…

He was astounded. His gloomy gaze turned gentle unnoticeably.

The curtains weren’t drawn and at 8 o’clock the next morning, Changqing was woken up by the piercing rays of the sun.

She stretched lazily and sat up, only to suddenly realize she was in bed. She remembered she somehow fell asleep on the couch while waiting for him.

Could it be that Song Chuchu returned and carried her in?

She lowered her head and realized she was even covered with a blanket.

An unknown emotion rose from within Changqing. After spacing out for a while, she dashed out immediately.

Auntie Wang was making breakfast in the kitchen. The door of the master bedroom was shut tightly.

Changqing heaved a sigh of relief. It looked like Song Chuyi came back.

The moment she thought of how he helped her last night, Changqing walked to the kitchen door. “Auntie Wang, are you frying eggs? Please teach me; let me fry this egg.”

Auntie Wang smiled. “Do you want to make breakfast for Dr. Song?”

Changqing rubbed her palms shyly. “Not exactly. I also want to learn.”

“Alright, I’ll teach you.” Auntie Wang nodded.

Growing up, the number of times Changqing had touched a pan could be counted with one hand. She followed Auntie Wang’s instructions and cracked an egg into the pan. It started off well, but after that, the oil somehow splattered and splashed onto her wrist…

Song Chuyi had just come out after washing up when he heard a cry from the kitchen.

“What’s wrong?” He went over quickly. Changqing was holding onto her hand. Her eyes, nose, and lips were all scrunched up together in pain. That look of hers was extremely pitiable.

“Changqing said she wanted to fry an egg for Dr. Song but ended up getting splashed by the oil accidentally,” Auntie Wang quickly explained.

Song Chuyi was dumbfounded. Changqing lowered her head silently.

Oh dear, Song Chuchu will definitely think I’m too useless.

“Let me take a look,” His clear voice came from above her head.

He took her hand gently. Changqing lifted her head. It was nice to see that handsome face lowered.

He blew on the red area on the wrist.

She held her breath. She felt as though there was a limp and numb sensation on her skin.

“Follow me.” He held her hand and led her to the bathroom, squeezed some toothpaste out and gently rubbed it on her wound.

A cooling sensation spread on her skin. Changqing no longer felt so much pain and her tightly-knitted brows relaxed a little. Only, why was her face so hot? The Song Chuchu who applied toothpaste on her just now was really gentle.

“Don’t touch the oil pan in future.” Seeing her pitiable look, Song Chuyi couldn’t help but reprimand her.

“I just wanted to make you some fried eggs to thank you for your help yesterday.” Changqing was embarrassed. “When did you return yesterday? I called your phone yesterday and realized you left your phone with Chief Zhan. Was it Chief Zhan who helped you after that?”

Her eyes were clear but that made Song Chuyi feel weirdly awkward. If not for Zhan Mingwei last night, he might’ve really had to stay overnight.

However, he wouldn’t mention such an embarrassing event. “Without my phone, I could still remember my friend’s number. Don’t overthink it; yesterday’s matter has been resolved.”

“Really? It said on the internet that there’s detention, revoking of licence and a fine.” Changqing revealed a face full of worship, flattering him with all her might. “Song Chuchu, you have such a robust backing.”

Song Chuyi’s face seemed a little unnatural. “I don’t have to be detained or have my licence revoked, but I have to do some volunteer work at the hospital for half a month and I can’t drive for two months.”

“… I see.” Changqing scratched the back of her head, feeling guilty. She said weakly, “Then I’ll drive you to the hospital to work later.”

“Sure.” Song Chuyi nodded.

Outside, Auntie Wang reminded them that breakfast was ready.

The past few days, Changqing had been staying at Ruan Yang’s and never had a proper breakfast. Today, Auntie Wang made her favorite western toast.

Changqing ate it quickly and had three in a row.

“You like sweet food?” Song Chuyi glanced at her and noticed.

“Mm.” Changqing nodded her head hard. While she was eating, she suddenly remembered something. “Well… last night, I said I would move out, but I’ll be a little busy these next two days. The day after tomorrow, I’ll have to prepare for the shoot. I’ll move out after the shoot…”

“Where are you shooting?” Song Chuyi asked as he placed the glass of milk down.

“The vineyard over at De Qin Monastery, not far away from Northern City.”

Song Chuyi raised his brows. “You’re filming a country love story?”

“No.” Changqing shook her head and explained, “It’s an urban love story alright. We’re just using a location from there; the scenery there is good.”

“I see…” Song Chuyi didn’t say anymore.

Thus, Changqing started to eat her breakfast and scroll her Weibo. When she saw “delicate and beautiful”‘s comment, she was a little guilty and a little angry.

“What are you doing?” Song Chuyi asked.

“Looking at Weibo,” Changqing mumbled, “People nowadays really don’t say nice things; they keep scolding people.”

Song Chuyi suddenly thought of his comment on that Weibo post.

After the meal, Song Chuyi was prepared to go to work but Changqing had yet to change.

“Could you hurry up?” Song Chuyi saw they were almost late and was anxious. “Aren’t you just changing clothes? You’ve been choosing for 10 minutes.”

“I’m a known person, so my daily outfit is very important, alright? If I don’t dress well, those reporters would say I’m old-fashioned.” Changqing held onto a few sets of clothes and was in a dilemma. Finally, she had no choice but to let Song Chuyi choose. “Which outfit do you think looks better on me?”

“This.” Song Chuyi’s patience was running out. He pointed to one casually.

Changqing came out after changing and he suddenly lost all ability to speak.

The outfit he picked casually just now was an off-shoulder dress. After she put it on, her fair and delicate shoulders were exposed. Her jet black hair hung loosely on her shoulders, giving off a sense of a lady’s suppressed desire.

The reason why it was suppressed desire was mainly because… Changqing’s chest was too perky and her face was too alluring.

Song Chuyi let out a gentle cough and turned away.

In the car, Changqing realised her dress wasn’t a wise choice.

This dress was a gift from Ruan Yang. At that time, Ruan Yang said that in this dress, one had to be lady-like from head to toe. This was an elegant dress.

However, she never thought it would be so elegant that it wouldn’t be good to drive in. Every time she turned the steering wheel, her collar at her shoulder rode up. This looked bad, especially when she had a man sitting next to her. Changqing couldn’t resist the urge to pull her dress down.

“Hey, can you not meddle with your dress when you’re driving?” Song Chuyi, who felt the car swaying, was holding tightly onto the handle overhead. “There are cars everywhere. Can you concentrate?”

“It’s all your fault for making me wear this dress. Look, it keeps riding up,” Changqing pouted and grumbled awkwardly.

“So be it.”

Changqing’s lips squirmed and she spat out two words: “Not pretty.”

“… Alright, I’ll pull your dress for you while you concentrate on driving.” Song Chuyi felt deeply helpless. He reached over to pull the off-shoulder collar down her arm, revealing her shoulder that was as white as milk. His deep-set eyes darkened.

A jeep overtook them from behind and saw the scene in the car. The driver scolded them furiously: “Hey, if you guys want to do it, do it at home. Don’t block the path of others early in the morning. Otherwise, just go to the side and do it.”

Changqing blanked out for a while and when she understood his words, a surge of raging fire rose from her toes to the top of her head. She was embarrassed and angry at the same time. “That man was… too unrefined, what he was saying.”
