Last Letter

“Marie. Is dinner ready?”

“Brother… I’ve said this many times, but I am not your personal maid.”

Despite saying that, I place freshly baked bread on the table near my brother, Stanley.

Although this daily routine is reminiscent of the time I spent in the Edigma territory, unfortunately, the location is my brother’s small residence.

The palace was thrown into turmoil as a result of the king’s sudden abdication and the subsequent punishment of the king’s loyal vassals.

Although there was initial unrest within the royal palace, the effective strategies employed by the anti-royalist faction, coupled with Prince Risel’s public address and the public disclosure of the former king’s apology letter, helped to minimize the extent of the turmoil.

However, due to Prince Risel’s sudden accession, the preparations for the coronation ceremony had to be hastily organized, causing a great deal of commotion within the palace.

Reynaldo, the mastermind behind the coup, is said to have been thrust into the role of the next chancellor by the surrounding nobles, to support King Risel. Without any time to object, he is now overwhelmed with work in the royal palace.

Reynaldo had expressed his desire to return to the Rose territory with me. However, Alberto quickly dismissed those ideas without any hesitation.

As the Knight Commander, Alberto was also occupied with numerous duties and responsibilities.

In addition to restructuring the country’s system, the domestic turmoil necessitated enhanced vigilance toward neighboring countries. It was crucial to strengthen security measures before any problems arose, taking advantage of the chaos.

Furthermore, there were members of the Knights’ Corps who belonged to the anti-royalist faction. Some of the knight members who were sons of anti-royalist supporters were put on temporary standby, resulting in a general shortage of personnel.

Given the hectic circumstances in both the palace and the knight order, I informed Reynaldo that the revision of Rosemary’s charges could be postponed. He seemed very dissatisfied, but from my perspective, there was no urgent need for it, and I didn’t want to burden him with additional work amidst the chaos.

I’ve taken a temporary break until everything is over, so I occasionally help Alberto with his paperwork, feeling somewhat guilty for having nothing to do.

Alberto, with fatigue evident from the dark circles under his eyes, lamented that he had to face paperwork tasks, which he was not good at.

Then, Alberto also told me, “I hope you can return to being a maid in the Knights’ Corps soon.”

However, this, too, was rejected by Reynaldo.

In truth, if there is no need for either option, I thought about returning to my territory, just like the young ladies who were being considered as prospective fiancées.

But I was eventually persuaded by the two, and in the end, I found myself taking refuge with my brother, Stanley, working in the palace alongside him.

The engagement situation, which was once the reason for my summons, was nullified, and everyone was instructed to go back.

Niki and I exchanged greetings as she was about to leave, and we promised to exchange letters with each other.

Also, she mentioned that when she returns, she wants to inform her parents about her marriage with her lover, so it’s possible that our next meeting might be a wedding.

I bid farewell to the carriage carrying Niki, who will likely become a bride before me, with anticipation for our reunion in the future.

While it’s true that I’ve taken a break from my duties as a maid and found myself with nothing to do, I never expected to become a maid in my brother’s mansion.

Compared to the high treatment I received up until now, the work was almost unpaid, but I was happy to be able to spend time in the royal capital.

Reynaldo and Alberto make time to come and visit me.

Initially, Stanley was timid due to the disparity in their positions, but as they continued to visit, he grew accustomed to it. Being naturally audacious, he has adopted an attitude of welcoming them into our home as if they were family friends.

Will my brother be able to manage himself in the royal palace?

I became concerned and inquired about it to both Reynaldo and Alberto, but the responses from both of them seemed to suggest that there shouldn’t be any issues.

Moreover, there are times when, for some reason, the two of them use honorific language toward my brother, so I made an effort to correct them earnestly.

Using honorific language towards my brother feels excessive. Even if they were to treat him disrespectfully, I wouldn’t mind.

And today, as well, the two of them said that they would come in the evening, so I made preparations for dinner.
