Chapter 161 The Past - Part ???

It wasn't even like I was surprised at this point. Someone like this can only hide in the shadows for so long. But then again, it takes one to know one.

An emotionless girl looked up towards me, from beside the dead bodies scattered around her. It was quite a gruesome sight, although one I've seen many many times before. She was one of us. Her eyes were cold and apathetic, truly the face of a killer.

"So you're from the facility as well."

She gradually pulled herself off the ground. Her uniform was tainted with the blood of those around her, her skirt was a vivid shade of red. It would've been quite a scary sight for any innocent onlooker. She didn't deny my accusation, not that it would've changed anything. It wouldn't take any outcome of the facility much time to see what had happened here.

"They attacked me first, anyways."

It was the loose sense of morality that all of us 'outcomes' of the facility share. We weren't made to be serial killers after all. Any outsider would've been shocked to the bone if they saw the eerie transformation from the cute happy-go-lucky girl to this cold-blooded psychopath, well, I wouldn't exactly call us psychopaths, more like, outcomes—cruel, misled, outcomes. The lifeless corpses which lay beneath us would be quite an annoyance. We were all perfect liars—we all had a persona on top of our broken inner selves.

"So what are you going to do now."

It wasn't fit for an outcome to get caught by the police. I assumed she already had a plan, as did we all, for every action has already been planned out in detail in our minds. Everything we've ever done in our entire lives has been under our control and our control only.

She pretended to do some innocent laugh whilst scratching her head.

"Oh, I don't know~"

I placed my hands in my pockets.

"I hope whatever you have in mind works out for you."

She smiled eerily.

"How kind of you, but you see, I'm just a cute na?ve girl who doesn't know what to do~"

"I'll see you on Monday."

"How mean~"

Her fa?ade was honestly quite impressive. Even I couldn't tell that she was an outcome until just a few moments ago. She managed to blend in pretty well as an innocent young girl.

"Aren't you going to give me a goodbye kiss?"

"Sorry, but I'm not really interested in lifeless killers."

A little giggle came out of her mouth.

"Alright, how about a pretty, na?ve girl?"

Her demeanour changed like the flick of a switch. There was no sign of bloodlust or hatred on her face, it was almost like she had become a completely different person, a smiling happy girl.

"Ah it's a bit unsettling, changing like that, don't you think?"

"Whatever do you mean~"

I had enough casual chit-chat for one day.

Every person from the facility has a mission. Although we can't really be controlled by the 'higher ups' most of us accept it, only for the purpose of holding onto our humanity. Even though we don't want to be serial killers, destroying the world, all of us hold the 'mission' we're given quite close to our hearts.

—It was like the only sign that we were still human.

Most of us only kill or even just use our abilities to the fullest when either our lives are threatened or if it would further us in completing our respective missions. We also had an unspoken rule to not interfere with each other.

It was the final class of the day and as usual, I sat at the very back, listening to the lesson. I did this just to fit in, to feel what it's like to act as a normal child. Most of us do this anyways, it's a mixture of keeping attention off ourselves so achieving our missions is easier and also a small intrinsic desire to experience a normal life. I obviously didn't need to listen to the class, I already knew all the content they taught and will ever teach and it wasn't even like I cared about test scores or anything of the like.

—I only cared about my mission, in the end.

In the past, outcomes would often try to find each other's missions. There was once an outcome whose mission was to kill all of us. Obviously, he failed, he was one of the weaker ones as well. Ever since then, the unspoken rule meant that us outcomes never really spoke or interacted with each other.

It was better that way. If a situation broke out where outcomes are fighting each other, that would cause massive collateral damage, interfering and ruining the lives of many.

Despite meeting another outcome, it didn't really change my daily life, I had seen her around from time to time. Even though we had some light small talk at the beach, neither of us felt the urge to speak to the other. We just went on as usual. She acted like the girl who was walking on the sand, cute, outgoing and sometimes bashful, but that was not the real her.

Eventually, the class came to a close. I put all my books, which I hadn't ever written in, into my bad and began making my way out. It was raining pretty heavily so all the students either had umbrellas or dashed towards the bus stops. I didn't have either so I decided to sit in the hallway for a little while, as I waited for the rain to die down. It wasn't like I was in any rush anyways.

After a few minutes, the school was almost completely empty. There weren't usually any extracurricular activities so students generally didn't have any reason to stay. I looked around, seeing if anything was happening, there was nothing out of the ordinary. The storm and the clouds made the school quite dark, the lights were turned off as well. The rain didn't look like it was dying down any time soon.

I stayed on a little bench by the entrance. Watching the droplets of rain sliding down the glass door. Suddenly, I heard some crashing sounds coming from above. It seemed there were still more people at school.

"—Help!"

I could hear a plea for help. I wasn't sure exactly why it was happening so I slowly got up and walked towards the stairs. I didn't really care that much but I decided to go check it out since I didn't have anything better to do. I could hear the thumping of frantic footsteps, it seemed that someone was running around. I made my way up the stairs, reaching the second floor.

There were several doors slung wide open, tables, chairs, and everything was scattered all across the hallway and rooms. The noise had died down for some reason, judging by the orientation and positioning of the equipment all over the ground, I figured that the person was likely in the room to my right.

I slowly walked inside, and as expected, there was a girl hiding behind a jumble of chairs and tables, looking fearfully at me. My entry came as a shock to her, her entire body jolted as I entered the room.

It was ???, cowering in pure anguish.

From what I could tell, it was likely that someone was chasing her.

"Please help me..."
