Chapter 90 - The Jade Bracelet (6/6)

"Didn't I say that this story is not about me?" Feng Huan immediately denied his involvement in this tragic love story.

"R-right... My mistake." Xiong Jingfei's lips jerked, "Want me to help this friend of yours?"

"How?" Feng Huan's eyes held a tinge of distrust. Something was telling him to not hand over the bracelet to this woman.

"First, you must promise me that you won't get mad." Xiong Jingfei stated, reaching out her arms for the bracelet. "Second, I need that bracelet to help you- no, your friend."

"No!" Feng Huan declined. Removing the bracelet from her reach when her fingers were almost there. Those sticky fingers of hers were up to no good! "That makes you even more suspicious."

"Do I look like a suspicious person? Has my action ever caused you to question yourself?" Xiong Jingfei argued, dropping her arms in disappointment. So close!

Feng Huan's eyes spoke for himself. Yes, he lost count questioning his decisions in helping her. She was already suspicious from the moment she popped down from the tree. He just never expected to meet her again, and turned out she was one of Xiong Jingfei's maid.

"Ah hah!" Xiong Jingfei shouted, pinning the lost in thought Feng Huan down and took the bracelet by force. Somehow there wasn't a satisfying feeling about taking it. The bracelet fell into her hands way too easy?

She looked down at the person lying underneath her. His eyes were wider than they were when she smacked him. There was something different about him... She laughed, getting herself off him. His body was stiff as a log, and his face was beet red.

"You are just like an innocent girl," Xiong Jingfei twirled the bracelet with her fingers.

Feng Huan regained his composure once Xiong Jingfei was no longer on top of him. He sat up and yelled, "Ill-mannered woman! Return my bracelet at once or else."

She titled her head a little and feign ignorance, "Oh? What are you going to do? I thought you said that this was your friend's bracelet?"

Feng Huan hurled his body at her, "It-It is! Give it back now."

One of the perks Xiong Jingfei learned from Feng Huan's training was that she was faster than him. Swiftly she dodged out of his way and ran with the bracelet. She turned around and waved the jaded white bracelet in her hand.

"Watch out!" Feng Huan shouted, picking up his pace to reach her in time.

Forgetting that she was running on rocks, she ended up going down with them. She closed her eyes and waited for the fall. Holding the bracelet near her chest to keep it safe. Then she felt an arm wrapped around her waist and flipped her around.

"Ouch!" Xiong Jingfei winced, her head hit against something heavy plated. Upon opening her eyes, she made sure to check the bracelet was still intake. She sighed in relief, thank goodness it was. Feng Huan would never forgive her for breaking it.

"How long do you plan to lay on top of me?" Feng Huan said gruntingly from underneath her.

She gasped, instantly standing up without realizing her hair ribbon was snagged by his armor. As she pulled away, her hair became undone as it fluttered down to her sides.

"I'm sorry! Are you okay?" Xiong Jingfei reached down to pull up Feng Huan but withdraw her hands. He laid there stunned, stiff, and unmoving. Does he have this problem every time a woman touches him?

She quickly explained her earlier actions, "I only wanted to take your mind off the owner of the bracelet, even if it was for a brief moment. I didn't mean to cause you any harm."

The night wind blew its way down the stream and attacked her in the process. Making her realize that her hair became undone. She patted her head, "Where did my ribbon go?"

The ribbon was still hanging on Feng Huan's armor. Reaching out to take it, but couldn't when Feng Huan backed away from her. She blinked, thinking he was probably furious with her childish actions.

Xiong Jingfei reverted herself back to being the Eldest Miss of the Xiong family. She changed her tone and took a slight bow to show her sincerity, "Again, I apologize for my childish behavior. I promise this won't happen again."

Against the cold night, her hair blew along with the wind as she took her bow. There, Feng Huan saw a new side of her. She no longer felt like a servant or child. He clutched his chest, there it was again. That thumping against his chest that died when Zhao Fan got married.

"Xiong Guang!" Xu Song's fierce voice broke Feng Huan's trance.

Both of them turned their attention towards the Xu Song marching towards them, angrily. She tried walking towards them in a calm manner, but she wasn't fooling either one of them. The sound of Xu Song's footsteps doesn't belong to someone with calmness.

"Xu Song? Did something happen?" Xiong Jingfei asked, feeling Xu Song calming down once she got closer to them.

"No, I was worried because you were taking too long to fetch General Feng." Xu Song gave them a false smile. She stared at Feng Huan, "Everything stayed the same as always."

She didn't wait for Xiong Jingfei or Feng Huan to say anything else. Xu Song grabbed Xiong Jingfei's hand and pulled her to follow her back.

In Xiong Jingfei's other hand, she still onto Feng Huan's bracelet. She kept walking with Xu Song without turning back. And Feng Huan did not stop her or asked for the bracelet again.

He watched as Xu Song dragged Xiong Jingfei away from him. If he wasn't wrong, those last words of Xu Song were meant for him. It was a word of warning for him to not have any feelings for Xiong Jingfei.

"Everything stayed the same as always," Feng Huan muttered those words back to himself. What did Xu Song think is going to happen between a mere servant and a general?
