93 Preparing New Spells (3)

Blake might have no single idea about the main element that the greenish demon used in its spells, but when it comes to darkness element runes, Blake could be said to be more than just proficient in them.

He had memorized and learned the use of so many darkness elemental runes that he even had some that were still sitting at the back of his mind and haven’t been used yet in any of his spells.

And the rune that he currently saw in the greenish demon’s spell was one of those runes that he knew but didn’t use in any of his spells.

Digging into his memory, Blake instantly recalled the rune’s use.

“It’s the rune to emphasize the darkness element in spells,” Blake muttered out loud as he double-checked whether the runes that he saw were the same as the ones in his memory.

After taking a good look at the rune for a solid 5 seconds, Blake was then sure that it was indeed the rune that he was thinking about.

“I thought that rune was used to make the darkness tendril more rigid by adding more darkness elements to it.”

“But now that I think of it, the darkness spike spell didn’t have that rune...”

Blake then recalled the fight with the five humanoid demons a few days ago and remembered how the greenish demon’s spell worked.

.....

The clips of the greenish demon drawing the runes, holding it, and the spell manifesting were then replayed in Blake’s mind.

He remembered how the ground beneath his feet would shake before roots, similar to his darkness tendrils coming out of the ground.

He would assume that the roots were a plant-type spell or something along those lines that were able to summon plant roots, but Blake wasn’t too sure about it as he also remembered that the plant roots that came out of the ground had an unnaturally dark color to them.

It wasn’t pitch black as his darkness tendrils, but Blake could say with confidence that he hadn’t seen any plant roots as dark as the roots that came from the greenish demon spell.

But when he finally saw the runes that were used to create the spell and recognized the darkness rune that was used in it, Blake then made the connection between the two and realized what happened in the greenish demon’s spell.

His earlier guess about the greenish demon’s main element being somewhere along the lines of a plant or nature-type element should be true and the reason why the roots had a darker color that he didn’t recognize in any plants that he knew was due to the darkness element rune.

Blake thought that the darkness element rune used in the greenish demon’s spell was a rune that was used to make a darkness element construct, such as his darkness tendril to be more rigid by condensing more darkness elements to said construct.

But in Blake’s case, he had never used the rune because it upsets the balance that was already in his spells, and he could use the darkness spikes spell and runes to make a rigid darkness tendril.

Hence why Blake thought that he didn’t have use for that certain rune and the knowledge of it just stood at the back of his mind.

But now that he had seen how the rune was used in other spells, it clicked to Blake’s mind how it could truly be used and showed its true potential.

Blake had only thought about using the rune in a darkness elemental spell. And his thought would be true that the rune would only gather more darkness elements to the already existing darkness spell, more often than not, upsetting the spell’s balance.

“Why did I never think about that before!” Blake scratched his head and violently ruffled his own hair.

Blake had never thought about putting the rune into another elemental spell.

It was a problem that he often found himself in with his brain.

Blake was certainly thankful and grateful for his photographic memory as it gives him an edge in studying, and being able to remember all dates, places, and even useless details that the teachers wouldn’t even remember was something that he could do with just seeing them once.

But sometimes, Blake couldn’t help but whine and thought about how he didn’t have 200 IQ to back up his photographic memory.

It was certainly not a rare case for him to have difficulties linking things with each other. And puzzles and riddles were not his strong suits.

He was often reminded of that fact when he was doing math and physics, but now that he was in the demon realm, Blake was once again reminded of his shortcomings by the greenish demon.

“It was a good choice to not underestimate the spells of the demons that still lost to me.” Blake nodded to himself.

“Preparing a spell beforehand so that I can cast it any time, and now finding out the use of a rune that I thought to be useless.”

“I’ve learned at least two new things about spell casting from the demons that spent at least 4 seconds drawing a very simple set of runes.”

“I should always do this if I encounter other demon mages...”

Blake realized his shortcomings. And he knew that it would be hard to suddenly have a creative and brilliant mind.

But now he knew one of the things that he could do to help overcome his shortcomings, and he would definitely not be lazy and do it to help improve himself even more.

Such as right now, now that he knew that the rune could be used to imbue another elemental spell with the darkness element, Blake began to experiment with it right away.

The only other element that he could use other than the darkness element was the earth element. So, of course, Blake decided to add the darkness rune to one of the simplest earth spells that he knew.

Blake then began drawing the original set of runes used to cast a simple earth spike.

And just like usual, Blake finished drawing in under a second as it was a very simple set of runes.

But after Blake finished drawing the runes, Blake didn’t stop moving his finger yet and added the darkness rune, and after the rune was added that Blake finally finished moving his finger.

Blake looked at the rune with eyes full of expectations as he kept his whole attention on the runes that were currently floating in front of him.

And in the next second, Blake finally saw the runes flashed.

But his expectation was suddenly taken down a notch as he didn’t see the runes disappearing after flashing, but instead, it shook for a solid second before crumbling down on itself.

His expectations might be lowered, but it didn’t mean that it was lost.

Even though the spell had failed to manifest, the behavior of the runes didn’t say that it was impossible.

Different from drawing a false set of runes that immediately crumbles and breaks the moment Blake tries to manifest a spell, the runes that he had just drawn stayed in the air for some time, and shook, before finally crumbling down.

That shaking the runes did before crumbling was the sign that made Blake’s hope still alive.

That shaking meant that the runes were not balanced yet.

It was simply not balanced, not impossible to manifest.

So with a newfound spirit to do another experiment and testing with his magic, Blake began fiercely drawing on the dirt ground beneath his feet, trying to find the balance that he needed to cast a darkness earth spike spell.
