Chapter 162 - She really wasn't taking it too hard (3)

Du Ruo walked around the island and finally chose a job to transport rocks.

A lot of new land had been opened up on the island. Someone had to level the ground, pick out the rocks, and carry those rocks down the mountain. These rocks were used to construct the stone perimeter around the island.

Du Ruo found the foreman, registered himself without any hesitation, and picked up the back basket for carrying the rocks.

While carrying the back basket, he muttered, "I've been eating too much lately and not getting enough exercise. If I don't start exercising more, I'm going to lose my six-pack abs."

Lu Xingchi pointedly looked at Du Ruo. "So you had them at one point?"

Looking as if he had been horribly insulted, Du Ruo retorted, "If I strip in a classroom, I could be used as a living specimen of muscles for students!"

Bei Nuan sincerely said, "If you strip in a classroom, you'll get arrested."

Lu Xingchi wasn't in a hurry to leave. He also took a back basket like the others.

Transporting stones didn't seem difficult. It was merely loading the stones into the back basket on the mountain, carrying them down the mountain, and then unloading it. The stones would get weighed, and the laborers would be paid based on weight. However, if laborers didn't work hard enough and failed to carry down at least ten full baskets of stones each day, they wouldn't get paid for the day's work.

Bei Nuan thought it over and felt that she was competent enough. She went to the foreman to register.

The foreman was stunned when he saw Bei Nuan's face. "You're so beautiful. Why would you want to carry stones? I'll find an open way for you to earn money…"

Bei Nuan quietly waited for him to say the words that would get him beaten up. She had seen Lu Xingchi narrowing his eyes.

To her surprise, the foreman ended that sentence with, "... You can go to the casino. Without skills, you can't be a dealer at the tables, but you can start off being a waitress that serves wine and sweeps the floor."

The foreman looked over Bei Nuan's petite figure and said with regret, "They like to hire the mature and alluring type, but the lighting is dim there. You can get by by wearing heavy makeup."

Bei Nuan: "..."

"I don't like casinos. I just especially like to carry stones." Bei Nuan took the pen to register.

Beside her, Du Ruo happily interjected, "Really? Then we have the same interest!"

The foreman had no confidence in Bei Nuan. He turned around and specially chose a smaller back basket for her.  And then, he saw her tag, which had slipped out of her shirt when she leaned over to write. The big F on the tag was very conspicuous.

The foreman was startled when he saw the tag. There was pity in his eyes as he looked over Bei Nuan again. "Such a beautiful girl… What a pity."

He turned around again, picked up back baskets, and seriously compared them. He found the smallest one and replaced that one with the one that Bei Nuan was holding.

He didn't forget to exhort, "Don't put too many stones in it at once. The mountain path is difficult to walk. It's easy to fall. If you fall, your small, thin neck will break."

He thought it over and added, "Don't walk through the grass. The grass is tall, and there might be venomous snakes hidden in them. If you get bitten, you definitely won't make it to tonight."

"Someone will come over to deliver food at noon. Eat slowly. Don't talk while eating. Be careful of choking. Dying from choking is unpleasant."

"Oh, and," he suddenly added, "absolutely don't quarrel with anyone. If you're wronged, just bear with it. Your little head can't take it if someone punches you."

He voiced all sorts of ways that she could die as he imagined each new scenario.

Bei Nuan agreed and left with the back basket, planning on going to load stones.

The foreman stopped contemplating new ways she could die. After a pause, as if he was comforting a terminally ill person, he said, "Life and death are ruled by fate. D-Don't take it too hard!"

Bei Nuan: "..."

She really wasn't taking it too hard.
