Chapter 160 - She really wasn't taking it too hard (1)

The girl selling barbequed sparrows was called Little Shao, and she surprisingly had a B tag.

Since she had a rare B tag, she dared to do something that many people on the island didn't dare to do; go up the mountain to catch birds.

In the big mountain range on the island, the biggest mountain was a stone mountain. There were a lot of sparrows that made their nests on that mountain, and those birds tasted and smelled delicious after being barbecued. On this island where meat was scarce, these barbecued sparrows were a delicacy.

However, these sparrows built their nests on precariously high, steep, and slippery cliffs. A moment of carelessness while climbing and one would fall off the cliff. There were stones everywhere; breaking one's arms and legs would be considered getting off lightly.

Furthermore, there were highly poisonous snakes on the mountain. People would die immediately after getting bitten. Many people had already died on this island while trying to get a bite of these sparrows.

Thus, although they didn't have any delicious food to eat, few people were willing to go up the mountain to catch these sparrows. They would rather do tiring work and receive wages.

Other people didn't dare, but Little Shao dared. She went up the mountain to catch sparrows every day. Having a B card really was different. Nothing bad had happened to her.

Little Shao was a child. She couldn't earn much money by doing hard labor. The money she earned from selling barbequed sparrows wasn't less than a normal laborer's daily wage. At the very least, she didn't have to worry about starving to death.

The people on the island already had a superstitious belief about the tags. Although Little Shao was young, most people wouldn leave her alone because of her B tag.

After chatting with Bei Nuan for a long time, Little Shao finally asked her, "Big Sis, do you want to buy barbecued sparrows?"

Embarrassed, Bei Nuan replied, "I don't have any money."

It had been mentioned in the novel that the people on the island used the same currency as before the apocalypse. Bei Nuan really didn't have that currency.

Little Shao generously said, "That's okay. I'll give you one for free. Come back to buy them when you have money."

Little Shao chose the largest sparrow from the pile of sparrows that hadn't been skewered yet, took out a small metal can with holes from the side, sprinkled the seasoning on the sparrow, wrapped it up in a big, glossy, dark green leaf, and offered it to Bei Nuan.

It felt like she was doing this out of sympathy for an F that would certainly die soon. The girl had kind intentions, so Bei Nuan quickly accepted the sparrow.

Immediately after, a person came over.

Most people on the island were malnourished and were sickly in appearance. Their clothes hadn't gotten to the point of being ragged, but they weren't very good either. However, the person who had come over didn't look like he was lacking in nutrition from his shiny face. He was quite fat too.

He looked to be in his 40's or 50's. He had a big belly and was wearing a big floral shirt.

As soon as Little Shao saw him, she immediately chose the skewer with the fattest and biggest sparrow, sprinkled seasoning, and offered the skewer with both hands.

"Uncle Shi, would you like a sparrow? I caught these last night. They're definitely fresh."

Uncle Shi accepted the sparrow and grinned at Little Shao. "Little Shao, your barbecued sparrows are delicious."

"Then have another one." Little Shao offered him another skewer.

Satisfied and holding a skewer in each hand, Uncle Shi was about to leave when he suddenly shifted his attention to Bei Nuan. He seemed to have only noticed her existence at the moment. His gaze fell on Bei Nuan's face.

Like many people, he was stunned for a moment when he saw Bei Nuan's pure and beautiful face. And then, he noticed the F tag on her chest.

"Little girl." Uncle Shi raised a skewer. "Want to eat a barbecued sparrow?"

Before Bei Nuan could answer, Lu Xingchi grabbed her backpack and pulled her behind him.

Uncle Shi was startled for a moment. He had to look up to see Lu Xingchi's face.

Lu Xingchi looked like a dangerous individual. Uncle Shi smiled at him and left with the barbequed sparrows without saying anything.

"Who is he?" Bei Nuan quietly asked Little Shao. "He didn't pay."

"I can't ask him for money," Little Shao lowered her voice to say, "Uncle Shi and the others aren't laborers. They're part of the regiment. It's not that they don't have enough food. They just like to eat this."

Bei Nuan understood. Uncle Shi was part of the gang of bandits. The laborers referred to the gang as a regiment. Even if he wanted to take all of the barbequed sparrows from this stall, Little Shao wouldn't dare to refuse.

The team left Little Shao's stall and continued walking down the street.
