Chapter 123 - Aren't I great? Want to be my girlfriend? (1)

What could make him so hesitant?

Fang Chen's eyes were full of pleading, but he felt too embarrassed about troubling them to speak. "Can you… Can you help us go to our parents' workplaces? I… I really want to find our parents."

Fang Ye interrupted his brother, "We have to cross half the city to get there. It's so far. There's zombies everywhere. It's too dangerous. Don't make such a heedless request."

Fang Chen pointed at Lu Xingchi. "Big Brother, that's because you don't know how powerful this guy is. He can definitely do it."

Crossing half the continent, much less crossing half the city, wasn't a problem for Lu Xingchi.

Bei Nuan thought; would this count as her fulfilling Fang Chen's wish though?

Lu Xingchi leaned over her, directed her face towards him, and said, "You're the one who wants to help them. Ask me for help."

Bei Nuan was somewhat speechless.

"How do you want me to ask you?"

Bei Nuan thought Lu Xingchi would take advantage of the situation by asking for a strawberry-flavor kiss or something similar.

However, Lu Xingchi only smiled and said, "Say something nice."

That was too easy. She could act out a whole play praising him without a problem.

Bei Nuan immediately changed her expression. Looking at him with bright, limpid eyes, she grabbed his arm and shook it back and forth.

"You're so very handsome, so very powerful, so very kind. Can you please help us?" Her voice was so soft that people would get goosebumps upon hearing it.

Jiang Fei raised his eyebrows. Tang Tang turned his head away, trying to hold back his smile. Du Ruo rolled his eyes.

However, Lu Xingchi quite liked her performance. With his lips quirked up, he nodded. "Okay."

They discussed it and decided that there wasn't a need for everyone to go. It was enough for Lu Xingchi to take Fang Chen to his parents' workplaces. Everyone else could stay here to wait.

However, Lu Xingchi insisted on taking Bei Nuan too. Having lost her once, he now tried his best to keep her within his sight.

The final result was that Lu Xingchi and Bei Nuan left with Fang Chen.

They went downstairs and went over the same wall as before to get onto the road. When Fang Chen's back was facing them as he got down from the wall, Bei Nuan took out the jeep.

When Lu Xingchi opened the jeep's door, Fang Chen asked in puzzlement, "Was this jeep always here? Wasn't this road empty?"

Bei Nuan calmly answered, "Of course. Our jeep was always parked here. You must have missed it. Right, Lu Xingchi?"

Lu Xingchi started the engine. "Mhm."

This led Fang Chen to seriously doubt his vision.

Fang Chen's mother worked at an airline ticket office. It was on the first floor of an office building.

From a distance, Bei Nuan could see that his mom's situation wasn't optimistic. The building had caught on fire. From the charred facade on the first floor, she could imagine that the building had been surrounded by fire and smoke at one point.

Fang Chen's little face paled.

"Let's get out to look." Lu Xingchi opened the jeep's door. "Tell me if you see your mom in the crowd."

The crowd he was referring to was the group of zombies who had heard the jeep's engine and were coming over.

Fang Chen's face turned even more pale.

He saw that the ticket office was burnt from floor to ceiling. There weren't any zombies or humans inside, only debris that was burnt beyond recognition.

Fang Chen sighed in relief. No news wasn't necessarily bad news.

***

Fang Chen's father worked at a bank. They would have to drive halfway across the city to reach the bank.

Lu Xingchi sped down the roads and neatly left the waves of zombies behind.

The bank was located on a side street. Lu Xingchi parked the jeep and cleared out the zombies before letting Bei Nuan and Fang Chen off the jeep.

The zombies had broken into the city during working hours. Perhaps, someone had locked the bank's doors in time to keep the zombies out, but there were already infected people inside. As a result, the bank's lobby had become full of zombies.

"Is your dad in there?" Lu Xingchi asked Fang Chen.

Fang Chen was about to cry, but he still bravely leaned on the glass and looked in.

"No!" He carefully looked over the bank before coming to that conclusion. A glimmer of hope flashed in his eyes. "Could he be in the bank vault?"

"Even if he is, he's probably already mutated," Lu Xingchi reminded him.

Lu Xingchi opened the doors, cleared the lobby of zombies, walked to the metal door by the teller windows, and put his hand on the bank vault's handle.

The door immediately opened.

Fang Chen was shocked into silence. A while later, he said, "My dad told me this door is especially sturdy. Even explosives might not be able to break it open."

Bei Nuan answered, "He's a professional veteran at unlocking doors. He's especially suitable for robbing banks."
