10 The Basics of Survival

Name:Welcome to Arcana Author:WhosDatDude
He woke up with a start. He wasn't too sure how much time had passed. Radley felt a bit of stiffness due to the strange way he slept. He stretched and made his way down the tree. He grabbed his lose axe head and used it on some young samplings in the area to make some twine.

He fixed his axe with it, being rather glad that the pack didn't make their way back. Another fight like that and he would probably die. He also needed water. How his water bottle survived all that was beyond him. He examined the carcasses. It seemed they still contained a fair amount of heat, which was good. That meant he must have been asleep for a short period. He needed to skin them so he could use the skin. He needed some protection and his axe was barely able to punch their skin, which meant that they could be used as protection in some form or another. The problem was he didn't know how to skin or butcher, for that matter, "Diff, is there some kind of teaching database in there to skin an animal and perhaps how to…preserve the skin?"

"Affirmative."

"Could you show me how?"

"Negative."

He sighed in frustration. The system can be useful, but sometimes also a real pain in the ass.

"How do I…how do I put this, unlock it?"

"An achievement is required."

"And what is this achievement?"

"Basic crafting."

Radley brought up a list of achievements and looked at the basic crafting achievement. It required a hammer, an odd requirement.

"Diff, can you set up a method to craft a simple hammer?"

"Yes, does the user want to make this a priority over the main quest?"

"It won't affect the main quest?"

"Negative. Telemetry will be set up so that user can craft a rudimentary hammer, but it will not show the main quest until the user reinitialized the main quest."

"Okay, then set the new conditions."

"Implementing."

A new arrow showed up in Radley's line of sight. He followed it to collect the necessary items to create the axe. The odd thing is that it showed him back to the exact same material he used for the axe.

It set off about crafting the hammer. This time it went a whole lot faster. Probably due to the shape of the tool. So why did he need to craft a hammer so that he could skin an animal? Made no sense.

When he finished an unexpected popup occurred. Achievement: My first tool. Minor crafting unlocked.

The tab that had a bunch of question marks on them revealed itself to be minor crafting. When he opened the tabs there was a massive list of items that still seemed to be locked, but at least skinning and preservation were among the unlocked.

After an arduous struggle, he was finally able to get the first piece of skin of a beast. His nose twitched due to the smell and he wasn't even in the gory bits yes. He sighed this was going to be a long day. It took him a few hours to get through the carcasses. He tied their feet and hanged them over a thick branch using vines. He remembered something about bleeding animals and he laid the skins out. The problem was he was starting to get hungry. He looked for some berry bushes only to find that they were toxic due to his ability. The trees didn't bear any fruits and he didn't want to leave the carcasses alone. He thought of strategy two. Fire, but he had no means to make fire. He remembered reading in a book about how the primitive people made fire using a bow. So, using twine he made especially thick. He went for a young sapling to make the bow. After this, he looked for some dry wood and kindling.

He twisted the twine around a stick which he ran to and throw. This turned out to be more arduous given the high humidity in the air. He was getting thirsty, but he didn't stop. He blew a few times and saw a bit of smoke coming from one of the holes.

He added it to the kindling and after a while, he was slowly started to get a fire. He quickly added twigs and the likes and finally added descent sized wood pieces, before he knew it he had a decent sized fire going. He used his axe to cut a piece of meat from one of the beasts and started to cook it using a stick. The `smell wafted into the air. It smelled so good for Radley, but he knew he had to be patient. It gave him an idea.

It was a rather gory idea but at least he would have some water. He waited till the meat was cooked and ruthlessly gorged into it. It was still a bit under-cooked but this didn't bother him too much.

After he ate he went to a rock and started digging at its base. He was hoping to find some water. He found the water quick enough. He went towards and started severing the head of a carcass. He removed the jaw and slowly scooped out the brains of the creature. It made him wretch a few times. Burned the inside after cleaning the skull with water. After he used the mud water to clean the skull as much as possible. He grabbed a large leaf and created a funnel. He used moss as a filter and scooped water with his hand as it poured into the skull. He then used it to boil the water. It took long but it turned out to work and he was boiling water. It wasn't much, but he smiled satisfactorily.
