Chapter 1230 The Standoff

When Robert took the papers from Charles' hand, he was really terrified.

Charles had already investigated the real Adam's disappearance. But Robert was having cold feet. He was afraid to face the truth.

"Charles, you know, we...we were good friends once. Can you just tell me where my little brother is? I don't want to read the papers," Robert said softly.

The words "good friends" broke Charles' heart. He still remembered the days when he and Robert had been extremely close with each other.

Robert had been a great friend to Charles back then. But a rift had come in between them because of Robert's younger brother, Adam. Additionally, Robert had once been head over heels in love with Linda. Those were the reasons why Charles hadn't treated Robert like a friend just now and had even said some harsh words to him. Now, after recalling the past, Charles felt sorry.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said those words," he said to Robert sincerely.

Linda was shocked by Charles' words. The relationship between these two men had been tense just moments ago, but now Charles had suddenly changed his attitude and even apologized to Robert.

This was especially surprising to Linda because she knew that Charles was a proud man and rarely made the first move.

'What happened to him?' Linda wondered.

"It's okay, you don't have to apologize. I just don't have the courage to read the papers.

Can you please tell me what happened to my younger brother?" Robert asked.

"I've investigated the matter, but I don't know where Adam is. I don't know whether he is dead or alive. What I do know is that someone is pretending to be him. I think that person is Vincent, because he and Adam disappeared at the same time. But I don't have enough evidence to confirm it," Charles replied.

"Vincent?

I've never heard this name before," Robert said with a dazed expression on his face.

"Yes, it's Vincent,"

Charles said as he took out one of the papers and handed it to Robert.

"He once said that he is the son of a housekeeper of the Xia Clan. According to the investigation report, he has some link with May. He might be a relative of your wife, Lisa," Charles added.

"What? What do you mean?" Robert looked at Charles, p

saw Lisa sitting on the sofa and staring at him plaintively.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

"Where did you go, Robert? I can smell alcohol on your breath! Why have you come back so late? Our son is sick, but you act like you don't even care about him.

You're not a good father!" Lisa complained.

"Are you serious? You said that I'm not a good father.

So can you teach me how to be a good father?" Robert asked calmly, looking into Lisa's eyes.

Now that he was standing in front of Lisa, he didn't feel drunk in the slightest.

He would never forget how cruel this woman had been. However, it was not the right time to confront her about the truth, so he tried his best to control his temper.

"Robert, what happened? Are you okay?" Lisa asked.

"Yeah, I'm better than okay. I'm great. But I'm a little tired, so I'm going to sleep.

Good night," Robert said, and then entered the bathroom to take a shower.

Lisa heard the splashing of water as she sunk into deep thought. How could she resolve the standoff between them? She wanted to put things back on track. Although she and Robert hadn't registered their marriage yet, she had already given birth to his baby. In her eyes, they were husband and wife. They could register for marriage at any time.

Moreover, she had gotten a phone call from Vincent today. He had told her that Robert's parents would not be a barrier to their marriage anymore. These words had calmed Lisa's mind, and she felt good about the future.
