For hundreds of thousands of years the demon race had been the protectors of Doha, due to their innate strength and their close ties to Ala, Doha World Guardian Spirit, this duty had naturally fallen to them.

When the Zartonesh first invaded Doha, by opening a dimensional rift, the demons were the first on the battlefield. The war was long and brutal, and hundreds of thousands of demons lost their lives protecting Doha and driving the Zartonesh back through their dimensional gate.

The demons were worshipped on Doha as heroes, but many demons had discovered that the war had changed them, due to years of killing the darkness in their souls had grown. At that time there were still many demonesses, so it wasn't really a problem, but ten thousand years after the first invasion, the dimensional gate opened again, and the Zartonesh poured into Doha.

Once again, the demons took up the mantle and protected Doha and drove the Zartonesh back. It was only at the start of the third invasion that the people of Doha came to realize that the dimensional rift that the Zartonesh had created couldn't be closed permanently and that it would open every ten thousand years.

Due to the number of demons killed in the prior two invasions, during the third invasion, the Zartonesh managed to infiltrate the demon realm, slaughtering hundreds of thousands of demons, mostly women and children.

It took the combined effort of all the races to drive the Zartonesh off Doha. Devastated by the loss of so many of their people, the demons withdrew to the demon realm to mourn.

And it was during this time, that the demons found out about the terrible dark secret hidden within them. With the dwindling number of females, more males were not finding their true-mates and they were turning into vile creatures — devils.

At first, the demons were confused and fearful about what was going on, as these devils bore a frightening resemblance to the Zartonesh. Thinking that the Zartonesh had found a new way to destroy the people of Doha, they called upon Ala for help.

It was then that they truly learned a terrible secret, the Zartonesh and the devils on Doha were the same, and devils weren't just limited to demons, if anyone from any of the races on Doha turned to the Dark Arts, the light in their soul would be destroyed and without the light they would turn into devils, and when their physical body was killed, their dark souls would be transferred to another dimension — Hell — where they were supposed to spend eternity.

But somehow the devils had found a way to rip open a rift between dimensions, a truly unnatural event, this rip had left a permanent scar between dimensions, that scar had become a doorway between the two dimensions, and the people of Doha called it Hell's Gate.

Ren's father Salroch was king of the demons at that time, and he blamed the other races on Doha for originally creating the Zartonesh. This led to quite a bit of infighting in between the races at the time.

Most of the races turned on the humans, who were known to be more susceptible to the Dark Arts,if Ala hasn't intervened humans would have been exterminated, but Ala prophesied that the only person who could close the dimensional rift would be a human.

While this prophecy saved the humans, the distrust caused by the knowledge of the origins of the Zartonesh broke the harmony between all of the races. Most of the different races retreated back to their own realms, closing them off, and leaving the three lower realms to the humans.

Salroch at this time became obsessed with saving the demon race. With his army backing him he stripped the demoness of all their rights, then gathering all the unmated females, he organized mass viewings. The demonesses would be forced to wear revealing clothing, chained to blocks in the market square and male demons were invited to view them to see if their potential mate was among the single demoness.

Mated demons found this whole practice disgusting, and many mated couples fled to the wilds to flee the madness taking hold of the demon race, quite a few of the young single males fled with them, as they too were horrified at how the demons were changing, and also to protect these couples as they believed these mated couples were their salvation, not Salroch's approach.

With these voices of reason gone, Salroch was able to quickly take control, and he became more extreme. As he was the leader of the demons he believed that he had the right to the first choice to any female that took his fancy, only after she wouldn't fall pregnant after a time, would these females then be "bestowed" upon his supporters as so-called "mates"

Out of the countless females, Salroch raped, only Ren's mother fell pregnant with him. By the time Ren was old enough to understand just what a tyrant his father was, and how evil his reign had become, nearly two-thirds of the demoness had died, mostly due to taking their own lives, while the remaining demonesses were slaughtered by the very men who were supposed to protect and love them.

Ren was still deeply buried in the nightmare memories from the past when the frantic knocking at his door brought him back to the present.

Taking a deep breath, he turned, stood up straight and with an emotionless face coldly called.
