Chapter 121 - I'll Catch You Next Time

"Blood is funny."

Qing Chen's eyebrows furrowed but said nothing. He took Feng Xuan by the shoulders and lifted her slightly. "Are you hurt?"

She sighed, losing the last of her laughs. "My leg, my head, and my hand."

Qing Chen's eyes flew to the parts she had mentioned and carefully lifted his wife in his arms. The gunshots had stopped by now and when the door burst open, it was Wuming, his face glowing and his lips were grinning. "Police are here."

Qing Chen nodded. "You better go."

"Yeah, I'll see both of you soon."

"Thanks, brother."

Wuming winked at him. "Don't mention it."

Just as Qing Chen was walking to the exit, he heard the sound of ambulance and about half a dozen police cars.

**

Detective An was sure they had them this time. His mind was split in two on how he was going to take the Qing's case. He knew there was something wrong with that family. Another part of him was entirely convinced they were innocent. That he was just trying to pin it on them just because they were rich and powerful.

Detective An had dragged his boss out of here because this was a big bust. The least they could do was catch the senator. But he wanted something more. He wanted to find dirt in the Qing family.

He was growing anxious with each and every passing second as they got closer and closer to the address. A sinking feeling started in his stomach, because he knew—that just like any other little evidence they had against Mr. Qing--it would lead to nothing.

If he were a real criminal, he would have men turn that place upside down in search of his wife. What was he doing right now? Were they still negotiating? What would they find when they get there?

But he needed no more wondering as they had already turned off-road, police lights flaring and sirens wailing.

**

A dozen negative emotions rose to the head of the detective. He cursed in his mind. Bodies of men were left sprawled in the ground, their throats cut or bodies dotted with bullets.

"Freeze! Don't move!" said the captain to the men in all black with their backs turned. "Drop your weapon."

"We're Secret Service! We're under the orders of Deputy Tang. Call him," said the one with both hands up in the air.

"What is he talking about?" he asked the detective who also had his gun out and was covered by the car door. He shrugged at him. "Who are you?"

"Agent Chu. Don't be surprised with the dead bodies. I have nine other agents with me," said the man and took off the gun slinging on his chest. He kicked it and raised his hand back up. "Mr. Qing is inside collecting his wife. Well, don't you have a deputy to call?"

The captain muttered something under his breath before quickly dialing the number that would help him reach the deputy. It was pointless, the detective thought. Of course the deputy were on the Qing's side. After the call was done, the captain instructed his men to stand down and find anyone who was alive.

But the detective knew they weren't going to find any bad men breathing. Agents, huh, his mind whispered. That was a quick call.

A few minutes later, Qing Chen strode out of the property, looking dirty and bloodstained. His small wife was in his arms, badly injured.

Once they were checking on her, the detective walked up to Qing Chen. "Why am I not surprised you're caught up in this again?"

The corner of Qing Chen's lips turned upwards. "I'm much surprised as you are. It seems like someone had been feeding the senator that our company had a property in Dong Yi. He was pretty insistent that I own up to the water pollution there. With this I think you'll be able to get your job back. I think you better look into that, Detective. Don't put the taxpayers' money in vain."

The detective sighed, backing down for the night. "I'll catch you next time, Mr. Qing."

Qing Chen grinned and walked away. "I highly doubt it."

**

Qing Chen had gotten into the ambulance with Feng Xuan. She had lost blood but it wasn't much that she would need a transfusion. Once they were in the emergency room, her leg was stitched up. Her head needed none but it was (yet again) covered with white gauze and her hand was bandaged.

A policeman came and took both of their statements. Feng Xuan recounted the last moments of the Senator's life while clutching her husband's hand tightly. It was the first time Qing Chen had heard it and he wished that the senator was still alive so he could kill him again.

Qing Chen had given a fixed story that would match the rest of his men and the rest of the agents that came with them that night. Feng Xuan refused to stay in the hospital after receiving her treatments.

Once they were on their way back to their house, she said, "Please call my father."

"He's already on his way there."

Feng Xuan nodded.

Qing Chen knew there was something different about her then. Ever since he had heard her laugh—he knew that wasn't his wife. But a small part of him clung that it was just the shock of having been kidnapped and having killed a man while defending herself.

He had gotten into this knowing that Feng Xuan was going to regain her memories one day and he had been insistent on it ever since. But now, he was not so sure. He was scared to lose her.

He let out a hand and Feng Xuan put hers in it, without looking away at the window. "Do you want to talk about what happened tonight?"

Feng Xuan sighed and whispered. "I honestly don't know what to feel… now that I remember everything."
