Chapter 29 - News of Death

I didn’t want to get out of bed while lying under the warm blanket, but I heard footsteps outside the door. It was Ravi. He hadn’t been home all night last night and only returned in the morning. I heard him gently turn the knob of my door. I buried my head in the blanket and pretended to be asleep.

Ravi came in quietly and sat beside my bed. I opened my eyes and saw Ravi looking at me with affection. His face slowly moved closer to mine and he kissed my forehead. I immediately reached out and hugged his neck. His upper body was on top of mine.

“So you were awake long ago.” Ravi’s nose was on mine.

“You didn’t come back all night, so I couldn’t sleep well.”

“1m sorry. There are some things I have to handle recently, so I will be spending a lot less time with you.”

This was the first time I had heard Ravi say sorry. As far as I knew, the boss of a Mafia was like a king who would never bow his head. They would only give orders, threaten people, punish people, and even take someone’s life without any hesitation. The man in front of me, the man I had been so afraid of,

said ‘sorry’ to me. It made me feel like he was no longer a cold-blooded demon.

“Lhave something to tell you.” Ravi brought his hand to the back of my neck and helped me sit up.

“What is it?”

“Your father passed away,” Ravi said seriously.

I looked into Ravi’s big blue eyes and I believed his words. My father wasn’t in good health. I had expected this day to come, but not so quickly. I didn’t feel any sadness. It was like hearing the news of a stranger’s death. There was no sadness in my heart. At the moment, I was only worried about my

mother’s situation. Once my father passed away, Raul would have no qualms. I wondered how he would treat my mother.

“Ravi, I think…”

“Lknow. I’ll arrange it. Your mother’s fine for the time being. They’re all preparing for your father’s funeral. There’s no other news for the time being.”

“Thanks, Ravi.” I rested my face on his shoulder and inhaled the faint musky scent on him.

“Be good and go to school. I’ll get someone to bring your mother here tomorrow.”

Ravi went back to his room, took a shower, and rushed out.

“Take good care of Irina.” He patted Daniel on the shoulder and left.

Daniel drove me to school. I sat in the back seat and read the email from Robert on my iPad. Daniel made a sudden turn. I lost my balance and my phone slipped to the ground.

“Hey, Daniel, is there a cop after you?” I said jokingly.

“Sit tight.” Daniel suddenly accelerated and drove onto another road.

I tuned back to look out the back window. There was an MPV that had been following us very closely. There were people in the driver and passenger seats, and there were probably people in the back. Daniel had been accelerating to shake them off, but they were in hot pursuit. The other party’s car hit the

back of our car, and Daniel almost lost control of our car. Fortunately, Daniel was skilled in driving and held the steering wheel tightly. Otherwise, we definitely would have died if the car flipped over.

I nervously gripped the safety handle above the car window as my mind raced. I suddenly remembered that I had left the oil painting I had bought two days ago in the trunk of Daniel’s car. I quickly unbuckled my seat belt, adjusted the backseat, and climbed into the trunk.

“What are you doing, Irina? It’s dangerous!” Daniel saw me in the rearview mirror.

“Tm helping you.”

I took a bottle of water from my bag and drank a few mouthfuls. Then I squeezed all kinds of paint into the bottle, closed the lid, and shook it frantically. Then I climbed back into the backseat.

“Hey, Daniel, Find a chance for me to finish them off with this.” I showed Daniel my masterpiece in the rearview mirror. Daniel smiled and took my hint.

He slowed the speed of the car a little and took the leftmost driveway so that the car behind him could catch up to us on the right rear. I opened the window and splashed a bottle of paint on the driver’s side windshield. The car instantly lost control due to vision obstruction and hit the curbside barricade.

“Haha, well done, Irina.” Daniel laughed heartily.

“We cooperated pretty well.” I laughed too. From the back window, I saw the people in the car get out of the car and make a call with a dejected look. “Who are they?” I was curious.

“I don’t know, but they’re definitely not good people.”

“Haha, strictly speaking, we’re not good people either.”

“Tm not a good person, but you’re a good girl, Irina.”

“Alright, bad guy, please send me to school.”

At that moment, a car rushed out from the sidewalk in front of us. There was a loud bang and the strong impact made me lose consciousness instantly..
