36 Always There For You

"I know life has been hard on you lately. But trust me, you can't go through it alone. You need support. That's why, I'll be always there for you whenever you need me." Aiden stated in his magnetic voice. His words made Emily calm down a bit. Her heart felt so warm inside, he really cared for her. Tears started rolling down her cheeks like tiny sparkling beads.

She rushed and pulled him into her embrace.

"Ah... I'm so sorry for giving you a hard time. I shouldn't have treated you this way. Please forgive me. I shouldn't have over reacted like this!" She mumbled weakly. "Oh, don't blame yourself, Emily. Linda is just like your sister. You two are basically inseparable. So, of course you'd be greatly upset over it. Isn't it?" Aiden comforted her. Emily looked up at him with her puppy-dog eyes, and nodded lightly.

His heart skipped a beat, as he could feel his face burn up. "Uhm.. You can.. Uh.. Let me go now." He pleaded meekly, rubbing the back of his head. "Oh, yes. sorry." Emily smiled as she let him go.

They then started walking towards their classes. As Emily felt better and cheered up, Aiden asked her about Ivy. "Why didn't you tell me that Ivy was pulling pranks on you. A girl like you would never just sit there and not do anything about it." Aiden asked carefully. Emily thought for a while, before speaking. "Well, to be honest I'm not sure either. But, I felt like I did not have the energy to deal with her. I was already mulling over my own problems."

"Ah, whatever, the more important thing is that you are now back to normal." Aiden joked around. Emily chuckled.

That day went really amazing for Emily. Aiden tried his best to cheer her up, making lame jokes and just being his usual weird, cheery self.

"Uhm... Aiden?" Emily asked while they were walking back home after college. "Yeah?" He replied, smiling. "Do you have any idea why Linda hasn't contacted any of us since she left? I'm really worried about her. Is she alright?" Emily questioned, as if he'd know the answer, but still, she just wanted to hear what he had to say in this regard.

"Oh..." Aiden nodded, as he tried to think of a reason, why this could be happening. "Actually, I'm pretty clueless. But all I do know, is that, she must be really busy. Isn't that an obvious factor?" He answered with a question of his own, raising his eyebrows. Emily sighed, "I guessed that. But... She hasn't called since days, almost 2 weeks! Isn't that something to be worried about?" Aiden nodded in agreement.

"How about we try to call her again today, at a suitable time, before going to bed? Maybe she'll pick up then?" Aiden suggested.

"All we can do is try." Emily shrugged.

Later that day, Aiden arrived at Emily's house in the evening. "Hey, Emily. How are you doing?" Aiden asked. "Hmm... Good." She replied nonchalantly, staring at her computer screen in front of her. "Have you texted her? Or maybe called her yet? Or anything else from her side?" He tried to ask, hoping for a positive feedback. "Nope... Nothing..." She answered pitifully.

He took off his jacket, placed it on her bed and stood behind her chair. Placing his hands on her shoulders, he consoled her, "It's okay, Emily. Relax." "Hmm..." She replied vaguely.

Just then, a miracle happened.

An incoming video call from Linda! Emily felt as if she was dreaming. Her brain stopped working, too shocked to even click the answer button. Fortunately, Aiden sprang into action, clicking it for her before it ended and lost her only chance of talking to her. After loading for a few moments, Linda's pretty and delicate face popped up at her screen.

All this while Emily's mouth was agape and she had been covering it with her hands. This is unreal, she kept thinking.

"EMILLYYYYY!!!!" Roared Linda from her end. "LIINDAAAAA" Emily screeched back.

This. Is. Gonna. Be. Crazy. Aiden thought helplessly.

"How dare you not pick up my calls and not answer my texts? Do you have any idea what I went through?! I thought you were dead!" Emily complained, her eyes welling up with tears. "Emily, don't say like that. I can really explain! You have to listen, it's a really really long story. I had been so stressed out lately, and also quite exhausted. I seriously did not expect my routine to be so damn hectic!" Linda grumbled. "Anyways, leave my story, it's not that special. For just a few more days, I'll be very busy, but after that I would have plenty of free time. I don't even have much time to talk right now. But I promise I'll keep texting you. Alright?"

Emily nodded her head sadly. Aiden just stood beside her awkwardly. After a few seconds Linda finally noticed him in the back. "Oh, hey Aiden! Sorry I didn't notice you earlier." "Eh, don't worry. It isn't a big deal." He answered coolly. "Just hope you're doing well."

"Kinda..." She said pursing her dainty lips. "What's wrong? Is everything alright?" Emily questioned in concern. "The thing is that-" Linda started to speak, but was cut halfway through as her door started to bang loudly. "Sorry guys, I've got to go. I'll keep in touch through text. Bye!" She spoke hurriedly and hung up the call.

"That was so not okay..." Aiden exclaimed in shock.
