In the opening part of the movie "Star Trek", Murphy complained that there was a ghost in her room when she was a child. As a result, she was ridiculed by Tom, and her father Cooper obviously didn't believe it. However, Cooper patiently advised Murphy that if she wanted to explain those unknown things through science, she would have to record more data, Then we can simulate the model and find out the law.

In the second half of the story, the audience knows that Cooper is actually the ghost in Murphy's room.

When Cooper lost himself in the tunnel of time and space, he finally appeared in a five dimensional space-time. He could see Murphy's room - the same scene of different time lines. He could see the past, the present and the future. So Cooper tried to have a dialogue with Murphy in his childhood through the tunnel of time, leaving a clue for Murphy, I hope Murphy can bring himself home again.

As an adult, Murphy finally unscrambles the code that his father left in the room through the time tunnel, and works out a way to save the earth, becoming a hero to save all human beings, and finally guiding his father back home.

In other words, Cooper's exposure to the five dimensional space-time is crucial to the core information of the whole film, and it is also the most difficult scene for the whole film to perform.

For this scene, Christopher built the whole hypercube!

In general, the world that people know is four-dimensional space, that is, three spatial dimensions plus one temporal dimension, while five dimensional space-time has four spatial dimensions, which is also called hypercube. For most people, it's a very difficult concept to understand, and it's even more difficult to present it on the big screen.

The task of the double negative company is to present the hypercube with visual effects. From the perspective of artistic creation, they can express the whole concept in a more abstract way; But Christopher is a director who constantly challenges the visual effect limit, and they finally decide to complete the production according to the exact shape of the hypercube.

Paul Franklin, director of visual effects at double negative, studied with astrophysicist Kip Thorne for nearly six months. He even got Kip Thorne's notebook as a treasure to ensure that his production team can create images that conform to the laws according to real physical formulas.

So is hypercube.

At present, human beings still can't understand the concept of four spatial dimensions, so after negotiation, Christopher and Kip arranged for Cooper to fall into one side of the hypercube, and then experience the hypercube from Cooper's perspective, so that the audience can feel the power of time and space in an easy way——

Because all the faces of the cube are two-dimensional, the face of the hypercube is three-dimensional. Nolan designed Cooper to fall into the "three-dimensional face" of the hypercube, which made Cooper not vanish.

At the same time, Murphy's room is located on another three-dimensional surface of the hypercube. Because of the existence of five dimensional space-time, it seems that there is only one bookshelf between Cooper and Murphy. The distance between the two people seems to be within reach, but in fact, the whole river of time and space is separated.

According to Albert Einstein's theory of relativity, it is impossible to go back to the past, even in high-dimensional space-time. But the movie sets that gravitational waves can travel through time and affect the past, which also means that if Cooper wants to change the past, he must be able to see the whole timeline, from the past to the future.

Time in the five dimensional space-time is an entity, just like a line, in which you can see every moment from beginning to end on the whole line; But if you try to change what happened in the past, you can only use gravitational waves to send out hints and flap your wings like a butterfly effect.

For this reason, Paul Franklin led the entire visual effects team to think about what the hypercube should look like, especially how to show the linear time existing in the entity, and how to further use the object as the medium to show every moment above the time line. He must find a perfect solution, not to let the picture disorderly, It must also ensure that the audience can observe the changes in Murphy's room at different times above the timeline through Cooper's perspective.

It was almost an impossible task, but the double negative company did.

They reduced the six images of Murphy's room, and let each image emit two vertical lines, which are called "time lines". Whenever the time lines intersect, an image of the room will be produced, just like a quadrant. The intersection of the vertical axis and the horizontal axis can form an intersection.

Therefore, in the whole five-dimensional space-time, we can see countless lines, which constantly meet to form images of countless rooms. These images are placed on different vertical and horizontal axes. According to the quadrant coordinates, we can accurately read the specific time points. Cooper only needs to float along the time line in the vertical or horizontal direction, and then he can see the past or future pictures of Murphy's room.

Such a picture, for any audience, is to need time to understand and digest the content, for the actor is no exception. If actors don't even know what's going on, how can they express their emotions accurately? Green screen can do it, but it can't help actors feel the real "time travel".

Then, the hypercube in front of you appears.

The space in the center is the three-dimensional surface, where Cooper is; The other spaces are all pictures of Murphy's room in different time coordinates.

Now there are only five rooms, but in the later stage, these rooms will be expanded to countless, showing all the coordinate points of the whole timeline.

The projector will also be used for actual shooting in the studio. The double negation company will project the images generated by time changes onto the surrounding curtain walls. Not only the actors, but also the whole shooting team can have an intuitive understanding of the time axis inside the hypercube——

For example, the space above may be when Murphy was five, the space on the right may be when Murphy was 65, and the space below may be when Murphy was 30. and so on.

In this way, the whole five dimensional space-time is presented in front of the public, and then the photography team and lighting team can understand how to choose all the shooting tracks, pictures and angles.

Of course, in the production behind the scenes, digital special effects must be added to every frame of the whole play, which is beyond imagination.

From the side, we can see Christopher's insistence: the shooting method of combining real scene and special effects can not only affect the performance of the actors, but also have an incalculable impact on the whole shooting team.

When shooting inception, Christopher built the whole corridor and installed it on a huge rotating machine, so that Joseph Gordon Levitt could shoot the weightless fighting in the corridor; Now Christopher has built the whole five dimensional space-time, so that Langley can complete a "journey of space-time" on the film screen.

Timothy couldn't help exclaiming, "so... All the models and props in the center are for that scene?"

It's just for a play, but it concentrates the wisdom of hundreds of people. The consumption of human and material resources is absolutely not small.

Before today, Christopher had discussed the concept of five dimensional space-time with Langley. For this reason, Langley also learned from Matthew Dunlop, and had a basic understanding of many of the theories. Now he finally saw the entity. After shock and surprise, another question came to mind.

"What about the lights?"

Langley's inquiry made Christopher cast a puzzled sight - for the lighting, Christopher will make adjustments according to the actual situation, so what's the problem? Langley can only go on to explain.

"I mean weightlessness. When Cooper is in five dimensions, he is weightless, right? So he was able to float up and down and read the information of different time coordinates. But if only rely on Weiya, then how to show weightlessness? Not only does the body not look light, but it also looks heavy. "

When the actor is in the state of weia, his limbs are off the ground, so it is difficult to control his body, which makes the influence of gravity further amplified.

In traditional oriental martial arts movies, the effect of flying over the eaves and walls depends on human force to pull Weiya. It's a super difficult technical work, not that the teacher Fu can't achieve such an effect; In the five dimensional space-time, Wyatt is relatively static. Langley is hanging in the air. Wyatt does not have much space to pull and move. Even if there is space, what Christopher needs is not to fly away, but to move in the quadrant of space.

This also means that the actor's action is bound to become clumsy, and the lighting effect will become particularly important.

After shooting "gravity", lanli had a preliminary understanding of the creation of weightlessness effect. Now the first idea in his mind is lighting.

Christopher opened his mouth and was ready to answer. He thought he already had a draft, but when the words came to his mouth, he could not help but stop, showing his thinking.

Christopher just stood there and thought for a moment, then turned around and left... Straight away.

Lan Li and others stayed in the same place, blinked their eyes, could not react, looked at each other, Timothy carefully asked, "is the director angry?"

"Poof," all three of them laughed.

Christopher, of course, wasn't pissed off, but went to look for the lighting group and the visual effects group - a very, very serious problem.

Generally speaking, the Weiya problem is entrusted to the martial arts special effects group. However, since there are no martial arts scenes in "star crossing", naturally there is no martial arts special effects group. Now the Weiya problem is completely ignored. If lanli didn't realize it, they would have to wait until they found the problem after shooting, and then adjust it slowly, which would be more troublesome.
