Chapter 163 - Shock and awe (2)

Nick grabbed bellania and jumped above the falling carriage before quickly landing on its upturned side so fast that he looked like little more than a blur to the bystanders. the carriage skidded for a few more feet before stopping but everyone nearby were looking at nick with amazement evident on their faces. bellania blinked not understanding what she just experienced as she saw a carriage falling towards her and the next thing she knows she's in nicks arms on top of the overturned carriage. nick noticed the confusion on bellanias face and explained roughly "that carriage was an assassination attempt." he said with a cold look in his eyes. bellania was stunned "how do you know?!" she asked in disbelief. still holding bellania nick jumped down from the carriage before releasing her and walking over to the exposed underside of the carriage. looking carefully at the entire bottom nick noticed another mechanism on the opposite side from the wheel that came off and pointed it out "that is the reason I'm sure this was no accident." he said seriously. everyone exclaimed in shock as nick pointed out the assassination attempt quickly and indisputably.

Bellania was also amazed that nick could find out the truth so fast "but how did you know that mechanism was there?" she asked confused. nick knew he couldn't say the real reason son he improvised "I've seen carriages collapse before when i was on my way to the capital and there is always one thing they all have in common , warning signs." he said seriously before continuing "when a wheel on a carriage is lose or damaged that wheel will either make odd sounds or will wobble in a noticeable manner , but this carriage did neither as all the wheels worked fine until exactly the moment it reached us and i refuse to believe that's a coincidence." he said honestly. everyone who heard nicks explanation had to admit what he said made sense but one thing didn't make sense and one person in the crowd spoke up about it. "but how did you react and jump on top of the carriage with that young lady?" they asked confused. nick made up an excuse "i trained against nature deep in the forest to the southeast of here so i have extremely honed reflexes as for jumping the carriage that was also because my training let me gain the strength of a bear and the speed of a snake making my girlfriend here weigh practically nothing to me." he lied with a straight face.

The crowd seemed to buy it since they couldn't think of any other reason to explain how nick could perform in the way he did. there was a few people mixed in the crowd who had ugly expressions when they heard nicks explanation since if it was actually true nick was their groups worse nightmare. the reason was simply that like all assassins surprise attacks were their bread and butter and the advantage to surprise attacks was that you couldn't react to them but for nick that wasn't true making their one advantage diminish to the point of being negligible. now you may be wondering about poisons but the fact of the matter is that if you can't get the poison into the body they are basically useless not to mention if nick truly trained in the woods he would notice poisons from a mile away.
