Chapter 95 - 95 He Confessed? That Was Fast!

95 He Confessed? That Was Fast!

After getting into the horse carriage, Zhao Chuchu recalled that she had not yet sold the Sky Heart Herb.

However, the few hundred silver she had was sufficient to cover her expenses for some time.

Niu An was extra diligent after receiving ten taels of silver from Zhao Chuchu for fear that his work might not be up to par, putting the payment she gave him to waste.

Zhao Chuchu could not help but let out a chuckle after witnessing that. Niu An was nothing like Niu Tongsheng as a person; the former was a down-to-earth and earnest man.

Nothing happened during the journey back home, and she reached Lengshui Village before sunset.

“You’re finally back.” Niu Tongsheng, who waited at the village entrance, let out a sigh of relief. “I thought something must have befallen you and was about to enter the city to look for you with the others.”

“I’m fine, Father. However, Chuchu came across a woman who had suffered difficult labor earlier. That’s why we came back late,” Niu An explained.

Zhao Chuchu jumped down from the carriage. “You have me here. I won’t let anything happen to Uncle. So don’t worry, Chief.”

“I wasn’t worried about him, but you all. Zhao Xing’s family came back this morning. I also heard that he confessed his guilt. Tentatively, he will be charged with the death penalty. That’s why I’m afraid they will take revenge on you.”

“He confessed? That was fast!”

“Yeah. According to what I heard from the local authorities, it scared the living daylights out of Zhao Xing when the victim pointed at him. He yelled and begged her not to get near him. Then he confessed everything. The man allegedly robbed and committed murder. He almost took the young woman’s life, but she was lucky enough to be rescued by someone.”

“Zhao Xing got what he deserved. It has nothing to do with me. If they were to pick on me, I would not let them off the hook.”

“Okay. It’s all good then. Let’s go home. It’s getting dark.”

After speaking, Niu Tongsheng went forward to help Xie Heng down from the carriage. Since Xie Jun was sleeping, he had Niu An carry the former and drive the carriage to the Xie clan. Then, he helped unload all the things.

Zhao Chuchu took a bag of pastries and handed it to Niu Tongsheng. “Chief, let the children have them.”

“Nah, don’t bother yourself with this. Why did you buy them? You need to spend a lot of money elsewhere,” Niu Tongsheng rejected.

He was firm in his stance and would not do anything that would bother her.

Misfortune would befall those who made an enemy of Zhao Chuchu!

The Zhao clan was the best example.

“Take it. Besides your family, I’ve bought for those who took good care of us before.” Zhao Chuchu shoved the bag into his hands. “Since we were rushed today, I don’t think we can invite Chief and Uncle Niu for dinner.”

“Don’t mind us. Go ahead with whatever you need to do,” Niu Tongsheng uttered. “Well, then. I shall gladly accept the gift. Thanks.”

Zhao Chuchu played a smile on her face and sent the father and son off.

Just then, Xie Jun woke up from his nap and rubbed his eyes. “Sister-in-law, are we home for dinner already?”

Staring at his dazed look, Zhao Chuchu couldn’t help but chuckle. “Not yet. We just got back home. Take a short nap first if you’re tired. I’ll call you when dinner is ready.”

Xie Jun shook his head. “I’m not going to sleep anymore. I will help start the fire since you’re cooking.”

“Got it!” Zhao Chuchu bought a roasted duck during her journey back home. So, she only had to cook rice.

Xie Jun immediately headed toward the kitchen to start the fire without waiting for her order.

Xie Heng went silent for a while and then said, “I’ll help too.”

Zhao Chuchu was speechless upon hearing that.

Was he afraid that she might end up cooking charred rice?

She murmured, “Although I can’t prepare dishes, I’m still able to cook rice properly.”

“I know. It’s getting cold. Sitting before the stove feels warm and comfy.” Xie Heng raised the corner of his mouth.

Zhao Chuchu thought to herself, “As if I’d believe your words! You cheeky young lad!”
