Chapter 238: Al~right!

"On my mark"

A man in a combat uniform shouted with a raised arm, and the two piles of soldiers on both of his sides nocked their arrows with a small fire burning on the tip of their arrows while pulling back the bowstrings.

"Fire!"

Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!

And the soldiers released their arrows as it flew towards the horde of zombies a couple of hundred meters away from them on the wide street of a large town.

Twak! Twak! Twak!

Not a lot of zombies fell, as those that were just struck on their bodies just kept moving forward, but those loosely tied two finger sized bottles on the arrows fell on the ground, cracked and splashed their contents on the road, and those zombies stepped on those slimy looking liquid.

"Nock!"

"Fire!"

Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!

And the same scene happened again and again as they continuously shot arrows with small glass bottles attached to the arrows towards the horde of zombies.

Then the man leading the soldiers suddenly smiled in satisfaction.

"Change!"

When he yelled that, the soldiers slowly dropped their bows on the ground beside them and pulled their old rifles strapped on their back to the front, lock and loaded.

Most of them were using M1 Carbines and the rest were armed with Tommy guns.

But they weren't the only armed personnel there, there were also two Humvees behind them. Which were two of the three Humvees that Leo had purchased from Gideon before.

The soldier behind the mounted machine guns quickly maneuvered their weapons to the front and pointed it towards the incoming horde!

"Fire!"

Pratatata!

A rain of gunfire quickly rained upon the zombie horde, as the bullets punctured through their soft bodies as they fell on the ground, never to get up again.

While some of the soldiers purposely shot towards the ground which ignited a small fire that slowly became large as the flammable oil that was contained inside those small glass bottles earlier had burst into flames, enveloping the area into a hellfire that burned everything in its path!

And then the middle aged man suddenly raised a clenched fist, which made the armed soldiers around him to slowly stop shooting.

"Retreat!"

And like a receding tide, the armed forces quickly packed up and left their post as they orderly made their way inside the military trucks parked on the side of the road and left the scene.

This medium sized town is currently one of the places that Leo's forces are currently trying to clean up, but the reason behind that they are willing to use up this much manpower and resources is that the town has two large food banks which were left mostly untouched according to their intel that they had received.

But the problem is that the town had already become like ground zero with how many zombies had congregated into the town from neighboring places, where they had then formed a horde of zombies.

Luckily for Leo and his men, there are no zombies among them that had mutated into a control type zombie yet or it would have long marched towards their nearest base in the area and clashed with the forces there.

So just like every routine on a daily basis, the soldiers of Earth Federation would come and mow down a large number of these man-eating creatures before retreating, like how guerillas would do in a mountain warfare.

And unknowingly, this seemingly useless objective of theirs is actually very crucial to their current plan because they had already managed to pull away most of the zombie horde from the town, leaving only a couple of hundreds or thousands of zombies remaining on the opposite side of the town.

Because on that side, there is another group of thirty soldiers and at least fifty battle hardened civilians armed with various cold weapons seated inside among the five military trucks, followed by two six wheeler cargo trucks, and a Humvee as the vanguard and a Foxhound as a rearguard for the convoy.

And this armed group are hurriedly making their way deep inside the town and towards the direction of one of the food banks.

Along the way, they met a lot of small obstacles from the remaining zombies in the town, and at the same time, they also managed to rescue a family of five from one of the barricaded houses that they had passed by.

"Are you guys good?" one of the soldiers asked the family of five that they had managed to rescue earlier.

"Y-yes, thank you for stopping and saving us" said the man of the family, his face and voice filled with gratitude.

The soldier chuckled, "Don't be grateful yet. After all, we're heading deep inside the town, and good thing, that you are locals here. You guys must know where the food banks are located, right?"

The man and his family were nervous at first, but when the husband heard the words food bank, his eyes quickly lit up in excitement.

"I-I know!" said the man excitedly, then his eyes glanced at the familiar road and continued, "and it seems you guys are heading towards the direction of the food bank where I worked at before all this sh*t went down"

The soldier with a Captain's patch, and who was talking to the man since earlier stared at him for a second, then at his men who was also looking at him in surprised as they didn't expect that one of the people they had just rescued was once a worker in the food tank that they're headed to.

The captain then placed his attention back to the man and said, "What's your name?"

"Fred..sir"

"Al~right!"

When he saw those wide grins on their faces, Fred suddenly had a bad feeling washing over him.

And his premonition did come true, as he was "forced" to spit out all information related to his former work, especially places where they can hide the vehicles away from the prying eyes of the others and shortcuts for easier escape routes out of the town.

After all, no one among the soldiers is familiar with the town except for the family before them.

"Don't worry, you and your family would at least have an easier entry to our survivor base when we vouch for your contributions during this mission"

The captain laughed and gave Fred a powerful pat on his shoulders, before turning his attention towards his men and quickly contacted the soldiers in the Humvee to make a stop somewhere safe for an urgent meeting for a change of plans as he deemed that the information he got would lessen the danger they would face when they arrived at their destination.

Fred and his wife shared a look, and the latter gave him a thumbs up as she also wasn't expecting this turn of events as she had been really worried of what would happen to them next.

After all, she's not that dumb to think that they are rescuing them out of goodwill, because she knows that there's no such thing as a free meal in this world, much less now that they are living in apocalyptic times!

'I didn't expect that my former job would actually come in handy in ensuring our survival one day'

Fred breathed a sigh of relief as he felt that the burden on his shoulders had at least lessened.
