At Matthew’s house.

Shannon sat by the window in a daze.

In the hospital, after they ate together, Shannon didn’t want to remain in the hospital. However, Matthew did not allow her to leave alone.

Since she was penniless, she had no choice but to follow Matthew back and stay at his home temporarily.

“Shannon, I want to hire a nanny for you. With your current health, it’s inconvenient for a man like me to take care of you. Wait for me at home. I’ll be back soon,” Matthew said as he walked over to her.

Shannon immediately turned around, wanting to reject him. She wanted to stand up, but she had just undergone surgery yesterday, so she fell to the ground weakly as she did so.

Matthew hurriedly went forward to help Shannon up. His heart ached even more when he saw her in this state.

“There’s no need for that. I can look after myself. I’m already very thankful that you’ve taken me in. I can also cook. Go ahead and do what you need to, and don’t worry too much about me.” Shannon refused Matthew’s offer to hire a nanny for her.

She didn’t want to trouble Matthew anymore. They were only fellow schoolmates, and she was already feeling very guilty for troubling him.

“Shannon, your current…”

“Matthew, I don’t like having someone watching over me all the time. I really am able to look after myself. Don’t worry, I won’t seek death.” Shannon was insistent on this.

In the end, Matthew had no choice but to give up and follow her wishes.

Shannon returned to the bedroom Matthew had prepared for her. Lying on the soft bed, her mind was filled with memories of her time with Max.

He had already been engraved in her heart. Even though she was heartbroken, she still couldn’t forget him.

Every morning, Matthew would go to work after buying breakfast for Shannon. At night, he would accompany her for dinner.

Even so, Shannon continued to lose weight day by day, and her face remained pale as ever.

Time flew by, and Shannon’s body soon recovered.

She wanted to leave Matthew’s house, but he didn’t give her a chance to bring this up for a few days.

“Matthew, I’ve thought about it. I’m almost fully recovered. I think…”

Before Shannon could finish her sentence, Matthew’s phone suddenly rang.

He picked up the phone and rushed out, so Shannon could only remain at his house.

He had taken care of her for so long, she couldn’t leave without saying goodbye.

Matthew knew that Shannon wanted to leave, but her current situation worried him. He did not want her to face everything alone.

“To the Bay Hotel,” he instructed the driver.

He had forgotten about an important engagement tonight. He was rushing over, but he was already late.

He quickly put on a tie in the car, found the invitation card, and rushed to the hotel.

“Welcome, Mr. Wenley. Come on in, the party is about to start.” The people outside the banquet hall were very respectful to Matthew.

Matthew smiled and walked inside. He found a corner and took a sip of his wine.

“Do you know? I heard that President Wenley is bringing a female companion today. I wonder which family’s daughter is so lucky!”

“Sigh, no matter what, President Wenley doesn’t have a woman. He’s from a wealthy family, so he’s way out of our league!”

“It’s fine, it’s fine. It doesn’t matter whether he’s in our league. At least we can have a feast for our eyes today…”

The woman beside Matthew suddenly started talking softly, and he heard every single word she uttered.

He took a sip of wine and lowered his head in deep thought. In truth, Max was considered his uncle even though he was actually his second cousin, and his father was Max’s eldest cousin.

His uncle was indeed married, but no one had seen what this aunt of his looked like. No one in the Wenley family talked about her. Was he going to see her today?

Because of the whispers around him, Matthew was suddenly looking forward to this originally boring cocktail party. He wanted to see what kind of woman could catch Max’s eye.

“They’re here…”

Matthew looked towards the entrance.

Max was dressed in a tailored suit that complemented his extraordinary aura. His extremely smooth features and handsome face could be said to be perfect.

The woman beside him looked radiant. Her thick hair fell casually over her shoulders, and she was wearing a silver, fitted dress. The luxurious black heels on her feet accentuated her figure and the slit at the front of her dress ended at her thigh, revealing the fair skin within. She was sexy but elegant.

The hall instantly fell silent as all eyes fell upon the couple walking in slowly.

The corners of Matthew’s lips curled up slightly when he saw the two of them. This woman was indeed worthy of Uncle Max. However, there was something strange about her.

Shannon’s figure suddenly appeared in his mind. If she wore this set of clothes, she would definitely be stunning. However, she would certainly be unwilling to come to such a place.

“It’s been a long time, Uncle Max. You are looking more handsome now.” Matthew approached Max with a wine glass in hand.

Max nodded stiffly. Matthew was used to this uncle of his being always cold and did not mind; he kept the faint smile on his face.

“Uncle? Max, you’re so young. I didn’t expect you to have such an old nephew.” Janice held Max’s arm affectionately and looked at him with a smile.

Matthew and Janice looked at each other. This woman didn’t feel alive. Rather, she looked like an exquisite piece of art.

“You must be my aunt? I’ve always heard that Uncle Max couldn’t bear to bring his wife out. From the looks of it, those rumours must be fake.” Matthew joked, thinking that this was Max’s wife.

No one knew that Max was divorced, so he was also unaware of it.

The smile on Janice’s face stiffened slightly when she heard this. Her grip on Max’s arm tightened unconsciously as she looked at him with her beautiful eyes.

She couldn’t decipher from his expression what he was thinking, or what he would say next.

“I’m already divorced. This is Janice, my date.” Max introduced her to Matthew in a frosty tone.

Janice was stunned. He had introduced her as his date, not his lover or girlfriend, just a date.

She thought that Max always belonged to her. But this time, something seemed different.

“Are you feeling unwell? I’ll get the chauffeur to send you back.” Max picked up the wine glass and passed it to Janice, but she was still caught up in her thoughts and didn’t take the glass from him.

Max’s voice brought her back to her senses immediately. Her usual smile appeared on her face again. Damn it, she actually lost her composure just now.

“I’m fine, just feeling a little cold,” Janice said in an impeccably gentle tone.

Max took off his suit jacket and gently put it on her.

Janice had a blissful smile on her face. No matter what, he was willing to bring her out and had treated her so well. She was sure that the title of Mrs. Wenley would be hers sooner or later..
