Chapter 6 - In the End, She Still Lost

Shannon looked at Max in disbelief. Was this the same man whom she spent three years of married life with?

How could he be so heartless? Even if he had no feelings for her, the baby was still his!

“I promise I will never let this child bother you. Please let me off.” Shannon’s voice was weak as she raised her teary eyes, hoping that he would change his mind.

Janice looked at Max. Suddenly, she felt that his gaze seemed to have softened.

She quickly leaned closer to Max and hooked her arm over his intimately.

“Shannon, Max and you have already divorced. Thus, you’re not in a position to conceive a child for the Wenleys. You can say that you won’t bother him now, but can you guarantee that this will be the case even in the future? You must know that once this baby is born, he’ll surely have a share of the Wenley Corporation’s assets. Max, don’t you agree?”

Max didn’t speak, but he didn’t refute Janice’s words as well.

Shannon’s eyes stung painfully at the scene unfolding before her. She felt as though a gust of cold wind had been poured into the cracks of her bones, hurting her so badly that she could barely breathe.

“Max, I, I can draft a contract now, or you can bring your lawyer here. I’ll make sure that this baby will never have any relationship with the Wenleys.” Shannon begged Max in a weak voice.

Max stood there coldly, and his icy gaze was dark and unfathomable. No one could guess what he was thinking at this moment.

Janice stared at Max with her sultry eyes, hoping that he would at least react to her words, and definitely reject his ex-wife’s request.

However, all she felt was him lightly clenching his fists. She didn’t say anything, but turned to look at her friend, Hannah.

Pa!

Hannah stepped forward and gave Shannon a resounding slap. The slap caused Shannon to fall back onto the ground, and blood immediately seeped out from the corner of her mouth.

Shannon felt dizzy, and a sweet, metallic taste of blood filled her mouth.

“Who do you think you are? Do you think you can just summon President Wenley’s lawyer at a whim? You can say that you won’t allow this baby anywhere near the Wenleys, but who knows what will happen when the kid grows up?” Hannah lashed out at Shannon in an aggressive tone.

Shannon looked up in a daze, her hands supporting her waist with difficulty.

“I swear that I will keep to my word! I will never go…”

Pa! Before Shannon could finish her sentence, she was slapped again.

Janice looked at the scene in front of her and felt a little nervous. She wanted to test Max, to see if he still cared about Shannon. However, she was suddenly worried that Max would change his mind.

“President Wenley, I’m not doing this intentionally. Think about it, which divorced woman would be willing to bear this burden? How would she get married in the future? Moreover, you wanted to give her so much money but she still rejected it. It’s clear that she’s just using this baby to obtain the Wenleys’ assets.” Hannah immediately justified her actions to Max.

When Max heard Hannah’s words, he looked once again at Shannon coldly. He didn’t say a word, but he had already made up his mind not to have this baby.

“This is twenty million dollars. Abort the baby.” Max took out a cheque from his pocket and threw it at Shannon’s face.

That piece of paper was like a sharp blade that pierced her heart. Her heart was aching so badly that her consciousness was starting to blur as well.

“Shannon, Max is doing this for your own good. Hurry up and get rid of this baby, then take the money and do whatever you want with it.” Janice was elated, and she quickly stepped forward to wipe Shannon’s tears, pretending to be helpful.

Shannon pushed Janice’s hand away and struggled to pick up the cheque. She used the last bit of her energy, and tore it in shreds.

“Shannon, don’t overstep your boundaries. Max has already done his best for you.” Janice didn’t expect the seemingly submissive Shannon to suddenly become so determined.

A trace of frustration flashed across Max’s chilly eyes. Why was she suddenly so disobedient?

“You don’t have to take the money, but you’ll still have to go for the abortion. I’ll give you one day to do it. Don’t let me see you with a protruding belly. Otherwise, you know what the consequences will be.” Max gave his ultimatum, then turned to leave the shabby house.

Janice immediately followed him, but she made a hand signal behind her back.

Hannah immediately understood. In order to secure her good friend’s future, she had to step in to help.

“Shannon, look, what’s wrong with taking the money? Why are you so stubborn? Hmm?” Hannah gripped Shannon’s chin, a sneer on her face.

Shannon wanted to struggle, but she didn’t have an ounce of strength at all.

She hoped that they would let her off now. Then, she could escape this place and give birth to her baby safely.

“Ah!”

However, she didn’t expect Hannah to suddenly give her a heavy blow to her stomach with the bottle of water in her hand. She cried out in shock, but her voice was pitifully weak.

Hannah turned around and left with Janice and Max’s men, leaving Shannon alone in the room.

She lay on the ground in pain, and suddenly felt a sharp pang in her lower abdomen.

Shortly after, Shannon’s forehead was covered in sweat.

“Are you alright?” Mrs. Weiss had just returned when she felt that the house was in a mess. She panicked when she heard and felt Shannon writhing on the ground.

Shannon reached out her pale hand to grab Mrs. Weiss’ clothes, her heart filled with fear.

“Save me, save…” She used all her strength but that was all she could manage.

Mrs. Weiss was dumbstruck as she felt Shannon crumbling to the ground, feeling the fresh blood pooling under her.

“Please, call, call, call Matthew…” Shannon suddenly recalled a name of a friend who might be able to help her, so with all her might, she pulled out her phone and passed it to Mrs. Weiss.

With trembling hands, Mrs. Weiss felt the phone in her hands and turned it on. She called the person named “Matthew” using the voice button and explained the situation to him.

“Child, don’t worry. The ambulance will be here soon. You’ll be fine!” Mrs. Weiss hugged Shannon and comforted her.

Shannon gripped Mrs. Weiss’ clothes tightly, hoping that she could remain conscious, and that her baby could survive this.

However, regardless of how strong she was, after so many days of hiding, the scare she suffered after being discovered by Max, and the abuse that she had just suffered, she finally couldn’t take it anymore. Before the ambulance arrived, she had already fainted.

Matthew rushed to the hospital and waited anxiously outside the emergency room for close to four hours. In the end, all he received was an apology from the doctor. Shannon’s baby didn’t survive.

“Please arrange the best ward for her. I’ll handle the hospitalization procedures now,” Matthew said and then he ran downstairs.

He had always had a crush on Shannon. They hadn’t been in contact with each other for a few years, but he had never expected them to meet again under such circumstances. She had actually lost so much weight, the glow on her face had completely disappeared, and she had even lost her child.

After Matthew paid the fees, he went out to purchase some food for Shannon, and accompanied her in the ward the entire night..
