Kai brought the hysterical Ryu back to his room and gave him a flask of water to drink. He waited for him to calm down then asked him to explain the situation.

The two siblings had set off over a week ago to deliver the much-needed supplies to their village. They had used a carriage so the trip had only taken a day. Along the way, they encountered a few [Grade-1] beasts however, the [Grade-2] [Cee-Horn] was enough to scare them away.

The carriage would only take them part of the way there, so they still had to walk the rest of the way on foot. In hindsight, this would prove to be the least of their problems

They arrived ahead of schedule, only to find their village in the process of being raised to the ground by a group of Man-hunters.

The siblings hid and watched in pain as the villagers they grew up with were slain or captured.

Ryu stopped there as tears started rolling down his eyes. He collected himself then continued.

"Sister and I were too shocked by the situation so neither one of us could move from the hiding spot at first. We could only watch while everything was destroyed..."

"When the Man-hunters finally left with their captives, we ran into the village looking for survivors, but instead we found Jurgen sitting at the town square as if nothing had just happened..."

"I knew there was something fishy about that guy!" Kai unconsciously chimed.

Ryu looked down with a pained look in his eyes. He covered the scar over his eye with his hand and continued to speak.

"I don't know why, but Jurgen betrayed the village and is now helping the Man-hunters. We confronted him and asked why, but he just ignored us and told us that we should have never come back"

Kai heard the pain in Ryu's voice as he spoke. He remembered just how much the kid had talked about Jurgen like he was some kind of superhero. He must be feeling crushed right now.

"I see, it's quite unfortunate. But tell me what happened to Mina, and how did you get that scar?"

Ryu looked up at Kai with desperate eyes as he clenched his fists.

"Sister attacked Jurgen in a fit of rage. She was surprisingly able to fight him evenly which must be because of the gift that Master bestowed onto her..."

"Oho, she fought him evenly you say?" Kai asked with a smile.

He had always been curious about Mina. He knew that she had a [Grade-3] physique called the [Divine Yin Body]. It had destroyed her spiritual root at birth and was essentially a death sentence, but now that he had given her an alternative way to cultivate Qi without a spiritual root, was it finally showing its true potential?.

Ryu continued when he saw Kai hadn't raised any questions on that. This further convinced him of his theory that everything was somehow part of Kai's master plan.

"Their fight was short but intense and sister had the upper hand for a while. Jurgen was also surprised, so when he saw that couldn't win, he decided to aim for me...He captured me and threatened to kill me if my sister did not surrender..."

Ryu was angry as the memory of Jurgen's blade replayed in his mind. He even started to feel a subtle pain.

"How did you get away from him?. I doubt he just let you go"

"I bit his hand! forcing him to let me go. Sister capitalized on that moment and grabbed him, but it was all too late. We heard the Man-hunters returning, probably drawn back by all the commotion"

"Sister told me to run back into the wilds and wait for her, but I waited all night and she still didn't come. The next morning I went back found nothing except for a few tracks. That's when I decided to come to find you for help. It took me 3 days traveling day and night to get back..."

Kai nodded his head in understanding. Ryu was good at tracking, so it made sense that he was able to find his way back to the city while avoiding the beast's territories.

"So do you think they took her?", Kai asked.

"I'm sure they took her, sister would have come and found me if they hadn't. Their tracks were well hidden, but I'm sure about the general direction they left in was south"

"South?..."

Kai wondered if this was a coincidence since he was also planning on going south soon.

"I was planning on heading south anyway. We can go look for her tomorrow then".

"Thank you, Master!" Ryu said with sincerity. He didn't believe for a second that Kai was already planning on going south. He believed with all his heart that Kai was just saying that so they wouldn't feel burdened by his help. Ryu again felt his heart being warmed up by Kai's actions. He once again pledged to pay him back for all his generosity.

"Have something to eat and get some rest. Tomorrow morning we head out". kai threw a steamed bun at him as he spoke.

Kai planned on bringing him along for his tracking skills so he needed him in his best condition. His map wouldn't be useful once they reached the borders between the Twin-Lions sect and the Roaring Sands Sect. He needed someone good at tracking to guide him in the right direction and away from danger.

"Once you regain some strength, I'll turn you into an internal cultivator as I did for your sister. I just hope you haven't forgotten my conditions..."

"Yes, I have not forgotten! Thank you, Master!"

Ryu was teary-eyed. He thought Kai would have already forgotten or changed his mind by now.

Kai on the other hand was curious more curious about the [Sub-Core]. When he had created Mina's [Sub-Core], he was unfamiliar with the process and had a relatively low cultivation base, but now he understood it better and felt he could make a better product.

Ryu had a few steamed buns from Kai's rations then quickly fell asleep on the floor.

"Poor kid, he must have been exhausted". Kai didn't have much hope of Mina being alive so he was a little worried about Ryu. Kai shook his head helplessly. He couldn't control her situation, but he could control what he did about it.

Kai stood up and looked out the window.. He decided to ask Lei Hai about the man Hunter's in the morning.
