Chapter 54 - The Unsuspecting Enemy

Chapter 54: The Unsuspecting Enemy

Kyle Leonard shifted the revolver towards the operator and commanded, “Continue.”

With his cold gaze, the man instinctively knew Kyle Leonard would not hesitate to shoot. “Uh, it was a wizard registered in the Ministry of Magic! I saw with my own eyes a badge from the Magic Department hanging underneath the robe!”

“Magic department…”

“The order I received was to catch Eleonora Asil. Not murder! It doesn’t make sense for Yulem to assassinate her!”

“It doesn’t make sense for Yulem to assassinate her? Have you never approached her until you received the order?”

“That woman, she’s crazy! We wouldn’t dare touch her!”

“Hmm…” Kyle Leonard fell in deep thought as questions flooded his mind. Is the culprit behind the witch’s death in the Ministry of Magic?

Combining the information he had so far, Kyle Leonard deduced: upon discovering that Eleonora Asil had survived the attack, the culprit hired Yulem to capture her. But what was the need for Yulem when he had done it himself before? Kyle Leonard could think of only one reason: to capture something else, too.

The murder who assassinated Eleonora Asil knew that the current witch is not the same person as she used to be. And it wasn’t in his plan. Hence, he wants Yulem to capture Park Noah, who is wearing the body of Eleonora Asil.

“…This is fun.” Strangely, a faint smirk crept on the investigator’s lips.

At the same moment, the train was nearing the railroad switch; the rattle becoming louder and faster. Kyle Leonard took his gaze off the man and turned to the railroad, narrowing his eyes.

Target the goal by accurately calculating the angle, which will vary slightly from time to time depending on the direction of travel of the train, the distance the train moves in a second, and the distance traveled.

The operator, who noticed the investigator’s plan again, shook his uninjured arm wildly. “Stop it, you crazy bastard!”

But the ruckus became pointless as Kyle Leonard pulled the trigger.

Bang!

The bullet went off, missing the metal device that had been erected at the edge of the railroad by a narrow distance. However, what Kyle Leonard intended to aim was the small lever that allowed operators to manually change the direction of the railway, in case of an emergency.

The metal device tilted and crushed the lever on the edge of the railroad. As the lever was pressed down, the railroad began to move slowly. Soon, it will separate from the connected railways and interlock with the other rail.

The direction of the tracks, which had been steered to the left, changed to a straight line, and in a ghostly timing, the train sped at a terrifying speed as it turned completely.

Magic lost its control on the railroad. The operator’s eyes widened in shock and astonishment. The train, which had been malfunctioning since it departed from Lunazel, began to stop slowly.

“What, what, what’s this…” The operator stammered as he witnessed the investigator’s impulsive idea materialize into a success.

Despite the metal device being more than seventy meters, the investigator was still able to shoot it, consequently knocking the lever underneath. There was only one person in Laurent with unparalleled shooting skills that was capable of such tricks.

Shortly, the train came to a halt. Kyle Leonard returned his revolver into the holster in one swift motion and approached the operator. “You’d better not wake up this time.”

This time, he hit the man’s neck properly and with more force. Bam! The man fainted without any time to resist.

Kyle Leonard stuffed the operator’s mouth with foam before escaping through the smashed window. The funky glasses he wore hung askew on the bridge of his nose; its lens cracked due to his clash with the five assassins, interfering with his sight.

“I can’t use this anymore.” He took the glasses off and tried to throw it into the engine room. Come to think of it, these glasses were given by Noah.

“Tsk…” He folded the glasses and thrust it into the pocket of his uniform, clicking his tongue. I think I should change it in the city.

He approached the motionless train, left with one more task.

As soon as the train for Central Edman leaves the fabricated railway, the Yulem headquarters and employers will also report that the operation to capture Eleanora Asil failed.

On the other hand, the train bound to Battuanu has been confirmed safe, thus it would be alright for Park Noah to remain on board. The problem lies when she arrives at Battuanu.

Will she be fine alone?

Worry occured to the investigator, but soon he recalled that by her side was a dedicated dragon, and surrendered his troubles with a sigh. If the culprit’s purpose was to capture, not assassinate, then her body would not be found dead from a stranglehold.

Still, it was not enough for his concerns to completely disappear. Park Noah never appeared to be reliable to his eyes.

Your athletic skills are below average, your motivation is below average, your brain function and your sense of perception seem to be above average, but…

Suddenly, a vision of a pretty sloth that hadn’t moved more than a two-kilometer radius from her house in two years emerged in Kyle Leonard’s mind, causing him to be extremely confused. He shook his head and walked towards the train. It was only then that he felt exhaustion.

There was a commotion in all eight carriages. Perhaps the fear of the passengers that was silenced by a series of shots finally erupted.

“Sir! Is there a terrorist attack?”

“Why were there gunshots earlier?”

“Are we safe now? Will the train explode?”

The train’s radio and emergency contact to the National Railroad were all dead, so they had to wait for the succeeding train to follow three or four hours later.

Kyle Leonard calculated the time by changing the flashing green light from the railroad to red. I think the interval is four hours…

Fortunately, he did not have to wait for four hours and be responsible for more than 200 passengers as in a distance, the lights of a police car flashed. The magistrate sitting in the passenger seat shouted through the microphone.

“I received an emergency call from the train to Battuanu!”
