Chapter 83 - Their Marriage

"Renz, Selene… is it okay if I will ask you to get married next month? This is my last wish. I want to see my granddaughter walking down the aisle with her white dress."

Grandma Elysa's request made Eros freeze in his spot the moment he entered the ward. He darted his gaze back and forth between Selene and Renz, waiting for their reply.

It seemed that the two of them were also caught off guard by that request. He could see the stunned expressions on their faces.

Selene felt strange when she heard her grandmother's request. She wondered if that was the right thing to do even though Renz didn't have feelings for her yet.

Once they got married, there was no backing down now. But she was afraid that they would have a broken marriage if ever she would fail to win his heart.

Getting married to Renz was not an assurance that he would not fall for someone else, especially for Micaela. What if this would make things more complicated between them? A marriage without love.

Renz could still fall for Micaela. It would become worse if he would cheat on her during their married life. After that, he would ask her for a divorce. Would Selene be able to handle it?

Selene's mind was filled with uncertainties and fear as she was thinking of those negative things that might happen in her marriage life with Renz. She was pulled out of the deep thought when Renz spoke up, responding to Grandma Elysa's request.

"Yes, grandma. If that is what you want, Selene and I are willing to do that. We can move our wedding earlier. Besides, Selene is already graduating this year. She is also at the legal age to get married."

Then he turned to Selene, wrapping his arm around her shoulder. "Are you okay with this, Selene?"

Selene and Eros were both taken aback because of Renz's remarks. They didn't expect that he would agree instantly with Grandma Elysa's request.

But instead of feeling the joy, Selene was saddened by this. She knew that Renz was just doing this to honor the promises of the elders to each other about their arranged marriage.

Renz could only see her as his sister right now. No romantic feelings were involved at all. He was just doing this because of his responsibility.

Furthermore, Renz was not yet close to Micaela so he hadn't developed his feelings yet, that's why he was just fine with marrying Selene for now.

But the moment he crossed paths again with Micaela and fell for her then Renz would never agree to this marriage.

He might shamelessly ask Selene again to stop the marriage just like how he asked her to break off the engagement in Selene's previous life.

"Selene??" Renz nudged her shoulders as she was put in a trance once more.

Renz and Grandma Elysa were waiting for her answer. Feeling a little bit pressured with the way they were looking at her, Selene could only nod her head and smiled faintly at them.

Grandma Elysa's lips held a gentle smile and her eyes twinkled with joy. She felt relieved now because Renz and Selene agreed to get married soon.

She wanted to see them tying the knot before leaving Selene behind. She could feel that she didn't have much time left. Her body was becoming weaker day by day, her health slowly deteriorating.

Selene wondered why there were so many unexpected things happening in this new lifetime. Grandma Elysa didn't make such a request about this marriage before.

"Renz, Selene… I know that my request is so sudden. But I'm so grateful to both of you. You make me more at ease because of this. I wish you both happiness. Renz, please take good care of my granddaughter. Don't make her cry."

"Grandma, I already made a promise. I will take care of Selene," Renz reassured her.

Selene felt like crying again. It seemed that she was already leaving them messages as if she was saying goodbye to them.

"Grandma, please stop talking as if you are going anywhere and not coming back anymore. You have to take a rest to recover your strength. Sleep now, grandma. I will just be here, watching over you."

Selene didn't want to hear those goodbye messages from her grandmother. She was not yet ready for that.

Grandma Elysa could only look helplessly at her granddaughter. She could see the sadness in her brown eyes. She decided not to say another word that would make Selene sad.

She just nodded her head in agreement. With that, Selene and Renz helped Grandma Elysa to lie down comfortably with her sickbed.

Grandma Elysa closed her eyes and finally drifted off to sleep after a few minutes. Selene stayed with her grandmother's side, not leaving her.

"Renz, I know you are tired from your work. Go home for now and take a rest. Don't worry about me. Aunt Ling will accompany me here," Selene softly said to Renz.

"Are you sure? Just let me stay for a while. I will go home once Aunt Ling arrives," Renz insisted on staying with her.

He couldn't leave her alone. He knew that Selene needed someone by her side at this moment.

"Renz…"

Renz gazed at her with a tender look in his eyes. "Yes, Selene?"

"Thank you…"

"For what?" Renz asked her confusedly.

"For agreeing to grandma's request so that she would feel at ease. You know that she is always worrying about me. But I hope you don't feel pressured or forced because of that." Selene looked at him worriedly.

Renz just let out a soft chuckle before caressing Selene's face.

"Don't thank me for that. And don't think I only agreed because I was forced. We are going to get married anyway so there's nothing wrong if we will do it earlier as per Grandma Elysa's request."

Selene was at a loss for words the moment she heard those words from Renz. It was so hard to believe that Renz was saying this to her.

Her heart would jump with joy only if Renz was saying this because he loved her. Unfortunately, that was not the case here… at least for now.
